Hey, y'all.  What's shakin'?

For those who didn't see my reply on the Tuesday post, full update there. TL;DR: Barbie called the correct diagnosis: trichotillomania

So I picked her up early from after school, ran her to the pedi, and then we went to the indy toy store to try to get some thinking putty to keep her hands busy.  No luck, but we did leave with some stuffies.  Popped into Justice (which kind of made me want to start pulling out my hair) and she found a pair of leggings, a dress for the Valentine dance, a necklace, and a big 80s-style hair bow.  Cold Stone, picked up DS, art class, takeout.

Work is just meetings, meetings, and more meetings.  We're on an Apr-March fiscal year (which I hate), so we're deep into budget planning for next year and it's taking up way too much of everyone's time lately.  Sigh.  The less said about that, the better.

Re: Wednesday

  • I'm cranky today. I didn't sleep well, H took my car last night and messed with the seats and left the gas tank on empty, and came in and tried to "help" while I was getting lunch stuff ready which really meant he was just in my way and making things take longer.

Wednesdays are my long days and I just don't have the patience for it today.
  • Also, really glad she doesn't have ringworm @Heffalump. Is trichotillomania pretty easy to treat?
  • @Heffalump Hooray for no ringworm! One of my cousins had trichotillomania when she was younger; she eventually outgrew it.

Today H & I meet the OB. I am leaving work early to drive home (H is working from home today), pick up H and drive back into the city to go to the appointment at the hospital. It's a lot of run-around considering my office is a 7-minute drive from the hospital, but this is a much better option than listening to H complain about the confusing layout of the neighborhood the hospital is in (a lot of hospitals and med schools packed together), and having to navigate the parking garage with his truck.

We had snow overnight, and it only amounted to an inch or two, so I had to drive into the office instead of "working" from home in my jammies like I had hoped.
  • Also, really glad she doesn't have ringworm @Heffalump. Is trichotillomania pretty easy to treat?

Apparently in younger kids, it is?  Especially if it's an unconscious habit, rather than some kind of coping mechanism.  Her pediatrician was optimistic that since she recently gave up the hair chewing, she has the ability to be mindful of her habits and correct them.  So that's something.  Also, she doesn't have bald spots on her scalp or anything, so it appears to be a mild case.  Here's hoping!
  • I'll find my 'fiddle toys' site later, if that might help.

I"m off momentarily to go donate platelets, because, eh, I"m unemployed, this is how I give back, since I've no cash.
  • @Heffalump I'm glad she doesn't have ringworm! I had it once in highschool and it was horrible. Plus it's suuuuper contagious. I'm sure she'll grow out of the trichotillomania. One of my friends growing up had it and I seem to remember her just stopping it one day.

    Morning, y'all.

Apparently I am in a bad mood again today. I realized that as soon as I woke up. I don't know what is up with me lately. My teammate is also in a horrible mood, so I guess it's good that I'm not squashing anybody's good spirits?

I started our taxes last night and then realized that we still don't have one of DH's W-2s. Ugh. There always has to be that one that waits til the very last second to send them out. So far, I'm not sure that we'll be getting enough back to pay for me to go back to school. I'm trying not to get bummed out over that until I am totally finished filing and see the final numbers. I'm hoping I'm wrong and we'll have some random deduction that boosts our refund.

  • @Heffalump, I'm glad Wooz doesn't have ringworm or any of the other (worse) conditions you were thinking of yesterday.  It's good to hear the pedi isn't concerned, it's a mild case, and something kids usually grow out of.

@mrsconn23, I love your wood painting!  So cute.  Do television stations typically approve/reject ads?  Or is this something special for Superbowl ads?  What are reasons stations will reject an ad?  I realize you may not know the answer to any of my questions, lol.  Your post sparked my curiosity.

My H and I went to a fancy dinner last night because I had a gift card.  It was awesome!  I had a trout dish covered in lump crab meat and shrimp, with a whipped béarnaise sauce.  Yum!  My H had a steak that he also really liked.

I'm FINALLY putting up my ad today for the 2-bedroom unit of the duplex we've been rehabbing.  Crossing my fingers for LOTS of interest/showing requests/applications from qualified, awesome potential tenants.  That renovation, unfortunately, took way longer than I initially expected.  I thought we'd have tenants already in and planted a month ago, at the longest.  Oh well.

It wasn't rejected for content.  It was rejected because the NFL actively guides players away from sponsorships from DH's company because they are in the supplement business and sell products that have 3 banned substances (out of the 162 (?) that the NFL bans).  The NFL approved the ad and then the NFLPA was all, "WTF?  You're going to give them ad space but the players can't partner/be sponsored by them?!"  So the NFL said, "Yeah, our bad.  Sorry.  No ad for you."
  • @Heffalump that's good news about it not being ringworm and the trichtillomania being more of an unconscious habit.

I have school today and I have to finish a paper. I stayed up until two this morning trying to get the main chunk done. It was supposed to be around 5 pages and so far it's ten. Oops. Honestly I'm not sure how it was supposed to be shorter and still meet rubric requirements.

Im making a decision to start working out and dieting seriously again today. Boo. But I'm not happy with what I look like. I just really wish diet/clean eating type food was as delicious as all the crap that got me here in the first place.

  • Came home yesterday to discover H has a head cold.  I guess its better than my stomach flu!  He didn't sleep well because he was congested and he in turn kept me up most of the night too.  I was thinking about leaving the room, but I was so comfy in the bed with my crazy big pregnancy pillow, I just laid there instead of leaving for a potential good night sleep.  So I'm now dragging today.

We were supposed to have a BFing class tonight, but I've moved it to a different night since H won't be up for it.  I'm also run down and thinking of staying up until 9:30 is no bueno today.  The other day H was asking why he even had to go, so I'm sure he is happy its been put off for now.  Once I explained that it can help me stick with it and he will be able to help me knowing what to do, he seemed ok with attending.  But I'm sure this is a class most FTDs dread!

Tonight will be low key and quiet now.  I think Olive is starting to realize Betsey isn't coming back and she is bummed out.  She's been keeping her ears back a lot more too, so I think she is worried.  We just keep reassuring her and giving her some extra attention.

In some happier news, the rug for the nursery came in!  H, even in his head cold, laid down the remaining majority of tile last night.  We just need to worry about the tiles around the toilet flange, which will be circular cuts.  But we are having a plumber come in (hopefully today) to lower the flange first, so we won't have to worry about leveling the toilet with shims since it will sit much higher with our new tile floor.  The plumber wanted to do that before we finished tiling.  Fingers crossed he can do it from the bathroom and not have to make holes in our first floor ceiling to do it!

  • So I've been working on this project for WEEKS now, and I just found out that a donor we had been counting on won't support the project any more. I'm pissed that I spent so much time working on it and the donor liaison didn't bother to check with the damn donor!?!

    I want to go home.
  • Heffa - Yay for no ringworm!

Sparklepants - The drive will be worth it when you get to either see your baby or hear the heartbeat!

    MrsConn - Love the sign!

TFB - The bad mood may be tied to your job :( I hope you are able to find something else soon!

S+S - The dinner sounds delicious!  Even if I wouldn't eat anything that rich right now!

K so 2 of the 3 employees in accounting just quit. Everybody here is freaking out. And of course my boss is using it to stir up drama between everybody instead of trying to ease our minds.

    Can I go home?

Sounds like we're both having bad days. Let's all go home.

Also, I let Wooz's teacher know what was up, and she just said she's going to put a piece of Velcro on the underside of Wooz's desk for her to fondle (she did not use that word).  She said it's a good distraction for a lot of her kids and gives them something to channel their energy into.  She was like "I did notice she stopped chewing her hair, but I never saw her pulling on her eyebrows."  So at least it hasn't taken over her life or anything.

But now I'm obsessed with thinking putty.  Since our local store was out, I went online and now I want allllllll of them.

@thefanciestbeckler, good luck with that place.  Here's hoping for something better soon.

That really sucks. And it really sucks that it seems your boss has a very unprofessional/inappropriate approach to leadership.

There is a stomach bug going around Boston - didn't you just come down with that? ;)

I think you should go home and stop for a cupcake & bottle of prosecco on your way home. You know, to get rid of that stomach bug. ;)
  • Thank you @Heffalump! I'm hoping something works out soon.

@charlotte989875 I agree, let's all go home. Your day sounds like it sucks too. I'm sorry :(

  • @charlotte989875, that super, duper sucks.  I'm sorry.

No, but maybe it's time to ask for a raise ;).

I feel like there's a story?  Otherwise, it seems odd that two people would quit on/around the same day.

  • Lol @sparklepants41! Yes, I definitely caught that stomach bug that's going around Boston.... And prosecco and a cupcake sounds like the perfect medicine for it :)

@short+sassy yeah it was a planned thing apparently. They work directly with our CFO, who is shady AF (who here isn't?). They'd had enough of her so they both quit. This makes 8 people in about 2 years time who have quit after working directly with her. But of course they won't get rid of her because she's friends with the owner. Good times lol

  • @Heffalump yay to no ringworm!  Re: unconscious habits.  My brother used to chew the collars off (literally, there would be massive holes in the fabric) his polo shirts up to about second grade (age 9).  It drove my parents absolutely nuts, and they eventually just put binder clips on his shirts to break him of the habit.  Still cracks me up to think about it.

    @thefanciestbeckler, @charlotte989875, mental health day?

I've been on my feet all morning.  They hurt.  I think I need new work boots.

I like my new dentist.  He's pretty awesome, as far as dentists go.  Well, except for the "you need to see an orthodontist (but only if you want to), but you really should" part.  Apparently, the palate expander I had from age 8-9 (god, what a bad year... glasses and orthodontia?) didn't fix the awful cross-bite I had as a kid... it just made it relatively less awful, and then resulted in a grotesque overbite (not my words).  Twenty years later, and I had no idea my jaw is so deformed.  I am wondering if I should tell my parents that all that money they paid to reshape my jaw was for naught.  Anyway, the dentist seemed flabbergasted when I said "Pass" on the referral.  I mean, I've lived 20 years with my mouth as horribly misaligned as it is, and I'm none the worse for wear.

Here I was just wishing my smile was a little whiter, and now I am incredibly aware of my smile and how ugly my dentist thinks it is...  At least I have no cavities.

  • bah, my iron has to be 12.5 to donate....
    I'm 12.4.
I swear I bulk up on iron-rich foods ahead of time, but, eh, just didn't work.

Buffy was in a mood yesterday...and decreed she wants to quit riding lessons.  I'm debating how much to push back on that--I'm OK w/ going to something else, but 'eh, something was hard, I want to quit" puts me in that awkward place of wanting to push her back.

  • Heff, tangle toys remain my favorite, but, this is on my shortlist of things to get for the kiddo, and might be right up her alley:

(I also like the marble in a cloth tube types, but I think that's probably not as helpful for your situation)
  • @AtomicBlonde I need braces again too.  It sucks.

@gbck - I always eat a mcdonalds cheeseburger 2 hours before; plus never go the week of or after your period.  Your iron is at it's lowest then.

I'm pretty high on the meh scale.  I'm not having an allergic reaction to my medicine - yay of that - but I'm feeling off and my right eye is blurry.  I'm pretty sure I didn't switch contacts this morning so I'm not sure what it is.  Plus, I'm going through my annual "what am I doing with my life" conundrum.  Its my tenth year with my company and I'm pretty sure I'll never be promoted from sales into sales management.  Add an election cycle to that and my bi-annual "I'm a sellout for leaving politics" guilt comes back and I'm researching law school like someone wants to have a 40 year first year law intern working for them.  I'll get over it, I always do, but I'd rather be getting over it in pajamas at home with the hubs, but I can't succumb!

@mrsconn23 your sign is so cute!

Sorry to hear that!  I was once told by a phlebotomist, when I was trying to donate blood and my iron was too low, that caffeine lowers iron levels.  Since then, I have avoided coffee or tea on the mornings I'm donating blood.  It's tough!  Tough!  But I do it for a good cause.

Fun facts about short+sassy.  I am a B- blood type, which is the second rarest.  Only 1.5%-2% of the population have this type.  But here is what is even crazier.  Of those with a B- blood type, less than 10% are Caucasian, though I am.  I actually think it was only 2-3%, but couldn't find the stat again.  I shared this info with my mom and sister when I first ran across, both of them are also B-, and joked that the Caucasian B- percentage would go down another 1/2 point if it wasn't for the three of us, lol.

  • @Heffalump  - I've watched a lot of "untold stories of the ER" and medical stuff fascinates me - plus, biomedical engineering degree.
Just based on what you've told us on Wooz, and her sensitivity, it's not a surprise (not in a bad way by any means - like i said, DK likely has a mild version). I think the velcro suggestion is a good one - sensory stimulation that will distract her from the pulling.

i need to go back and read the other posts, i've been in meetings a lot of today and just got 2 more projects added to my list - because i don't have enough other jobs to do. hopefully new boss can turn this into some big money or at least an awesome performance review score (which will get me a better bonus) and leader attention.

Those HipFits are so adorable!  I especially love the Union Jack dress--we're on a big UK kick now that we're doing more planning for the trip.  And Wooz has a thing for backpack charms.  (I just 1-Clicked that sucker, it will be here Friday.)

And the Tangle Toys!  I should have known you'd have things up your sleeve.  You know who needs one of those?  DS.  He is crazy for anything tactile, and we're making progress on strengthening his pencil grip, so this will be helpful there.  (Another 1-Click!)

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Thinking Putty is ordered.  I got the raspberry magnetic and the scarab, and I fully plan to play with them after the kids are in bed.  (Good for Wooz's fidgeting drive and DS's fine motor skills/muscles!)

Sending hugs and positive vibes to everyone having crap days!

I managed to get mostly caught up after two days away, despite server issues. My back is better but there's a long way to go. I still walk like a bear coming out of hibernation.

@mrsconn23, I really like that sign!

@Heffalump, I bought some Hypercolor thinking putty for FSD, and the report back is that she loves it!

@GBCK, something else to keep in mind is that vitamin C improves iron absorption. I try to drink lots of orange juice before donating blood.
