Minimum ages to buy liquor and cigarettes, but not to get married?

I know we've occasionally discussed this before, but my ire is up again when I read the below article.  The Missouri House of Rep voted to ban marriage for anyone under the age of 15.  And there were 50 legislatures who opposed that.  Really?!?!

Who, in their right mind, would think it's totes fine for children to get married.  I don't care if a judge and/or parents give their approval.

Opponents of the bill stated that the government and judges shouldn't be made in decisions like marriage.  Huh?  Marriage certificates are literally issued by the government.  The government decides all KINDS of s**t that affects its citizens.

Like age limits on when a person can legally buy alcohol or cigarettes.  Or lottery tickets.  Or entering a casino or a strip club.  Or getting a driver's license/permit.

But a huge, life altering decision like getting married should be "hands off" for the government?  While, at the same time, age limits to buy a lottery ticket or pack of cigs are an absolute "must".  Because children don't necessarily have very good judgement.

I think a better question is, why doesn't every state ALREADY have a law like this, ffs?

Yet 27 states don't have any minimum age to get married.  At all.

The first part of my rant is all the logical reasons there should be such laws.  But, more importantly, we all know the "children" getting married are usually females being wed to older men.  And, at best, heavily coerced by their own parents.

Sorry it also includes a slant on Louisiana's laws.  It's from my local paper's website.

  • Also your governor @VarunaTT; WTF is up with that?!
  • I am so glad he was indicted and I hope he's found guilty.  It's still very up in the air, because (as of last night) the defendant is still refusing to testify and Greitans is still denying it (but also doesn't seem to want to have his day in court).  I was horrified when that story came out and rumors are that there are many more affairs, which makes me worry that there is more abuse.

That man is an asshole of the first degree.  I still can't believe his damn campaign commercial that was him shooting a gun.  It was so unbelievably patriarchal is so many ways.  Hell, he's a patriarchy poster boy.

Missouri politics are a cancer right now.  There are so many cishet white men who are just gaming and abusing the system for their rush of power.  There are those fighting against it, but it's a damn hard fight.

The MO Republicans don't like listening to Dems, but especially no freshmen Dems.  So, they've been pulling some parliamentary procedure bullshit to shut down the freshman Dems.  Last night, they pulled the same shit and the rep that was talking yelled, "Seriously?" and went to the Speaker and lit the Speaker up.  The Speaker shut down the legislature for the day.  And the person lined up to be the new Speaker is the same damn gross story.

I was just so absolutely stunned that more than half the states don't even have a minimum age requirement for marriage.  Utter insanity.  Obviously one would hope that no judge anywhere would allow a 10-year-old to get married, but there is no law prohibiting it in those states.

I could maybe have even chalked that up to being an archaic law oversight...like you'll sometimes see an article listing funny laws that are still on the books, ie you can't whistle on Sunday while leading your mule down the main street.

Except it has been a problem and has helped victimize girls.  So when a law finally came up to address this issue, that should have just been a rubber-stamped no-brainer, there were 50 legislators who opposed it.  That's not an "archaic law" oversight.

  • Wow.   I'm lucky that at least in this state it's the same age for men and women.  18 w/o parental consent and 16 w/ parental consent.   My MIL needed her mom to sign off on her "throwing her life away" to marry FIL.   They're still together 46 years later.

  • That is true, thank you.
  • It's not exactly a secret that low (or no) age restrictions for marriage adversely affect solely women, so I'm not at ALL shocked that conservatives won't address the issue. "Child husbands" (versus "brides") isn't a thing.

If it were older women  taking advantage of and marrying young boys, you bet men on capital hill (republicans and democrats alike) would be addressing this with a sense of priority.
If half the shit that affected women also impacted men the same way, our laws would look a lot different.
