My fiancé and I would like to do a lantern release at the beach with our guests where we are getting married,. Our resort said it was fine as long as we were as close to the shoreline as possible, to keep from the lanterns blowing back towards the hotels.
Our ceremony is right at sunset.
when would be the best time to do it?
Right after ceremony? After dinner?
Any recommendations for brands or types to use?
Any tips are appreciated if you have ever done this as well!
Re: Lantern Release. Yay or Nay?
These are absolutely horrible for the environment, start wildfires and kill/ injure animals. Even the alleged biodegradable ones spook animals and take years to decompose. They have been banned in several countries because how dangerous they are.
Please reconsider using these. Consider doing sparklers if you want the fire element or biodegradable confetti.
Just read this: http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/when-is-the-lantern-festival-in-2016-chinese-fire-hazards-endanger-wildlife-a6889301.html
In addition to that, it's littering. Plain and simple. What comes up must go down. Are you going to go around collecting the lanterns littered all over the place?
I blame hollywood for these ideas. Sure it a cool photo opt, but then it becomes trash to the rest of the world. Could cause a fire, hurt or even kill wildlife. It is really worth the photo opt?
Bubbles and sparklers can make for some cool pictures.
Alternative send-off ideas:
- sparklers
- bubbles
- ribbon dancer things (can't think of what they're called)
- glow sticks
- pinwheels
If you're looking for impact, you could ask the hotel if you could contract a company to set off fireworks. That would be a hell of an end-of-the-night send off.
