I need to go to Phoenix for cancer treatment.  This will be about a six weeks stay.  How do I look for apartments or condos for rent?  A hotel would be so expensive!  It would be idea if we could bring the cat.  I've never done anything like this before.  Thanks for your help!

Re: NWR - Phoenix travel help

  • Try VRBO's website.  It might be cheaper to rent someone's vacation property for all (or a big part) of it.  I like that site better than AirBNB.  I recommended it to a friend who needed to stay somewhere for a month between apartments and it worked out great for her.

P.S.  Sorry about the reason for your stay.  That sucks.

  • Thank you for the suggestions.  Most Knotties know that I have had cancer for a long time.  This is just a new treatment that is available from the Mayo clinic.  It involves daily radiation treatment over a six weeks period.

  • I wouldn't automatically rule out hotels.  The first thing I would do is reach out to the treatment center and find out if they have any hotels that they partner with.  I work for a pretty fancy hotel near a medical center and we offer rooms to patients at under $100 a night; I'm sure hotels that are cheaper to start with would have even better rates.  If the treatment center doesn't have any specific hotel partners, you can try calling hotels nearby to see if they have a discounted rate available for long term guests.  I would start with extended stay hotels; they are typically pretty affordable, they are likely to offer discounts for longer stays, they have more amenities that long-term guests would find useful, and they very often accept (small) pets.

Alternatively, you could try to find an AirBnB that offers discounts for monthly/weekly rental.  Or look into furnished executive housing with short term leases.

    Best of luck to you!
  • The Mayo has special rates at their on site hotel (Marriott). They also have the Mayo Village, which they let patients stay in that have long term treatments, like stem cell transplants.

The area around the clinic is a pricey area to live in, and this is peak season in Phoenix. So, it might be hard to find a rental for cheap. So, Def recommend going through the clinic social workers.

  • Thanks!  The alternative is going to Maryland and visiting with the kids, but six weeks is too long to impose on relatives.  I really don't want to do that to my daughter.  Besides, there is the cat.  He is just recovering from our being gone for two weeks on a Hawaii cruise.  Six weeks is way to long to leave him.  He is our big baby.

  • Good luck with everything! The new Mayo cancer center is awesome. I mean, I don't like having to go there (who would?), but I am very grateful and fortunate to have had them manage my care.

when are you looking to start your treatment? If for some reason our renters move out of our AZ home, I'll let you know!

  • Try VRBO or Air BnB. They may have more affordable long-term rental options. I'll keep you in my prayers during this treatment CMG!

  • Thank you, ladies.  I'm not sure whether the treatment will be practical or not, but we are going for a few days for more tests and evaluations.  It seems the cancer has spread a bit more than we had hoped.
I found the perfect place on VRBO, and we are in contact with the owner.  I never would have thought to try this site without your suggestions.  You ladies are wonderful!  Thank you so much!  I'll let you know after next week.
