Introduction Songs

Need some help with introduction songs.

MIL announced she expects to be introduced at the reception. I just wanted to have the parents stand up at the table. I thought this would be easier because his parents are divorced. His dad is engaged, but his mother is single. If we are going to have them introduced, I want to do a separate song for them from the BP and my fiance and I. I don't really know what song though. I could ask them, but they will probably never agree on one song. My parents are about 20 years younger than his so their tastes are very different. If we had them each pick a song then we would have to have 3 separate songs (1 for my parents, one for his father and father's fiancee, and 1 for his mother and whoever escort's her) and I think 3 songs just for parents is way too much. Let me know if there is a song you think would be good.

For my bridal party, I believe we are going to do P!nk - Get The Party Started. At one point, I considered having different songs for each couple from the year that we first started dating, but that seemed like too much and our DJ agreed. I am debating picking like 4 songs and sending them to each member of our bridal party and letting them say which song they like better and whichever song has the most votes then that will be the song we go with. I would like them to have some say which is why I like this idea. Let me know what you think.

Lastly, I have no idea what song to have for my fiance and I. Any recommendations would be great!

One song for all the parents is enough. Jazz or swing-type music is usually a crowd-pleaser, and all your parents might be able to agree on it. I’ll try to post a list later.

As for you and your fiancé, is there a particular song that’s special to you but not your first dance song?

The screenshots are a playlist I made for my DW.

  • It isn't necessary to introduce the parents at the reception - DD didn't do so at her wedding. IMO everyone already knows who the parents are anyway since they are seated during the processional (usually). So if you don't want to do that, don't.  I agree with keeping it to one song for the bridal party. The key thing is to keep introductions brief. No one enjoys watching a production of a bridal introduction (contrary to what social media would have you think).

I feel like fighting with my MIL isn't a battle I want to get into. If she wants to be introduced at the wedding so be it. I have a million other things to worry about.
  • I did have the parents introduced into the reception. This seems to be very common in my circle.

I'd choose just one song for the parents, and I'd go with something classic. Maybe We Are Family? Something from The Beatles or Stevie Wonder?

I'd also just pick one song for the bridal party, and I'd pick it myself. I think that Pink song is good.

I used just one song - Boogie Shoes.
  • Thank you for your help!

We had also considered doing Timber by Kesha and Pitpull for the bridal party. My fiance loves both singers so I know he was leaning more towards that so maybe we could do that song for them and then Get the Party Started by Pink for the parents. My mom said she likes I Got a Feeling by Black Eyed Peas which I have seen as a popular suggestion.

Thank you for the suggestions. Not sure how my parents would feel about the Beatles because they were not even born yet when the Beatles became popular. I had thought We Will Rock You by Queen, but my mother said no. I thought it was a good song that most people know and would get the crowd involved.

Parents are introduced in my circle too.  I don’t remember what song I went with but it was definitely the same song for the parents AND the BP.  I think it was either Pink “get this party started” or Black Eyed Peas “lets get it started”.  I definitely remember H and I came in to “signed sealed delivered” :)

I honestly wouldn’t consult with parents and BP on song choice- just pick something upbeat that you like.
  • I've never seen parents of the couple introduced at wedding receptions (although I have seen it at bar/bat mitzvahs), but it isn't mandatory.

If you want to do it, I myself would offer them choices of pre-approved songs (by you and your FI) and then let them pick the songs from that list.
  • Yeah - whether or not you were alive for the music sounds silly.   I wasn't born when Sinatra was at peak but I danced with my dad to one of his tunes.

Pick something that's just easy to walk to.   I think our parents walked into something jazzy and then we went with Aerosmith and Run DMC's "Walk This Way".

If FMIL has someone to walk her down the aisle at the wedding I'd also ask that person to escort her into the wedding reception.

I know my parents don't like the Beatles. They like either current music or music from when they were teenagers. They aren't into classic or jazz. I also know my MIL likes John Denver, Garth Brooks and other country music. Not sure what my FIL likes. I know he doesn't like rap or hip hop, but I feel like no matter we pick someone won't like it. So I'm like screw it let's pick something we like.

The plan is to have FMIL walk down the aisle with my mother since my dad will be walking me down the aisle. Then at the reception my parents will walk together so not sure who is walking into the reception with my FMIL which was another reason I thought just having them stand that their seats would be better.

The more I think about it, the more I'm like this is our wedding so we should do what we want. My fiance doesn't care if his parents are introduced so maybe we should just put our foot down and tell her no.

My goodness.   How old are your parents?  I'm not even 40 but I grew up listening to the Beatles.   But now they're oldies and Pearl Jam is on the classic rock station because 1990 isn't 10 years ago.

What about just random background music?  Most DJs play jazzy music that doesn't have to have a singable tune but it's upbeat to walk to.  It's kind of the standard 'listen to this while you eat wedding salad' music.

The walk is SO fast that there's no need to really over-think it.

Your FMIL could just walk in by herself.   That's fine too.

In the grand scheme of things, this is all of 30 seconds.   Don't sweat it.
  • Why can't/aren't you using the same song for everyone? Parents, bridal party and you? I feel like these intros take like two minutes total so I think it would be really weird to keep hearing 15 seconds of a song before it cuts into another.

And why does everyone have to like the song? It never would have even occurred to me to ask people's opinion on that. This is such a non-problem. Go with the Pink song and call it a day.

Mom is 43 and dad is 47. Mom likes 80s music and current music and dad likes Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, and 90s rock.

I know I am over-thinking, but I just to have my bases covered. FMIL said she wants to walk with either her sister's husband or her friend's boyfriend. This is how we found out she expected to be announced because she said something like "so I was thinking Bob or Dave would walk into the reception with me when I am introduced." I kind of just looked at her because we hadn't even made any decisions about introductions and she just assumed she would be introduced.

They don't have to like it. I just thought it might be nice if they did. We for sure what to walk out to something different than the bridal party and parents.
  • I definitely think you're putting too much thought into this. Just pick a song you like.

That is what I am going to do or just eliminate the parent introductions.

If it is causing you this much of a headache eliminate the introductions. Seriously, no one will miss them. The only thing your guests will remember is if the food, drink and music was good - and cake! I couldn't even tell you what song my daughter/sil and their wedding party walked into for introductions much less any other wedding I've been to. Like I said earlier parents weren't introduced at her's.

This.   I personally think it's nice to do this for the parents but they aren't marrying the song.   As long as it's tolerable it's fine.
  • The guests will thank you for short introductions, no matter what song you pick. So pick one.
