Explain bralettes to me

Do they actually support or do they just have cute bra straps? Is this trend for the small and perky? I'm old and have nursed three babies.

Re: Explain bralettes to me

  • I'm average size {34B} and I own one. They're super comfortable and depending where you go {I got mine at VS} they're pretty supportive.

Think of it like a sports bra basically.
  • never even heard of this.  My google search comes up with a cute sports bra type thing yeah.

  • There is a BuzzFeed video where large chested women try them out that helped me go from 0 knowledge to at least a bit about what they were. In the end, the amount of support varies depending on the brand/style as with most bras.
  • I've always thought of a bralette as a dainty little, lace thing.  That has a band with less full coverage for the cups.  But that doesn't sound like what you all are describing.

For me and what I'm thinking of, they'd only work as a headband, lol.  So it isn't something I've looked into at all and hence my "definition" might be off.

  • I think they are targeting towards the small and perky. Young women who are wearing them with clothes that show them off.
  • Ya, I've only seen bralettes that are basically a piece of lace. I had a dress once that I thought would look cute with one underneath. I tried like 10 different ones on. Being a 34DD, they did NOT work for me, it was horrible lol. The sales woman kept insisting they would work and wanted to come in and see, HELL NO haha.

I think you're right 6, they are for the small and perky lol
  • something for the ibtc.
  • I'm part of the ibtc, and I only look for support support support!  I don't get it....

  • When I hear bralette, it makes me think of first time bras for pre-teens/teens.  No way could I ever wear them.  I'm a 40DD and I search forever just to get a bra that fits!  And then I buy a bunch of them, even though they are exactly the same!  It's always a sad day when I go to buy more and they have discontinued the style and I have to start my search all over again!

mine is lace on the outside but normal fabric inside
  • I wear mine over my bras if they may show so I have something cuter showing.  They're often times more comfortable than a cami IMO.

wait, showing your bra straps is a thing again? I feel like I remember it from the 90s...although it seems like most of the 90s have made a comeback

Verdict is I'm too old and busty to pull this off.

yupppp like kids calling shirts 'crop tops'! No child, sit down. Those are belly tops.

Funny!  I've actually never heard the term "belly top".  I usually call those shirts "mid-riffs", but have also heard "crop tops".

Perhaps this is one of those regional "what do you call a soda" or "what do you call a purse" questions, lol.

  • I'm a 34H. Therefore, I cannot explain them to you.
Same. My boobs laugh at bralettes. They don't even make them in my size.

That's very possible. Seems like 'crop tops' is across the board though *sigh*

I was born in 1975.  Crop tops is the only term I've heard.
  • I've seen even some moms talking about how bra straps peeking out isn't awful.   I can't bring myself to do that unless i'm in "play clothes" .
  • I have a couple. I'm a 34D, in my 30s and nursed one baby. I do not wear them for support. I wear them to feel swanky casual (yes, a dress code I made up for myself) and to bed sometimes.

side note: right now all the shirts at my favorite stores are crop tops and it's so freaking annoying. Even when I was really thin I didn't want to wear them. Now I especially don't want to wear them. Stop ruining shirts by cutting them in half. And also please stop putting cut outs in every freaking dress. I just want a normal sundress ffs.

I have a few long tank tops in case I find the odd crop top I like.
The cut outs on the shoulder is actually a lot nicer on than on hanger - fyi

I was born in '87 and the term was mostly used in the 90s .... but maybe it is an area thing

It seems like lately, the shirts I'm seeing are see-through, thin fabrics.  At first glance, they don't look like they're see through.  But I do the "hand check" and can clearly see the outlines of my fingers through the fabric.

Not a fan of cut outs either.

Thankfully it's been a long time since I needed to buy a suit, but that was my other annoyance.  If I'm working somewhere that involves the kind of formal dress that dictates a suit, I can guarantee you that skirt needs to at least hit my knee.  Not my mid-thigh.  What the serious f**k?  This is real life.  Not an episode of Ally McBeal (sorry for the blast from the past tv show mention).

  • Also, as someone really small chested, I'm not a fan of the bralette because...pointing.

Oh goodness, so annoying. And everything is baggy. Loose and flowy is the trend. I wish there was more slim fit stuff that just skimmed the body.

Also, I have such a problem with the neckline of shirts. They're either high necked or cut too low. I like a nice v-neck that doesn't show cleavage, and there's nothing. Nothing in the middle ground.
  • Im a 36DDD and I finally found one that fits well and the cost was right (target for the win). I love it, but I don't wear it for support and I have to be aware that I may nip and be okay with it. I hope to find more, but being larger chested means there are less options out there for me. Sometimes its nice to not have to pick the battle between wires digging in and constraining sports bras.
