Tax Day WEDNESDAY

It is tax day.... kind of. Since they extended the deadline it isn't quite the same but it is April 15th.

Re: Tax Day WEDNESDAY

  • Well, my stimulus check came today, so that's sort of tax day like? Otherwise, SSDD here. It got cold (cold for us) overnight, and it was quite chilly this morning. I'm cuddled in my office with slippers and the space heater on.

Our fireplace needs to be looked at (it's gas starter, wood burning) before we use it. When we bought the house there was tons of ash, but it looked like it hadn't been used in a while. I thought we were close enough to spring that we should just put it off until the fall, but now I wish we'd done it sooner. I'm thinking of switching the whole thing to gas logs. Has anyone done that?
  • Ugh. I do not have good update. My friend's dad passed away yesterday from Covid. And pretty much the only thing I can do is just send food and flowers to her house. And it's awful. I hate this.
  • @MyNameIsNot - yay for a stimulus check!
    @climbingwife - I'm so sorry for your Friend's loss

  • @climbingwife I'm so sorry.
  • sorry to hear that @climbingwife
  • Oh no @climbingwife I'm so sorry.  That's awful.

    Happy meetaversary @MNNEBride

We haven't gotten our check.  The stimulus link is live, but I go to check my status and it tells me it can't find my payment status.  I double checked our 2018 filing, because I haven't gotten to 2019 yet, and we definitely were well, well below the AGI threshold. Not shocked, considering our gov't.  But how fucking annoying.

To add another layer of fuckery, they deducted pretty much everyone's benefits twice from Friday's check.  My check is only short by $100 or so, but I can't imagine what could have been taken out of people's checks who pay for higher priced benefits.

We finally put DefConn's desk in my office.  He's coming in more often to bother me.  LMAO

    SSDD for the most part.
  • Oh @climbingwife I’m so sorry! It really sucks you can’t be, physically, there for her right now.

I can’t even get to the site because it’s so busy. We also didn’t file 2019 yet so I’m guessing we’ll have a similar issue.
  • We also have an extended tax deadline - normally at end of April, now until June.
We already did our taxes though, since my work does them and they're efiled.

M and I have been watching "Umbrella Academy" It's weird, but in a good way? We just finished ep 7 of 10
Is anyone else watching? I'm not sure what we'll watch after, probably finish the PVR Dr Who
  • @climbingwife, so sorry to hear that.  It’s awful, and yeah, sucks that you can’t physically be there.
@charlotte989875 happy you have a yoga buddy!
@MissKittyDanger, your work does them?  That’s amazing! Like pull in all your tax work papers? Ours has an easy upload link to turbo tax but obviously just does the w2 calcs.

speaking of taxes, I went to an accountant on March 7th.  Dropped off my paperwork and he said he’d have it a week after.  It’s 4/15 and I call once a week and
his secretary says he’ll email me something. He never has and I’m getting frustrated!  WWYD? I have half a mind to pick up my folder and go elsewhere. My stuff is not complicated.  Well 2019 isn't. I need a 2018 redo.

I got my stimulus check but that doesn’t mean anything. Along with my surprise medical bills I also woke up with my furnace shutting down on me.  It was 57 and only blowing cold air.  Someone’s here now to look at it. $$$

How sad @climbingwife I'm sorry to hear- it's so hard not being able to do what you'd normally do.  This all sucks.
Our stimulus checks hit too.  We're just stowing them in savings, we don't want to touch them until the pandemic ends and we're both still gainfully employed :/

No! That sucks, hopefully it’s a small, easy fix.
  • I’m so sorry @climbingwife. *hugs*

No stimulus check here yet. I didn’t even know there was a website to check on your check status. I am infuriated that people receiving a physical check will be delayed so the Cheeto can have his name printed on them.

I think we’ll hear official word about shortened work weeks and layoffs today. Unofficially they were supposed to start next week. Every day is just so tense. Other than that, SSDD. I made a fantastic penne a la vodka with shrimp and it’s taking a lot of willpower not to just eat all of it at once. We’ll try to be responsible with the leftovers tonight. Lol.

  • @CharmedPam With what we do, we have to do taxes for some of our clients so our tax department offers to do ours and our spouse's taxes :) it saves us a lot of time lol I did turbo tax last year, which is fine but costs. Ours is free

I read that people who have already filed for both 2018 and 2019 are the ones most likely to get the stimulus money the soonest.  But, who knows.  I didn't get mine either, but I just filed for 2019 on Sat.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that @climbingwife.  This is such a hard time to not be able to comfort people who are hurting when this is when they often need the comfort of friends the most.  I hope your friend is okay.

@CharmedPam Think warm thoughts!  Hopefully it's a quick fix and your house is toasty warm later today!

Snow flurries here today, which is annoying.  I know that it is Canada and I should always expect more snow until May rolls around, but I'd just like some sunshine at this point and no more cold nights.  I took the heater out of my rabbit's pen last week, and I think they are a little pissed at me this week because of it.  I brought my one boy in last night to sit on the couch with us and he snuggled as tight as he could into my husband - it was adorable.

My dog is going stir crazy, so I think I will have to brace against the cold and take her for a walk later today, regardless of how I feel about the weather.  At least there will be less people out and about, so we'll probably have the streets to ourselves.

  • Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

@CharmedPam I hope your furnace is fixed soon, and it's not to much damage to your wallet! What sucky timing.

    @mrsconn23 that's so sweet.
  • @short+sassy Oh no!  Is your washing machine completely dead, or can it be fixed with a part?  I had the motor go on mine a few years ago, and just needed to replace the motor.  But what bad timing for it to go down!  Hopefully you don't have to resort to handwashing whole loads of laundry - shudder.

My H is pretty handy and has often been able to fix appliances at our rentals.  But, unfortunately, not this time.  Our house is a duplex and our next-door tenant usually runs that side as an AirBnB.  Of course, all his reservations through May have been cancelled.  We asked him if we could use the washer on that side, in the meantime.  He told us that was fine.  He stays there sometimes also so, for social distancing sake, we don't want that situation to go on for too long.  We won't be there when he is and we'll wear gloves when we are.  Still, we don't want to take advantage for too long, but it will at least buy us some extra time.

  • @climbingwife, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's dad.  It is extra sad times when we can't even comfort our friends and family.

@MyNameIsNot, it is oddly chilly for mid-April down here.  We put our heater on a little last night and this morning.  Alas, I don't know much about fireplaces or doing a conversion.  But if you all want something fairly cheap ($142) to get by until Fall, I highly recommend this wall room heater:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AHOA6M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

We have a rental that does not have any heat going to two of the bedrooms.  We put one of those in each room and crossed our fingers, lol.  That tenant went through most of the winter with them and said they were great.  She said they kept the whole room as warm as they wanted it with no problems.  You can also find electric baseboard heaters on Amazon that are even cheaper and I think they just plug into a socket.  It was something else we looked at and there were a lot good reviews, but I don't have personal experience.

@CharmedPam, speaking of heating, good luck with your service call!  I hope it's something cheap to fix.

I've had my own home problems.  Our washing machine died a couple days ago.  So now we need to figure that out.  Of course, it's never a good time.  But it really, really isn't, lol.  Especially considering that we usually buy used appliances and that is certainly more problematic right now.

Edited to add:  I forgot the update on my cruise.

I rebooked it for almost the exact same dates...except next year.  It was originally going to be leaving on May 10th.  My cruise next year leaves on May 9th, lol.

There were at least some silver linings.  My original cruise gift certificate included ONE item I could chose from their "Free for All" list of goodies.  But they were having a special that also applied to rebooking!  And now I got ALL the goodies on the list.  Free drinks, Free WIFI, free upgraded dining, and $50 toward EVERY shore excursion.

I was also given a bonus $75 in cruise credits to use on the ship.
I mean, I feel like a baby for complaining about lows in the 40's when people are in the snow! We'll be ok without the fireplace; I just like it, but I could turn the heat back on or get a blanket.

If you decide to go new on the washer, it might actually be a good time to get a deal. Lowe's and HD are sending coupons and deals all over the place. Hopefully they will run an appliance sale soon.

Glad it was resolved @CharmedPam@mrsconn23 that's so sweet (and I'm intrigued that Target by you sells bourbon!)
  • Climbing - I'm sorry for your loss.  It's so extra tough when you can't hug or even see people you want to provide comfort for.

MrsConn - That's so nice of all those people to help you that way!

Charmed - Glad it was a quick fix!

    MNNE - Happy Meetiversary!

We got our stimulus money today too.  We filed our Fed taxes in Feb, we are still waiting for our state tax return money to come in, but we didn't file that until COVID was ramping up here and the state was starting to shut down.  So our filing may just be sitting in a mail bin somewhere.  We have to pay to efile the state return, so I'm cheap and just print out the pages from Turbo Tax and mail them in.  We got our Fed money a while ago now.

For those that don't know, the stimulus money is supposed to just be a credit on your return for next year.  That is how it is written into the stimulus bill.  Recently, I saw something that said the stimulus money won't be treated as a credit to next year anymore.  But I don't know how that can be, if its written into the law that its just a credit for next year.  So just beware on this!!!

It's pretty cold in our house today - 60.  But we are trying to keep the heat off.  My hands are getting cold, so we might need to run a few cycles and then shut it back off!  DD is being pretty crazy today and I need strength to deal with her!  Overall, we have had more good days than bad, and with a 3 year old, we need to be thankful for the good days!

All our Super Targets have set up basically a spirits store inside of the actual store. It's usually at the front.  They even have a register set up inside it.
