Re: Don’t make your bridesmaids wear these!

  • Oh wow these are bad. A few of them remind me of bridesmaid dresses Fran had to wear on The Nanny!

  • That was hilarious!  Though I'd say for a good third of that list, it wasn't so much that the dresses were terrible as it was the dress styles were very dated.

  • A lot of these were Irish Traveller/ Gypsy weddings that were on a pretty shameful tv series in the UK called 'my big fat gypsy wedding'. I know you might not know this, but they are a group that is very discriminated against in Europe. There is a lot of "poverty porn' about them where people like to sneer and laugh at them and their culture.

I don't say this to make you feel guilty- and I am not sure if you have Irish Travellers in the US or Canada,  I just think its important to not perpetuate sneery laughing at an oppressed minority.

I had no idea. We do have Roma folks in the U.S. (some call themselves Gypsies, some don’t). I’m not familiar with Irish Travellers, though. I’ll check out the article. Thanks for enlightening me. Next time I’ll think before I post.
  • FWIW I don't fault the pictures that were "styles of the time" that carried over into attire that was "normal" (Think 80's big hair and poufy shoulders)..  Nor the Gypsie wedding styles where they all looked like they were at least enjoying themselves dressed up... It's the one that the nonverbals are screaming "OMG why am I having my picture taken in this" that I think "Amen Sista!"..

Re: The Pastel Dream! That was what my wedding looked like back in the late 70's. My 6 BM each chose a different pastel color in the same floor length qiana knit sundresses. One BM surprised us with those same floppy hats that are pictures. She got them at the sewing supply store for $1 each. Our first dance was 'Color My World,' by Chicago. I did like a theme. The men wore brown tuxes with ruffley shirts and ties to match their partners dresses. We had even numbers. Sometimes, I cringe when I look at my wedding album. Looking at my wedding pictures reminds me not to ridicule some of the wedding trends I've read about on the TK boards.

My cousin's wedding was like the rainbow bright wedding, early 80's. The long 'jewel tone' bm dresses had long puffy bishop sleeves and matching bouquets of silk flowers. My daughter was a flower girl in that wedding. She wore a long white Cinderella ball gown with a bright pink sash. I thought that wedding looked tacky. In retrospect, it was not worse than mine.

I was a flower girl in my aunt's wedding which would have been very late '70s ('78 or '79).  The flower girls and bridesmaids were in pastel peach.  I think the bridesmaids wore matching peach floppy hats.  One of the BMs was my mom.

My aunt even wore one of those white floppy hats with her wedding dress!  For reference, it was a more casual, simpler lines style dress.  So the hat wasn't too casual for it.

Dated, yes.  But I love those pictures and my mom and aunt look beautiful!  Though I'm sure I'm just a wee bit biased, lol.
