Re: Wednesday

  • Thanks @Casadena, I've been thinking about you and your H as well!
  • Our local HyVee grocery store has meal kits in the deli area.  They are also offering low carb meal prep sessions.  You come in to the store and prepare 6 freezer meals for $100.  Each meal serves 4-6 people.  I may do this at some point.  They also offer to have these meals ready to go and you just pick them up for a higher cost.

We were gifted a week of Blue Apron several years ago and liked most of the meals.  Haven't tried any of the other companies.

It's snowing here (1-3") and it's expected to turn to rain/ice.  Yuck.  My husband drives a route out of town and they called him back to the shop this afternoon due to road conditions.  Fortunately any snow and ice won't last long this time of year.

  • Holy shit 11 months?! Noooooope.

Yeah, Pam, we're not huge BWW people but we had a gift card and I sit down and try to find something I can eat and everything was like, more than my daily allotment of points. I don't remember what I got but it was not worth the points. Maggiano's was the same way. I'll never forget the first time I opened Maggiano's in the WW app and every entree was like 60+ points.
Right?  Because when I piece meals together on my own it’s never as much as the “restaurant guide”.  So clearly I *AM* doing it wrong.  And yeah I do suck at ww.  Eating out and counting points is just so stressful.

Now I want to look at these meal delivery kits again, but I’m guessing I’d need 2 to feed us.
  • My funny for the day.  Realtor.com automatically sends listings to my e-mail that are within the parameters I set.

I see the e-mail and it's a pretty good sized two-story house (2500 sq ft) painted completely in light lavender with a white trim.  It's actually a great color and looks nice with that style of house.  But the first thing you notice is the color and it does smack you in the face with, "Now THAT'S a lavender house!"

I glance at the address and almost fell over in my chair laughing so hard.  It's on Lavender Street!  Whoever chose that paint color is awesome and shares my sense of humor, lol.

If anyone's interested, you can see for yourself:

So I just discovered something! I have a mealplanning app called meal lime. you pick whatever meals you want and it makes a grocery list for you. It combines items too that are used in multiple recipes. Well I just saw you can import the list to instacart and it will find the items at Aldi (grocery store near me) and delivery is only $4. This may be a game-changer!!
Thanks for this.  I especially like the combined ingredients feature, which is my biggest pet peeve cooking for 2!

    TRUTH!!!!

I’ve thought about the meal prep kits, but it would be too tricky to find something we can both eat. DW is a meat and potatoes girl (and somewhat picky) and I’m trying to go vegan. Lucky’s (sort of a cross between Earth Fare and Aldi) offers meal kits for two people, but it’s never something that appeals to us. I usually just end up making two meals, or if I make something vegetarian or vegan, I’ll add meat to DW’s part (e.g. I make a basic chili and then cook meat separately for DW, or if I make vegetable soup, I’ll make a sandwich with deli meat or cheese for her).

Today was much better than yesterday. Only three emergencies, and I had a very productive day apart from that. I did some shopping, came home and walked the dogs, cleaned up the kitchen, threw in some laundry and wrote a thank-you note for a late wedding gift, SD’s Easter card, and MIL’s Passover card. Now I have to finish my book club book; I’m about halfway through. I need to resist the urge to reread Harry Potter instead.  :D

Haha same! And mine meets Monday.

Honestly, if you’re ordering any veggie option, I don’t think the meal kits are worth $60/wk.  The meat is the expensive part! My friend is vegetarian and her hubby is not.  She does the same thing by adding meat later or sometimes just cooks a meaty meal for him.

That was another problem I had with the meal kits at Hello Fresh.  I didn't think there were enough options to choose from for any given week.

Either the recipes were TOO basic and something I could and have so easily cooked up myself.  Or they were something either my H or I wouldn't like.  Neither one of us are that picky, EXCEPT my H won't eat seafood other than shrimp.  So that would automatically eliminate 1-2 options/week because there are understandably always some fish choices.

I also side-eyed that the only side they could come up with for 90% of their meals was something to do with potatoes.  So dumb and boring.  To me, meal kits are about expanding one's cooking horizons and being more creative with meals.  And that's certainly what they like to advertise.  But steak fries or cubes of potato fried in a pan are the OPPOSITE of that.  Plus, I personally don't even care for most potato dishes and find them time-consuming to deal with.  I almost never buy them.
