I know we've occasionally discussed this before, but my ire is up again when I read the below article. The Missouri House of Rep voted to ban marriage for anyone under the age of 15. And there were 50 legislatures who opposed that. Really?!?!
Who, in their right mind, would think it's totes fine for children to get married. I don't care if a judge and/or parents give their approval.
Opponents of the bill stated that the government and judges shouldn't be made in decisions like marriage. Huh? Marriage certificates are literally issued by the government. The government decides all KINDS of s**t that affects its citizens.
Like age limits on when a person can legally buy alcohol or cigarettes. Or lottery tickets. Or entering a casino or a strip club. Or getting a driver's license/permit.
But a huge, life altering decision like getting married should be "hands off" for the government? While, at the same time, age limits to buy a lottery ticket or pack of cigs are an absolute "must". Because children don't necessarily have very good judgement.
I think a better question is, why doesn't every state ALREADY have a law like this, ffs?
Yet 27 states don't have any minimum age to get married. At all.
The first part of my rant is all the logical reasons there should be such laws. But, more importantly, we all know the "children" getting married are usually females being wed to older men. And, at best, heavily coerced by their own parents.
Sorry it also includes a slant on Louisiana's laws. It's from my local paper's website.
