Wedding Woes

Tuesday. Right?

Drama in the Charmed household.  My parents do a lot for all three of their kids - but really go above and beyond for my bro.  He lives the closest to them at only 3ish hrs away.  As a result my parents drive there a lot on weekends,
Probably 2 of the 4 in a month.  They do babysit a lot.  My bro/SIL have a farm and do that and market stuff on weekends.  It’s hard to do stuff around the farm with a 2.5 and 1 year old.

My mom told me they were going to be at my bro’s this weekend if I wanted to go too? I was like “cool!  I’m only 1.5 hrs away from them actually.  H and I are going to a (haunted) mineral springs hotel and spa.  You should join us!” I had this planned for 2+ months.

Much to my surprise, they took me up on it!  They said it looked neat and my dad was looking forward to a mineral bath.

Well, my mom told my brother the plans after booking a room. They were going to babysit till the market was over at 1 and then head out around 2 to go to the hotel with us.  We had the mineral bath scheduled at 5.
My brother was like “Thanks for letting us know ahead of time, we’ll have to get a sitter to do some stuff around the farm.  We were hoping you’d be there till 6”.

I guess they wanted my parents to babysit all day?!? I’m sorry, but they’re at a point in their life where they’re finally able to enjoying it. They both work VERY hard!  My mom felt guilty so now they’re compromising and moving the mineral bath to 7 and staying with my brother till 5! But she got a real condescending text from my SIL “hey we thought you were coming in for the kids, but we can get a sitter and it’s not a big problem”. (Ummm then why write my mom that text?).  My parents were going to give up their morning and early afternoon for them, and now they have to pretty much be guilted to stay till 5.  She then blind copied me on the email to them with the new plans and my parents are even heading over for 2 or 3 hours on Sunday to help them out before heading home.  Why does my brother do this to them?

Re: Tuesday. Right?

  • If i were your parents I'd start to just not go over as often.   It's a shitty thing to look a gift horse in the mouth and get upset that people are using their weekend.

Is your brother the type to possibly take too much advantage of their goodwill?   Because something like this would leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Have a farm.   Do what you want with it.   But don't live your life under the presumption that your parents provide free childcare as a way that you can advance your livelihood.
  • Charmed - Your brother does it because your parents give in!  He knows he can get away with this kind of thing.  What does your brother do with the kids the other weekends when your parents aren't around?

My mom had her CAT scan results for her elbow and it was looking as good as the doctor was hoping for!  So no surgery!  She can start working on doing some small exercises at home and then PT will start in 2 more weeks.  She may never be able to fully straighten her arm again, but my mom is ok with that!

We had some crazy microburst storms roll through just around 5.  Huge trees downed and lots of electricity out.  Its days like last night that I am happy we moved into a neighborhood with underground wiring, nothing to pull down.  So our neighborhood was spared, though FB friends all around us were out of power.  Most has been restored already, thankfully for them!

I have an eye doctor appointment today, so I will get to leave work a tad bit early for that.  Not sure what's going on after that, but I'm pretty sure my eyes will be dialated, so probably not much!
  • I think they take turns farming and looking after the kids, @OliveOilsMom.  Or wait for nap time if they can both go down at the same time?  I guess they get a sitter every once And awhile.  They absolutely expect more from them because my parents really do bend over backwards.

Yay on your mom’s arm! Great news

Ugh Charmed I hate people like that! They definitely sound entitled and it sounds like your parents have been very generous toward them and thus they take advantage. God forbid your parents do something for themselves for once in addition to still helping them.

My best friend's sister is/was like that. Actually 2 of her sisters. It was ridiculous but the whole family enabled it so they never changed.
  • That's really messed up that they laid that guilt trip on your parents.

Crazy storms last night too and lots of rain today. Thankfully we have not lost power at home or work.
  • That would irk me so much @CharmedPam. Entitlement is gross.

I’m glad your mom’s arm is better than expected @OliveOilsMom!

Pretty much SSDD today. I have a friend coming over the next two days to study so I have to do some stuff around the house to get ready and meal plan a bit since she’s vegetarian. At some point today I want to go through my closet and get rid of things. I’m tired of looking at the same shirts I never wear all the time. I’m just really tired of clutter in general.

  • @CharmedPam I mean, if your parents do it regularly then I get where your bro would assume that they'd stay on Saturday but does that mean they should assume they always will? No.
Omg he totally guilted them into coming back :\

Still haven't heard from condo corp, so I'm gonna leave a voicemail shortly. The lady I typically speak to could be on vacation and not set up her email as such.
It's at the point where they'll have to send the money back to me because AC Company won't pull back the money.

  • Back back in the office and even though I was only off two days I feel like I have no idea what’s going on. But the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra played at lunch and our team went out to listen!

@charmedpam that’s super annoying. My sister does stuff like that; they asked my mom to watch my niece a few weekends ago because they were going out to dinner and to a boat ride happy hour. So it was going to be a later night for my mom. My sister initially said my mom had to be there by 5 so they could make dinner. So that’s what my moms plan was. Well sister texts at like noon asking where she was. Sister thought mom would just come early to hang out with niece so that her and husband could get things done before their night out. Uh, no. It doesn’t work like that. You can’t expect her to be there ALL DAY!
  • @CharmedPam, I hate to say it, but that seems to be the nature of entitlement.  Instead of people being grateful.  They become "expectant".  And then push for more, smh.  But I hope you and your parents have a great time at the haunted mineral springs and hotel!  Sounds fun and relaxing.

@OliveOilsMom, glad your mom's CAT scan came out well for her elbow!  Especially good news she won't need surgery.

We have more showings at noon today, though my H is handling them.  Hopefully, it will be as busy this Tues. as it was last Tues.  And not the almost complete failure that Sat. was.

I forgot to mention yesterday.  We did have one amazing turn of events over the weekend.  Actually on Fri.  And I can 100% thank Bigger Pockets (forum about real estate investing)!  We need a lot of flooring for the new duplexes.  We decided on waterproof luxury vinyl plank (LVP) clickable floating floor in a wood-look.  But the cheapest we could find for the quality we want was $2.69/sq. ft.  I happened to be cruising through the forums on BP and saw a post about LVP and another user looking for recommendations.  I had no idea but, apparently Sherwin Williams...the paint folks...have opened 160 flooring stores over the last year or so.  One of them is in my area.  My H and I went down on Friday.  Found exactly what we wanted for $2.00/sq. ft.!! Huge difference!  We'll be saving over $3K.

My stepbrother, who usually lives in CA, is in town for training this week.  He came over last night and we gave him the tour of our house and neighborhood.  Then we all went out for classic New Orleans poboys (sandwiches on French bread) and walked along a nearby bayou.  It was fun to catch up, but was a bit of a shorter night because we hadn't made definite plans, so it was more impromptu and started a little later.  But we'll all be going out again on Wed.  We're taking him to one of our favorite restaurants (The Palace Café) that's on the border of the French Quarter.  I assume we'll toodle around the FQ after that.

Ugh I hate entitled-grandparent-babysitting.  H and I had some pretty heated arguments over that back when the kids were babies and I was  SAHM/working two days a week...he thought it was crazy that my retired parents weren't automatically, happily watching the kids so I could work full-time.  Said that that's the way it was done "in his culture" (his default line whenever we fundamentally disagree on a big thing).  Like no.  My parents did this four times and have earned retirements to spend as they wish.
Good news about your mom;s scan @OliveOilsMom and your outing with your stepbrother sounds nice @short+sassy
SSDD around here...our storms were wild last night too.

Whoa, that's more like a "hutch wall", lol.  Though it's listed as a 3 bd/2ba with an additional "flex" room.  I assume there is a bathroom on each floor.  There are such big and cute backyards in your area.

Love the hardwood floors on the main level.  Really nice house, overall!  But, ugh...while you're imagining...re-do the stairway rails and stairway flooring anyway, lol.  They should have matched the stair flooring to the downstairs flooring.  Not the upstairs.  Makes the foyer so weird looking.  And I'm not even sure if it matches the upstairs either, lol.

MKD I was thinking that house would be a lot more expensive bc I feel like whenever I see houses in Canada the prices are way, way higher than here. That house/price could work in my metro area
  • @short+sassy. One of the best things about NOLA is the food! mmmm and I don’t even like seafood.

@MissKittyDanger, I’d be so pissed!  That’s a lot money to be out while you have to wait for them to fix it/give it back to you.

That's okay!  As it sounds like you know, we have other choices, lol.  Roast beef debris poboys are one of the most popular types of poboys out here.  My stepbro got one that was roast beef debris and sweet potato fries.  Mind you, sweet potato fries were not the side.  They were IN the poboy.

I've never had one, but you can also get French Fried poboys.  Those include just French fries, gravy, and mayo.  Sometimes cheese.  I've never had poutine either, but that poboy type reminds of how poutine has been described to me.

  • @short+sassy  it's actualy a 25min drive on highway from my current place - it's kind of a small town area.
For front door, we'd prob do same as we're currently planning for our mud room is get a mat fitted to the area. Cover everything and keeps the dirt, etc off.
Friggen hand rail just annoys me.

@kvruns don't get mistaken, there are much higher places. This is a small town and they can vary pretty good. Our place is suburbs of older area and it was 198K
Down the street from us can get up to $500K and that's minimum when looking at new builds and we don't talk about downtown.

@CharmedPam I am forever grateful for the fact I built savings prior to mat leave. It's better that I know I'll eventually get the money back - it's just a matter of time. Don't get me wrong, I'm still friggen pissed this happened and kicking myself for not asking for confirmation on the money sent. That's stupidity on my part that I will not do again

Yeah - maybe that's how it was done in their culture but in some of those cultures the parents lived with the children and the children didn't go out that often and when the parents aged so they COULDN'T live on their own their children and grandchildren give up their own social lives to care for them.

I teeter on this.   The ILs live close but I try to not rely on them for sitting.   That said we don't push for it, don't make it out for them to do this too often and they say, "This is why we're here!   Please ask!"

But if they said no we'd get the picture and would figure it out with a different sitter.

  • That's obnoxious, Charmed.
    Yay for the mama, Olive.

Worky, work.  Tomorrow is my day off.

We're dog-sitting for FIL this week.  She's a good dog, but reminds me why I don't want one full time.   She did close herself in our laundry room on Sunday night while we were at my parents and peed on the floor.  Thankfully, it's the best place in the house for her to do that since it has a drain and whatnot.

So glad the weather has settled and is much more pleasant.  DefConn and I have some running around to do tomorrow and maybe we'll go see a movie or something.  Or find a park to visit.  We'll see.  Maybe I'll drop the dog off to chill at her house for a few hours.  LOL ;)

Poboy is just the New Orleans name for a sub-style sandwich.  Pretty much any kind of sandwich served on French bread.  Though, it usually doesn't refer to a cold cuts type of sandwich.

Popular kinds of poboys are roast beef debris or fried shrimp.  Roast beef debris is bits and pieces of roast beef in a gravy.

Here is NOLA lingo.  Do you want your poboy "dressed"?  That means, do you want it with lettuce, tomato, and mayo.

The sandwich got it's name from way back in history when this was the typical kind of meal that anyone could afford.  Even a "poor boy"...eventually shortened to poboy.

My poutine reference was for a specific type of poboy called a French Fried poboy.  Which is a sandwich with French fries (in it), gravy, mayo, and often cheese.  That reminds me of how I've had poutine described to me; however, I've never had poutine or even that type of poboy.

    So I just looked it up ... is it like a pulled pork sandwich? {the beef one I mean}

I wouldn't really consider it similar to a poutine - mainly because a classic poutine is just fries, gravy and cheese curds. Google is being stupid, so googling "classic poutine" will give you best image.

There are many different kinds, so minus the bread you could get a pulled pork poutine, beef poutine, etc.
  • The entitled grandparent babysitting gets my ire up! I told DD I would babysit when I can (or offer) and she knows how I feel about taking advantage of grandparents. I do go up a lot but that is my choice. Most of the time I offer. There have been very few times she has asked us to babysit. She and SIL are also very appreciative when we do babysit. I figure right now, I am in good health and can enjoy the boys (and should). However, I have friends who have health issues and are running themselves ragged taking care of their grands.
I figured you did it out of love for the grand babies!  As do my parents. I talked to my dad and he said “we told them we would take care of them till 1.  When the market is over.  But that’s all we said”.  My mom was even like... those 2 boys take a lot outta you! Cute as can be - but yeah, kids have a lot of energy.  So i feel bad for them since they pretty much comprised at 9 am to 5 pm. I’m sure we’ll all have lunch though.

I'm sure financially they are running ragged - unless the grandkids are being brought stuff while grandparents watch them.
    {ex: still in diapers, so sending diapers for them}
  • Part of this thread made me actually ask my mum if she felt at any point I was taking advantage of her, etc. She told me no, but mainly because I ask before making plans and usually can figure out a back up, and I always offer to send stuff for BabyKitten {snacks, etc}
  • I don’t think it’s the asking that’s an issue (at least from what I see with my sis) but the expectation that the answer is always yes and the time fame is for however long you want.
Oh for sure. I would have been surprised if my mum said she did feel that way, but had to ask as an off hand thought.
We try to balance BabyKitten babysits it between my mum and MIL/sFIL so it's not always one sided

Okay, thanks!  Fries+gravy is unusual in the US, so I think of poutine when I hear that combo.  I didn't realize (or remember) that cheese curds were a major component also.

The texture of "roast beef debris" would be similar to pulled pork, but not the taste at all.  Pulled pork is usually mixed with a sweet BBQ sauce.  Roast beef debris isn't sweet.  The keep all the juices of the roast beef and it makes like a brown gravy sauce.

There is a restaurant near my house that has poutine as an appetizer...I've never seen it anywhere else on a menu...and I've been meaning to get a to-go order of it.  So I can finally try it!  I just looked it back up on their menu, but it seems like it's their own version of poutine.  Because...are you ready for the irony, lol...they put roast beef debris on their poutine!

Never mind (sigh).  If I'm going to try poutine, I'd rather try a more traditional version.  Plus, I don't care for roast beef debris.

  • @short+sassy  I cannot get past the "debris" part lmao! Well ... just means you have to come to Canada ;) Suggestion go to Quebec City or downtown Ottawa - both have great options. I live in Ottawa, but downtown has great places and you can have a beavertail {I believe in the states they're called elephant ears?}

Typically in poutine it's beef gravy, but my mum LOVES when turkey gravy is an option .... it's rare but we know the few places that do it ;)

Thanks to the East Coast ladies on here...I think first mentioned by @charlotte989875...I have now heard of the "Garbage Plates" of Rochester, NY.  Here is the definition of a Garbage Plate from RocWiki:

It is a disorganized combination of either cheeseburger, hamburger, Italian sausages, steak, chicken, white or red hots, a grilled cheese sandwich, fried fish, or eggs, served on top of one or two of the following: home fries, fries, beans, and mac salad. A plate is always made to order. Then, the plate is adorned with optional mustard, onions and Rochester's version of hot sauce. Some restaurants will charge for extra helpings of hot sauce, and the hot sauce varies widely in flavor and spiciness. A plate is usually served with a side of white bread and butter, though some restaurants charge extra for bread. It is said that the purpose of the bread is to soak up the grease left after you've eaten the garbage plate.

One of these days, I will need to take an extended culinary road trip.  Here are my wishful stops (these are all local dishes, not the restaurant names):

    --Hot Brown in Louisville, KY
    --Garbage Plate in Rochester, NY
    --Buffalo Wings in Buffalo, NY
    --Lobster Rolls in coastal Maine
--Poutine in Canada (I'll add in Ottowa specifically, thanks to you @MissKitty Danger)
