Wedding Woes

Your mom is a jerk.

Dear Prudence,

My mom and I are very close and have been most of my life. If she witnesses something awful like an animal being hurt or killed, she tends to give all the details. A few years ago, I started dealing with my anxiety. I suffer from intrusive thoughts and images, and I’ve realized a number of these images come from her descriptions of what she’s witnessed. Over the last year, if she’s started to describe something awful, I ask her to stop and say I can’t hear it. Sometimes she takes this in stride and sometimes she gets upset, but it always stops the conversation. I feel bad because I know this must be a way for her to process what she saw, but I cannot take it. I know her boyfriend also asks her to stop when she does this, so I know she doesn’t have someone else to talk to about it. But I just can’t take the visuals—it makes me so upset. Is there a better way I should be handling this? Am I in the wrong and should I just find a better way to deal with my anxiety about these things?

  • How often does this woman see things being hurt or killed, FFS?!?!
    Right?!?
  • "So I was at the cock fight the other night, and it was just horrible! Let me tell you all about it!"

Seriously, ShesSoCold had it right. Why on earth is this woman seeing so many terrible things?

  • "Mom.   I can't listen to this.   I'm going to have to (walk away, hang up the phone, take a different car) if you keep it up. "

Maybe suggest that Mom herself get a therapist or a journal??

ShesSoCold - that was my thought right away.  How many horrible things does she see??  Maybe she works at a shelter or a vet's office.  Some of my friends who work in those places see some pretty awful things.  But if that's the case, she should have people at work she can talk to about what she sees.  Or maybe she needs a therapist.

  • Maybe it's not always things the mom witnesses personally?  Because, yeah, I was also wondering what kind of life this woman is leading, lol.

Maybe sometimes it is news stories she found upsetting and needs a way to get them off her chest.  My H and I talk about news stories.  Sometimes they're heartbreaking.  Every once in awhile, one of us will stop the other with a request like, "Please stop, I'm finding it too upsetting and can't hear the rest of this."

I think it would help for her to have this discussion with her mom, outside of any story telling.  Like, "I know it hurts your feelings sometimes when I stop you in the middle of a story.  But I have trouble with my anxiety and sometimes I need to do that, for my own well being."  In addition, if the LW knows of particular triggers/types of stories that he/she is more sensitive to, I would also give the mom a heads up to not even start those stories with me.

  • Farm life can seem brutal - maybe her mom is on a farm ... I remember when I talked to people who didn't grow up in the country, some of my stories that seemed so benign to me were actually very upsetting to others.

  • "Mom I have a great therapist I've been working on my anxiety with; would you like me to get you a recommendation for dealing with these terrible images?"
