Hi all! I've been back to work for a week now and finally have a chance to say hello. I've been lurking here and there over the last few months while I have been home with DD, but not really posting.
Banana - sorry for your loss, but Disney will be fun for you and Chiquita
S+S - sorry about your car! Make sure you look into lemon laws if your insurance won't do anything. In fact, I might start looking into them now anyway - can't hurt!
I'm doing well and DD is getting big and starting to pack on the weight. She is starting to get little rolls! I wish I was able to stay home another month, but I am thankful I was able to get 3 1/2 months with her! She is with my mom for the next few weeks, then my niece for the summer. My mom will pick up a few weeks again, then she will move into daycare in mid-Sept.
H took a test for another computer certification and passed again. So we are going out for some ice cream for dinner to celebrate!
Its hot outside and me no likey. We just finally turned the A/C on for the first time this summer, so can't really complain too much. We do need to figure out how to cool the 2nd floor better though. We have a boxed unit in our bedroom, but that doesn't help in DDs room. And her window is a super huge slider, so it wouldn't be easy to put in a boxed unit there. And my niece will most likely be living with us during the week, so that's another room we will need to figure out how to cool overnight. Its possible we will have to up our timeline for the new A/C so we can get it zoned.
And here are some photos of DD. She is a vampire baby, afraid of the sun - so I've been trying to get her used to sunglasses to help. The other is with her fur-sister Olive. Olive loves to put her head in our laps and roll over for a belly rub, which she did to DD one morning! Olive gives kisses to her sister everyday, its so cute! (I hope they aren't huge!)
@short+sassy oh jeez that's crazy! Would it be better financially to look at a new car instead of fixing this one?
I was thinking "no", because I bought the car for a pretty good deal about three years ago. I bought it for $14K.
But now I'm feeling even more bummed out. I checked out the current Blue Book value for "fun". In "Very Good Condition", which is what it was before all this, it is only worth $7K.
So, I don't know. Maybe I wouldn't want to fix it, if the insurance doesn't come through. I guess it depends on what the final quote is.
Sounds like something you may wanna start looking into, just in case and just to be prepared.
@sparklepants41 glad you guys have a/c! After feeling how warm our upstairs is, I just really don't feel it's gonna get better so we're getting quotes for our place Whooo! 10 weeks! Is lady sparkles moving or still in same spot?
@OliveOilsMom she is so adorable!!!!!!!!! Thank you for sharing pics!!
@MissKittyDanger Beans/Lady Sparkles/Babypants has really been bebopping around lately, especially when I laugh, which is pretty cute. As of my last appointment (nearly 3 weeks ago) she is no longer breach - hooray! I have another appointment & ultrasound next week - I'm super excited!!
@short+sassy do you have an extended warranty? That was the only thing that saved me with my mini. The first month I had the warranty it paid for itself three times over.

No, alas, I don't. I've bought them in the past and just didn't find them very useful. With two other cars, they just barely paid for repairs needed. But what I saved was about the cost of the warranties anyway. Plus, it seems like they are always difficult companies to deal with. And then a third car, I never used the after market warranty in the 3+ years I owned it. And then it got totaled in an accident.
In this case, I'm not even sure an after-market warranty would have helped me anyway. Even a "bumper to bumper" one has a lot of exclusions. My mechanic also thinks the water could have come in from where the convertible top is sealed against the car. But, I don't know, the only place I've ever seen water in the car is on the floor. Not on the interior sides or on the inside of the convertible top.
After market warranties don't cover anything to do with convertible tops or outside flooding. It seems like those are really the only two potentials. Though, now I wish I had one! Just as another potential entity to cover the repairs.
I spoke to the insurance rep assigned to my claim. There should be an adjuster out to the garage sometime tomorrow. At least it is that fast. There are two potential things in my favor. 1) I've been a customer of Progressive for over 15 years, so I'd hope any doubt/uncertainty on the water intrusion would fall to my favor. 2) It's been raining a lot over the last week and there have been areas of flooding. So hopefully the adjuster will already be prejudiced toward "flood".
Here's another bummer, my mechanic told me their garage wouldn't be able to fix the car if that is what I decided to do. He did have a good recommendation, for someplace that would still be reasonable with their pricing. But that garage is busy and couldn't even get my car in for two weeks. Then they have a week free. Then they are closed for a week. So I'd be looking at 5-6 weeks before I have my car back. Ugh.
I love that car. Why did she have to betray me like this?
As an aside @levioosa, my mechanic kind of echoed your comments about MINIs. He said they seem to be great cars. Especially up to about 60K miles. But then, when things start to go bad, it is just one thing after another.
Sorry I keep writing novels, y'all. It helps me to barely keep hold of my sanity, lol.
So sorry for your loss @banana468. It took H I think a full day for the reality to set in when his grandfather passed away.
@short+sassy ugh, that news is awful, I'm so sorry! I'm hoping they're just giving you a higher estimate over the phone.
@OliveOilsMom she's sooooooo cute!! I love the sunglasses pic!
Dog is home, still unnamed, so I'm calling her TBD. I asked a bunch of questions this morning when I picked her up (she isn't spayed so those details were number 1), plus food, crate training, house training stuff. She went into heat when we got home, so I had to run to the store, and try and get a 55 lb dog that barely knows me into a diaper. She seems to like me, but also seems anxious - which is to be expected. The cats are hiding from her which is better than bullying her like they did the German Shepherd pup.
My MOH and another good friend took me out for my low-key bachelorette day on Saturday. I didn't really want anything, but they insisted, and so I agreed but only if it was something simple and didn't involve strippers of any kind. It started with a surprise stand up paddle boarding lesson in the morning (amazing!! I'm hooked) and later pedicures, dinner at a Brazilian steakhouse, and then a bar crawl. I was pretty tired and sore yesterday, still recovering today (I'm too old to try and kick it with the younglings anymore...)
Trying to make sure I haven't forgotten anything now that we are in the home stretch to the wedding (11 days). FH still doesn't have pants, or shoes, but whatever. He can wear something he already has if it comes right down to it. I'm trying not to think about money (we aren't going into debt, almost all of the expenses have been covered by FIL's and the rest is coming out of savings, but I still hate that we have spent so many dollars on one stinking day, to the point that I struggle to sleep at night). I'm working on the seating chart, which is annoying because I have a whole lot of "maybes" that will probably just turn up (or not) on the day. Considering only assigning tables for immediate family (so 4 tables) and then just letting the rest fend for themselves. We have room for an extra table or two if we want to do that, so I just might.
Followed up on the hand with my doctor and I have to keep it immobilized and Netflix keeps judging me, asking if I'm still watching. Yes, Netflix I'm still watching. At least the cat is keeping me company.
@kimmiinthemitten, your new dog is so cute! My vote is for Abigail or Abby.
I had an awesome weekend, starting with a terrific meeting Friday night and capped off with some way-overdue BCBC last night. It was so disorienting to go back to work today.
Four days and a wake-up till my staycation starts! It can't get here soon enough.
@short+sassy I believe I had WarrantyDirect, and they didn't give me any problems. I had about $14K in repairs by the time I sold back my car to the dealer. I think the warranty was $2700 and it was good up to 100K. But it was so worth it. Just in case you are considering getting one. When I talked to the rep they were like "don't get one for a toyota, or a honda, those cars last forever. But the mini will be worth it." It totally was.

If the car ends up getting fixed, I think I will buy an after market warranty. It currently has 68K miles and, from reading your posts and talking to my mechanic, I think that is potentially starting to get into the "danger zone".
Other than this huge exception...which is water intrusion related, as opposed to parts breaking down...it's been a really reliable car. It was about 4 years old when I bought it and I've been driving it for over 3 years now. The only thing I've had to do, other than oil changes, were replacing the spark plugs.
I'll keep Warranty Direct in mind.
I also realized last night that, if my insurance company determines the damage is flood related, I also have rental insurance with them. Yet another big reason I am rooting for Team Insurance.
@short+sassy do you have a mini cooper or mini cooper S? They S's have waaaayyyy more problems. I had to replace my turbo at around 70K. The classic minis are much more reliable and most of the time people don't have a ton of complaints about them.

Also...mini cooper forums are your friend. lol
No, I just have the basic MINI, not the S or the really racy "John Cooper". It's even a manual transmission. That's good to hear that it is (hopefully) the more reliable version!
I never thought about looking for a MINI forum. Thanks for the tip. Looks like my boring day at work now has a plan, lol.
