Finally Friday

And I made it through the first full week of 2021!

Kinda sorta.  It’s only 9:20.  I’m leaving at noon to work from home, I have a furnace cleaning and tune up and also my countertop measuring happens.  Woot.  One step closer to being done.

Happy Friday everyone!

Re: Finally Friday

  • Yay for Friday!  I have 45 mins to flex today so hoping to leave work early to use that up.  I have a mani/pedi appointment tonight and so looking forward to it.  I had to postpone from last week and my acrylics are so grown out.

Not much planned for the weekend except further unpacking and settling into the house.  We need to pick up the ladder we ordered from Home Depot.  Hoping it will fit into our vehicle with the back seat down!

It's warm (25 degrees in January is nice) gray and cloudy here today. Hoping for some sunshine later.

  • M fell down the stairs while holding BK.
Both are fine - M has a badly bruised butt {upper butt area, basically just under where your undies waistband is} because he basically bumped down a good chunk of stairs.

How did BK come out unscathed? M knows first aid and actually reacts properly to things - so as soon as he felt his foot slip, he tucked BK into his chest and just let himself fall.
Definitely scared t.f out of everyone.

From hearing the first part to the end, I only had time to say "what the fuck" and when I got down, M was laying on the floor {so I immediately thought the worst} but he was just trying to make sure BK was ok. He had me take her and check her so he could catch his breath and get up. I made him stay there in case he was hurt.

Everyone is fine. M is barely working today because he cannot sit properly. So he's available for msgs, etc because that's on his phone but not working as he can't sit at his computer.

As I said to M, I prefer coffee to wake up.
  • 5 day work week down! I'm exhausted today. I've been staying up too late every night this week watching and reading news, so anxiety is up.

I'm really looking forward to the weekend, though. It's cold but clear here. Tomorrow we're going to work on building some shelves inside the closet in my office to help me get organized. Then maybe I'll make lasagna or something hearty for dinner. Sunday I'm hoping to get in a hike.
  • Glad they’re okay @MissKittyDanger
This was the longest week!  Really thankful for Friday and a low-key, errand-light, zero-plans weekend.
  • Update: M is icing his bum, says his hip is starting to be sore. Told him to take ibuprofen so it can help with pain as adrenaline drops.
He's half working - available for phone calls and messages he can do thru his phone, but cannot sit at his desk longer than 30 sec right now. Luckily he's wfh so he has this ability to even try.
  • Ouch!  So glad he knew to protect BK @MissKittyDanger!

  • oh man, MKD that sounds awful for M.  Glad BK is ok though!!!  It took a solid 4-5 weeks for me to feel mostly back to normal after I feel down the stairs in September.  I totally fee his pain.

@VarunaTT I hope you are doing ok.
@Jstump2 congrats on the house offer!

We finally got some new shelves to organize all of G's toys and books.  My sister was a Montessori toddler teacher for years is helping me set them up more like school does.  Kid LOVES books, but we're working on the "one at a time" concept, lol.  He is usually sitting surrounded by a pile of 20 or so at a time.

It's snowing and gorgeous here today.  Perfect and fluffy and feels a little bit like an escape from the current craziness.
  • @MissKittyDanger, oh no!  That sounds really scary.  I'm glad M and BK are okay, all things considered.  It sounds like M just needs a few days of rest to let the aches and bruising subside.

@Jstump2, I'm glad to hear you all liked the house.  Good luck with the offer!

@mrsconn23, I would love, love love to see him removed from office in these final days.  From what I understand, he would no longer be allowed to hold a federal office again if he is removed under these circumstances.  But it would also send the powerful message "your actions were so outrageous, we won't even allow you to be in power for another few days".

I took another step this morning on my continuing journey to get more online with my banking.  I finally signed up for direct deposit, lol.  Actually, it's only been with this company I haven't had direct deposit.  Long story short, it was actually a little easier to have an actual check because they bank with same bank I have my primary mortgage and HELOC with.  But I despise the particular bank involved and they have become increasingly difficult to deal with.  In another 1-2 months, I'll also (hopefully) be moving my HELOC to a different bank and then I will really hardly ever have to darken their doors again.

But, for now, I'll be going there after work for the last actual paycheck-check that I picked up today, lol.

Pretty boring day today and this weekend.  Just errands.  But that is okay.  As always, I am looking forward to resting, recharging, and sleeping in!

I've had a craving for fried chicken for a few days, so that is what I am picking up for lunch.  There is a delicious, cheap place that is walking distance to my house but they changed their hours and close at 5PM now, so they are already gone-pecans when I get home from work M-Th.  However, Fridays are my half days, so they can no longer deny me my chicken!  I also need to get some grocery shopping done, but will probably push that off until tomorrow.

I saw a meme that said something about how it was harder to get into Trader Joe's than the Capital.
Memes and distance are the only things getting me through this week. Sometimes it is hard being the only American in the room, like I have to somehow explain how/why something happened.

I think 45 will either scoot off to Russia or commit familicide, he has so many of the warning signs. I am somewhat obsessed with reading trash magazine articles about how the kushners are outcasts in Manhattan. Unfortunately, they will always have fans and I suspect I know too many than I would like to.

Edited to add: anyone heard from @VarunaTT? I skimmed the last few days' posts and don't remember seeing an update.
  • Thanks all!!
If all goes well we will have some work on our hands but we are excited

If  we get it one of the first things we would want to do is flooring.  I prefer a medium-dark wide plank wood look. My H wants me to consider vinyl or engineered hardwood because of the price. I'm just not sure if they will look "real" enough for me. Any experience @short+sassy?

@VarunaTT has been posting on FB. IDK if she's been on the board while at home.

We've never used engineered hardwood but, if I am remembering correctly, it is hardwood flooring on the top.  But is like a wood composite flooring underneath the surface.  It does look just like hardwood flooring, because it is.  However, I don't think it can be refinished/resurfaced in the future because the hardwood layer isn't deep enough.  But they should last for a minimum of 20 years and usually much longer, depending on a number of factors.  So I'm not sure if not being able to refinish it 20-40 years from now is much of a concern for most people.

I LOVE luxury vinyl plank flooring!  That is our "go to" flooring, anytime we need to replace one with our rentals.  With that said, if I was doing a "flip" in an upscale/higher end neighborhood, I would go with hardwoods because that's what is expected and will be what most of my comps for the property would have.

This is why I like luxury vinyl plank (LVP).  You have to look at it closely or touch it, to tell it isn't a hardwood floor.  It's extremely durable and, if a section/piece does get damaged, you can easily replace it out.  Even the cheaper, lower quality ones are pretty water resistant.  But you can also spend just a little bit more and buy ones that are water proof.  This type of flooring is also faster and easier to install then just about anything else, which usually means it is cheaper to install.

There is also wood-look tile that looks amazing and just like hardwoods.  It even comes in long sections like wood does (so does the LVP).  We used this for one of our rentals in the days before LVP was more common.  It is often even cheaper than LVP.  BUT the installation is a lot more time consuming because it is tile.

Something else that is fun about wood-look LVP or tile is you can put them in "wet" rooms, where you would normally NEVER put hardwoods.  Like the kitchen and bathroom.

Here is a pic of LVP flooring we put in our most recent reno.  As you can see through the doorway, we extended that same flooring through the kitchen:

This is the wood-look tile I was talking about that we did in our first renovation.  And this is a recent pic.  We installed it over 5 years ago and this is after two tenants, still looking exactly the way it did when we first installed it:

Edited to add:  Both of those floors also have texture and grooves, just like wood, to help augment the "wood look".

We did an engineered bamboo hardwood in our second floor this year. I’m like you in I wanted it to feel real solid. It’s really pretty good, better than I thought!

  • Really hope M is okay @MissKittyDanger! That’s scary!

Oh no MKD!  I'm glad it's only some bruising, but how scary.

Agreed Charlotte, is the insurrection still happening or what?  Also, it would be nice to see Congress impeach and convict him before Jan 20th just for the sheer fact he can no longer run for office.  Also if they keep him locked out of social media, then his political influence will definitely be muted. I truly think he's gonna be in court for the rest of his life.  So, he just really needs to be hemmed up in all the ways.  Clearly his cabinet would rather run away than invoke the 25th.

He just released a statement that he won't be at the inauguration. LOLz, like he was still invited.  I keep thinking about the 'club' that all past presidents seem to have with each other.  It made me feel some sort of way for a second, but making him and his family not wanted in any corner of the universe should be the mission for every reasonable person in this country.  I saw somewhere that he was going to try to jet off to Scotland and they are all, "Ummm, nah fuck off. (except in the creative way the Scots have to curse people out)"

Anyway, our bubble friends are coming for the Colts game tomorrow.  Sunday I'm going to work a little OT and then I think we'll watch more football.  Low-key weekend after this week feels like the best plan.

I have to think of some bday ideas for me to give to DH (our bdays are this month, 3 days apart).  I told him I already have ideas for him and he got all "I have no idea what to get you!!!"
I’m also petty AF and appreciate that neither Scotland nor Mar-a-Lago will let him stay permanently. Actions have consequences. Well sometimes.

    Also, Go Bills!!
  • And I believe he legally can't stay at Mar-a-Lago for more than something like 2 weeks?  So he's going to have to find a new place to have him.

Yup and from what I read the town has already sent a letter from their lawyers reminding him of that agreement.

Y'all are going to kill us.  We know it.  I'm just gonna enjoy some drinks and make home made pizzas.

To remain a club, it cannot be someone's residence.  Something about ordinances or whatever.  So, he has to go back to NY and they really want his ass as their guest of the state.
  • Thanks @short+sassy! We actually used the tile-looking wood in our current bathroom (greyed out look). It did turn out great but I'm not sure if I would love it for the whole house, especially since we are the ones that are going to install it. Lol. I will have to take a look at the luxury vinyl that's currently out. Our house now has vinyl wood-look in the kitchen but it is cheap and you can tell so that kind of makes me bias I think. Ideally I would like the same floor to flow between the kitchen and living room so the waterproof aspect is a good point!

We haven’t had this much optimism in Buffalo since the mid-90s so I’m not jinxing anything.
