Let's talk cosmetics

Since it's getting colder out (for some of us), my dry skin is becoming even more drier.  I can't find anything that works.  This could possibly be in part of my foundation too.  I did buy Noxzema moisturizing cream to wash my face with (I remember it being very good in the past for me) but as far as moisturizer and foundation, I'm willing to get some recommendations.

Right now I use a "gold bond: diabetics lotion" and some organic stuff off of amazon for cream and my foundation is "missha".  What do you guys swear by?

Re: Let's talk cosmetics

  • Do you use a toner before you moisturize? I added this into my routine about 6 months ago (morning and night) and have noticed a huge difference in my skin! (I'm also super dry).

Another thing I found really helpful was to switch from a full on foundation to a CC cream. It is lighter, has moisturizer in it and keeps my skin from rebounding really bad. It's not as full coverage as a foundation but it still evens things out and takes away redness.

My go to face cream is Cetaphil with SPF. If you haven't tried it, it's awesome!
  • I have such dry skin, and I feel like I've finally got it under control.

For cleansing, I use products from 100 Percent Pure. Also the Neutrogena wipes.
For moisturizing, I use Philosphy Hope In A Jar. I love it. No more dry, patchy, flaky skin!
I've been using this for foundation for a while:
    https://www.sephora.com/product/born-this-way-P397517?skuId=1711993&icid2=products grid:p397517

but have also liked this in the past:

    https://www.sephora.com/product/ultra-hd-invisible-cover-foundation-P398321?skuId=1708957&icid2=products grid:p398321

I've found both foundations to be good for dry skin.
  • I was with a charcoal bar soap in the morning. I use a prescription Rosacea cream the oil of Olay complete with spf. I use ponds for a makeup remover and A few night a week i slather on ponds moisturizer.
  • I have combination skin that tends to err on the oily side - except in the dead of winter when it can get chapped and dry (thanks, Boston winds!!), so my regimen is pretty simple.

I drink a LOT of water, which helps balance out my skin regardless if it's dry or oily.

For moisturizer, I love Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel. For a cleanser, I use Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel. And my "foundation" is Laura Mercier oil free tinted moisturizer. If I am having a breakout or an oily day, I go old school and use 90% rubbing alcohol before I moisturize.

I love that you use Noxzema - I love the way it smells! My cousin uses that because she has the same complexion as our grandmother who is almost 97 and has used it for almost as long as it has been in existence. Our grandmother didn't wrinkle until she was well into her 60s - my cousin is hoping that her use of Noxzema will do the same for her lol!
  • I also use Philosophy's Hope in a Jar with SPF as a daily moizturizer and the IT Cosmetics CC cream as a foundation. Then I use a powder foundation and setting powder. I LOVE the Hope in a Jar, but I do use a lot more of it than the Benefit, which is what I used previously (but they discontinued the kind with SPF).

This is what made me think of that! I was like...let's go back to the basics! Before beauty products like this took over the world!

I have the same problem. This summer I was using a color correcting (I have issues with redness as well) tinted moisturizer instead of foundation and I definitely noticed a positive difference. Now that I am wanting more coverage I am using the tinted moisturizer under my foundation.

ETA: I hit send without finishing my thought.

I've also recently started using Rodan and Fields daily moisturizer because my friend sells it and I've noticed a huge difference in her skin and her husbands plus she gave me free samples. I like it so far but haven't been using it long enough to really recommend it but if you know someone who sells it, I'd see if they have samples to at least try. It's way more expensive than my typical routine but I'm going to give it a shot!
  • I've had a lot of luck with good moisture from Neutrogena's hyaluronic acid moisturizer:

    https://www.neutrogena.com/skin/skin-moisturizers/neutrogena-hydro-boost-gel-cream-extra-dry-skin/6811048.html

  • Ack! I legit am so stoked about this feed :)

@CharmedPam Find a good hydrating moisturizer. Have 2. One for day, one for night. My mum swears by Olay - I often use coconut oil at night in small spots on my skin that get dry from the wind. Clinique has a great hydrating one, but Nivea is drugstore dupe.
For day, moisturizer > primer > foundation. The primer will give your skin that extra boost.

    I actually just started a new skin care routine because it's cold out. I just got Rimmel stay matte primer, and the mousse foundation {also matte}
I'm also going to be using a miscellar water to remove a good amount of my makeup. Since my chin is breaking out, I opted for sensitive/oily option.
We'll see how that works. I'm not big on using coconut oil on my T-zone since it's tempermental.

Try a bb cream. If you have oily skin, I'm going to shove you towards the Benefit Bigger than BB cream lol - liquid to powder and great coverage. 100% better than tinted moisturizer

I don't.  what do you use?

And thanks, @climbingwife, I will look into those suggestions.  I used the hd before and it dried out my skin too....unless it was that with the moisturizer i was using at the time?

  • I get it off Amazon. It's called Thayer's Witch Hazel Rose Petal Toner.
  • pretty much anything by Peter Thomas Roth. The Hylauronic Cloud cream is a fantastic moisturizer - light and absorbs quickly with no greasy residue.

    https://www.peterthomasroth.com/product/water-drench/water-drench-hyaluronic-cloud-cream/1801012/each

this is a promotion right now, and you'd get the cleanser, serum, and moisturizer for the regular price of the moisturizer:
    https://www.peterthomasroth.com/product/water-drench/ready,-set,-drench!/9908214/each

I also love his masks - a good way to try several is to get one of the maskaholic kits. The offering is switched around every 6 months or so.
    https://www.sephora.com/product/mask-a-holic-kit-P424960?skuId=1977016&icid2=ptr_whatsnew_us_carousel:p424960
currently includes: irish moor mud (clarifying), 24K gold (brightening, refreshing), pumpkin enzyme (exfoliating), cucumber (hydration, refreshing), and the 24K undereye patches. I've used all of these, and i like them for different reasons. i will usually use the moor mud on my t-zone to clear it out, while i use the 24K on my cheeks. i use the 24K by itself all over or with the eye patches - skin looks amazing afterwards. the pumpkin is an exfoliator on 2 levels - there is a grit to it, so you have some physical exfoliation along with the enzymes for a chemical exfoliation. I will use this first and then usually follow up with his blue marine algae mask (may have been discontinued - it wasn't as popular) or rose stem cell mask, or cucumber mask to hydrate and refresh. after the mask, i'll moisturize with the cloud cream.

I love the cleansers too - irish moor mud and rose stem cell are my favorites.

PTR's line is available from Sephora, direct from his website, and in a limited selection at Ulta. They also started carrying it on QVC, and I've gotten some good deals on there - like on the retinol night serum. I usually buy from Sephora or PTR direct depending on promos. For first time use, i usually buy from Sephora because of their excellent return policy. They will also give you free samples of any product if you go in and ask. (good way to try out some of the higher end products to see if it's worth the splurge)

I used some of the PTR 24k sheet masks and undereye patches (24K and cucumber) on our international flights to/from Australia, and my skin looked awesome post-flight. I wouldn't get them for $11-12/ea, but when there's a sale on the travel sizes and they're $5ish, it was well worth it. https://www.sephora.com/product/un-wrinkle-24k-gold-intense-wrinkle-sheet-mask-P401606?skuId=1737782&icid2=products%20grid:p401606

  • @*Barbie* I've heard interesting things about the PTR, especially the gold one? Idk what it's called but it's interesting. I'm always curious about some skin care but nervous about branching out about it.
  • I'm one of those people who found the most success with the simplest products. I use Trader Joe's SPF 15 moisturizer on a daily basis (it's like a generic Oil of Olay moisturizer, which my mom swears by and her skin's pretty great). Their daily face wash is also great for me. I don't wear any makeup on my face daily except for concealer under my eyes.

When I want to look a little more polished, I use a BB cream and top it off with regular pressed powder. Right now I'm using a BB cream from the Body Shop and really like it.

Anything that claims to do anything but wash or moisturize my face tends to make me break out, ironically.  The plainer the product, the better.

  • @*barbie*, with that promo, I had to buy it!  Plus it came with free shipping and a "skin to die for" sample, so let's see if it works?  I also have the toner and hope in a jar in my "wish list" on amazon as back up though.

Now I must find a foundation that doesn't dry out the skin.  I may go to sephora and ask someone there.  Or what do you suggest?  a department store instead?

  • @CharmedPam - Philosophy's products are generally good as well. I've used samples of Hope in Jar before, and I love their Purity facial cleanser. I have a big pump bottle of the Purity in my shower, and use the PTR cleansers when i wash my face in the sink.

I just put the PTR promo in my cart - thanks for asking! I may as well stock up now. :-)
  • I swear by Philosophy's Purity facial cleanser! I have been using Algenist night cream, firming neck cream and eye cream. I use a zinc sunscreen moisturizer recommended by my derm- Elle. I use the IT CC cream on top of that. I have extremely fair skin so try to limit sun exposure.
  • Oh I just thought of something else. If you ever want to use a mask to help your skin.... you know the Blue Lagoon in Iceland? They sell their spa products online. I went there on vacation a year ago and oh. my. god. My skin felt like a baby's behind for several days after smearing their silica and algae stuff on my skin. It was amazing. It's also crazy expensive but honestly, if you're feeling flush with cash, treat yo self.

  • I use a mix of things.

To remove my makeup I use Garnier micellular water and it does a great job of removing everything.
I then follow it with a Mario Badescu Cleansing Milk with Carnation and Rice Oil
    http://www.ulta.com/cleansing-milk-with-carnation-rice-oil?productId=xlsImpprod6200751
I use his Aloe Vera toner too along with a part water part witch hazel toner
    http://www.ulta.com/aloe-vera-toner?productId=xlsImpprod6200781
I also use two different moisturizers, i use both at night and then in the morning i use just the neutrogena
    one is Mario Badescu
    http://www.ulta.com/buttermilk-moisturizer?productId=xlsImpprod6200703
    the other is a Neutrogena
    http://www.ulta.com/buttermilk-moisturizer?productId=xlsImpprod6200703

I also second PTR and his masks. I got a kit that was $25 and had like 7 mini masks in there for you to try.

For primers I use this Too Faced one, its more on the pricey side, but as far as primers go this is the only one that I can feel my skin staying hydrated all day.
    http://www.ulta.com/hangover-replenishing-face-primer?productId=xlsImpprod10751024

Foundation I'm still trying out, currently I'm using the Maybelline FitMe foundation

    What!!! Hahahah wow. That sucks.

3.4 fl oz of the silica mud mask is $115, same for the algae mask. You can get .68 oz for $59 for the algae. They have a whole bunch of other products too.

  • My Dermatologist recommended using bonded products from the same line as they are designed to go together. She had a list of 20 or so lines. I’ve been using Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser and alternating between the Neutrogena Deep Moisture night cream and Neutrogena Moisture Day Lotion. She told me to ensure I exfoliated only 1-2 times per week and only in the shower and to use the night cream after. She also recommended doubling my water intake.

Im in a dry, cold climate and with her recommendations, this is the longest stretch I’ve gone since puberty without flaky skin.
  • Thanks CharmedPam for starting this.  My moisturizer was just discontinued and I haven't yet been able to find one I like.  I want SPF, since I don't wear other makeup, and the 2 I've tried have felt so heavy and have made me look pretty oily by the end of the day.  I've tried Cetaphil daily moisturizer with SPF and Oil of Olay Regenerist with SPF.  Might have to try the Philosophy recommendation

  • Also Sephora has a 15% off sale if you’re in the Beauty Insider rewards program (20% off if you’re VIb), that last through tomorrow.
  • I have used Noxema my entire life and still do!  I have horribly dry skin.

My best creams are Cetaphil and CeraVe for my face.  I alternate with Gold Bond, Eucerin, and L'Occitane creams for the body.  I will also use Aquaphor with gloves at night with my hands.

Yeah, this is an expensive time of year for me - although I do a lot of stock up during their annual sale. I told DK if he was Christmas shopping, this was the time to stop at Sephora.

I told M the same thing. And to use my rewards card.
