Sprucing Up a 'Boring' Centerpiece

I want to use carnations (large bunches) as the centerpieces for my reception tables. Any ideas on what I can do to make them less 'boring' and less "Look, I'm a bunch of flowers in a vase on a table"?

Try incorporating  a few candles of the same color. Instead of one big vase of carnations, do a few smaller ones cut short at different lengths.  Bunch them all together on a mirror.  I did something like this for a cousin's wedding (sorry - b/f digital so no pics).  Instead of spending a fortune on mirrors though, I went ot Home Depot and got a box of mirrored tiles.

The mirrored tiles and candles like pps suggested are always a great added touch.

A solid mass of blooms, fully opened, preferably all one color will a more dramatic statement.  Especially if you put something under the container in a contrasting color or texture that makes the flowers stand out.

A charger plate, table runner, or just a cloth napkin under the container will add a nice touch.  With carnations, make sure the blooms have had a couple of days to fully open to get the maximum efffect.  You can always add some filler flowers, like statice, solidago, or mini carnations, or some hypericum berries for contrast and added fullness.

You could also add some flower jewels to the bouquets.

You can put the vase on a mirror or those gold cake doilies, add candles, add floralytes to the vase for color, color the water, um um, add acrylic rocks, marbles, or water gems to the vase for something different.
