Re: Monday

  • @atomicblonde If H had left the chain link fence up, the wood fence would be all her responsibility, but since he took it down, the law considers it shared. We really don't have an option but to do something. I'm just waiting to hear back from an attorney on our options.
  • @kimmiinthemitten, are you trying to adopt from a rescue organizations or from a shelter?  I've found that rescues, especially the breed-specific organizations, are sorely particular about the homes their dogs go to, which I both understand and don't agree with.

I understand because they specialize in rehoming a certain breed and know the demands and needs (like young dobes generally should go to families with no small children who are able to give them the mental and physical stimulation they need), and want to make sure they don't get the dogs back for the same/similar reasons they were originally surrendered.

But I also disagree with them because that tends to disqualify a lot of extremely suitable candidates who would be able to give these dogs the homes they need, opening up space for more homeless or surrendered dogs to be rehomed.  For instance, most of the local doberman rescues require that the dog not be home alone for more than 4 hours during the day, which would automatically disqualify us, even with our experience with the breed and its demands, from consideration.

Also, from experience, even a dog who isn't prone to wandering is safer in a fully-fenced yard (did I ever mention the time Toothless took himself for a walk out from under DH's nose while I was away for work?  We had always thought Hiccup was the flight-risk...).  That doesn't mean you HAVE to have one to be a good dog owner, but I again understand and disagree with why fences are required/preferred.

  • Morning, all

All this fence talk reminds me I should get some quotes for mine.  It has seen better days.  @DrillSergeantCat, sorry your neighbor is being a PITA about it.  I hope it gets solved soon so she doesn't scare the next person away who looks at it!
@misskittydanger, whenever I add up grocery prices in my head as I'm shopping, I always get surprised at the real cost.  Apparently, I'm not good at math in my head.  And it can be SO expensive.  Sometimes, I swear, eating out is the same or less if you have coupons (in the states it is).  Btw, Shiny Luster gets my vote!  No reason, just like it better.

Speaking of things adding up, DH and my friends went away this weekend to the Dells.  The town has a candy/fudge shop EVERY 2nd shop.  We all went in, and my friend was SO disappointed his candy purchased added up to $15.00.   He was like "what did I buy?!?"
Ring up our purchase and it was $80.52.  Granted, DH bought some very expensive truffles which hiked the cost up significantly, but still - we LOVE our candy!

  • @CharmedPam  We use a calculator, but I was surprised because we didn't need much. Got a lot ... but it's those damn "mix and match" deals "3 boxes of crackers for $5!" fackkk
    {Fyi use your phone calculator! We started doing that because I shop with a budget, so I wanna make sure I'm under budget ;) }

I really should do that.  I don't shop with a budget.  Just get what I want or need usually, but I was just telling DH that we should be better with our money and stop spending it so frivolously.  Not that food is a frivolous choice - but the amount and prices we pay are.  I do look at prices - he doesn't.

It puts a lot of spending in perspective. I also flyer shop based on what we need, which helps a lot.
If I really need to stick to budget, I make a list of everything in our freezer to see what specifics we need and base a lot of list on that.

edit: I'm a nightmare to shop with XD

    Yeah here's the update:

The fence requirement is very common here, IDKW.  To me, I'm fortunate enough to have a large yard, mostly secured by trees, and a husband who doesn't work all summer.  I'd much rather get the dog home, let it adjust to us and our house and then edit as needed.  I'm not opposed to a fence, but if I'm being 100% honest I'd rather not.  For the cost of the chain link fence alone, I could adopt a bulldog from a breeder for about a grand less, but I'd prefer to rescue.

But this is also a beef I have with rescues.  They complain about how difficult it is to have their pups adopted, but yet have some weird ass criteria.  Why can't a person with a reasonable contingency plan be a candidate.

ETA:  @atomicblonde this is a general rescue, not breed specific.  I don't necessarily disagree with why a fence is preferred, but I think each situation and home should be evaluated for it's merits.  My yard is partially fenced and the rest is wooded in.  I think we just need gates blocking entrance to the road in front.  They require a fully fenced in yard.
