My excitement for the week.  I just ordered a savory boudin-filled king cake and a cheesecake-filled king cake from a local bakery to pick up on Saturday.  Savory king cakes are unusual but, ever since we discovered this bakery's boudin-filled one a few years ago, it's become a Mardi Gras tradition for me and my H.  Boudin is a type of Cajun sausage, though it is only slightly spicy.

This will be a 4-day weekend for me and I'm already looking forward to luxuriating on boudin king cake for breakfast, lol.  Funny enough, not because of President's Day.  That is not a holiday at my work.  But Mardi Gras is a work holiday and that is this coming Tues.  I'm taking a vacation day on Monday.

NOLA is coming down harder than I expected on restrictions, though I don't disagree.  They have already totally closed down bars until after MG.  They are also totally closing three streets (including Bourbon St.) to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Fri.-Tues. from 7PM-3AM.  There are a lot of understandable exceptions for pedestrian traffic.  But the hope is these restrictions will deter people from entering those areas to loiter around.

Re: Wednesday

  • Omg the cat video?!? Lol! “I assure you, I’m live. I’m not a cat”. 😂 A savory cake? I must try that @short+sassy So I’m working from home today, waiting on the plumber. The window is 8-12. He said it was going to be an all day project (8 hours!) and I was reeeeeally hoping it was more on the 8 a.m. side but alas, it’s 9:30 and no sign of them yet.

  • I got home yesterday afternoon from Chicago. OMG so cold there and here. My car is an absolute mess from driving through the yuck from the snow. I pretty much did nothing but unpack and a load of laundry. Today I did workout and am doing more laundry. I brought back a toy storage unit that I had bought for DD when the boys were small. She says it is no longer functional for them so I just listed it on marketplace. I'm sure it will sell quickly. It is one of those things with open shelves and colorful wooden bins. She has very specific ideas of how she wants things to look and this doesn't fit. That's fine. I need to go get Valentine's cards for the boys (always fun to get mail) and birthday card and gift for a friend. We normally do lunch but that won't happen thank you Covid. Her birthday last year was the last time we were able to go out for lunch.

Interesting about your comments on Protestant churches because I know our church (in general) has been addressing racism and inequality.
  • @missJeanLouise I am obsessed with my Apple Watch. Do I even work out if it’s not recorded? Lol. I do also love my food processor but on a daily basis the watch has definitely been the thing I’ve consistently used.

I was at work forever last night (well, until 10 pm). We have a really big audit coming next month and we haven’t had time to work on it with all of the usual day to day clinic stuff. So I was able to squeeze out some OT and get a ton done without anyone interrupting me. Otherwise SSDD. I’m hoping I get to complete more stuff today. I’m supposed to hike with FSIL A tonight where we’ll talk out what happened over the weekend. I’m going to be brutally honest with her about some stuff. And tbh I hope she does feel guilty a little bit. We’ll see.

  • @missJeanLouise when is your birthday?  Me and another old school Knottie both share February 26.  @ReturnOfKuus doesn't post here anymore, but we still wish each other HBD on FB.
  • @short+sassy I don't think they deliver the boudin and it makes me so very sad.  I kind of understand why; it's probably harder to ship cooked meat than a dessert?  Anyway, that sounds amazing and dammit, I've visiting NOLA again at some point and stuffing myself.
  • ei - yay for poop!  LOL!  Since becoming a mom, I've never talked about poop so much!

S+S - That king cake sounds yummy!  I usually get Fastnauts from a local bakery on Fat Tuesday, but its a longer ride to get there, since its close to my office, but not my house.  Still debating, if I will make the journey!

I went on a Target run last night to finish up some Valentine's Day shopping, all for DDs teacher.  I've had DD and H done for a few weeks now.

H got bit again last night by some mysterious bug.  I am fine.  We had replaced our pillows and see nothing on the mattress.  He was in the attic again this weekend and digging in the fiberglass insulation when he dropped screws.  So I'm wondering if its actually fiberglass contact dermititis.  But would that show up a few days later?  I am trying to count back the weekends to see if the other bites correlate with the first time he went up in the attic.  We are planning to deep clean the bedroom today, moving all the furniture.
  • Kids are remote today thru Fri and then off Mon & Tues.   If snow doesn't impede the days then they'll see their teachers a whopping THREE TIMES in February.  Yesterday was a piss poor call to close.  It wasn't supposed to start until 10 and be slow all day with accumulations of 1-3".  We got....a dusting.

I need to get the ingredients together to make a king cake.  I don't know where the babies I bought last year went and it's going to annoy me if I have to go buy more so I can make the kids feel happy about it but oh well.

  • I have either cramps or my stomach is disagreeing with food I ate.
I rarely get cramps, so to me they feel the same. :(

I'm already starting to plan BK's bday. I'm debating on a colour theme. She's still into the Wiggles but also Frozen .... idk. Maybe I just won't have a theme? It's hard to say what will happen by then anyways.
BK isn't big into sweet foods, but I may do donuts that spell out "Happy Birthday" still. That way we can adjust the flavours.

We're back to fully working in office on Tuesday :) I'm gonna miss having an office when I was working there but at least I won't feel like I have to go back and forth for things. My desk is out front, and most of the stuff I use is there. I bring basics to the office, but still.
  • It's 65 degrees outside! I tried to take my last meeting out on the deck, but my wifi wasn't having it. I'm trying to get work stuff wrapped up so I can dip out at 4 and just be outside.

Nothing else super interesting today. I'm debating whether to make a fancy dinner or just have charchuterie on Sunday for Valentine's. We don't do gifts or make a big deal out of it, but we usually do dinner together. It's supposed to get cold again this weekend (maybe even snow). So maybe I can bake something.

    Have they convicted trump yet?
  • Welp, DefConn's on a 5.5 day weekend because I just picked him up to quarantine.  Again.  At least I got called on my lunch break this time.

I told DH that's the only silver lining to the school closings - at least they're less likely to be forced to quarantine.

Oh no!  I'm sorry for the bad intel.  They have info all over their site about delivery via FedEx, so I just assumed it was all of their bakery stuff.

Sometime, someday...travel will be safe again and I highly encourage a "food eating, cocktail drinking" NOLA trip!  Lol.

Congrats on taking on some new responsibilities without it being too taxing.  In regards to some of the "seasoned" paralegals, I had a coworker like that at a previous job and it was really insulting.  I had substantially more admin/project support experience than she did.  But she had worked at the company for 18 months longer than me and had a higher title.  She would micro-manage me to the nth degree all the time.

For example, I ordered office supplies and the coffee supplies for our office of 15 people about once a month, $150-$300 (each) orders.  Not much money for a company, but she insisted on reviewing those orders before I placed them.  At the previous company I had worked at, I ordered office supplies on a weekly basis for 200 people, plus our satellite office of 20 people in OH.  No one felt the need to look over my shoulder there!

And to be petty a little further, lol.  She spent about 60 minutes/month doing that.  Which cost the company about $400/year in her labor.  Just so she could every once in a great while tell me to only order one box of pens instead of two, because that should be enough to get us through to the next month.  It was so ridiculous.

One 'silver' lining of COVID I was talking to my boss about was how this has pushed "perfect attendance" for schools and work to the wayside.  I never paid much attention to it, but I know there were big rewards given out for perfect attendance at work.  My boss was all, "Yeah, I hope it stays gone because people definitely came to work sick."

And holy hell, I used to get nastygrams from school if DefConn missed 'too many' days (he had strep twice in one semester and missed, like, 5 days of school total from that and maybe one more 'just because').  Also, I got NO pushback when I asked for his work when we went to DH's grandma's funeral last month.  I've been told he'd just have to 'make it up' when we got back in the past (which, for a kid that has dyslexia, is akin to burying him).

It's crazy!  The weather has been so nice the last couple weeks.  Sunny.  Highs in the mid-60s to low 70s (72 right now).  So I think we're heading into spring time weather and the colder days are behind us.

Nope!  Major temperature drop starting tonight and lots of rain for days.  But you Knotties keep me grounded and counting my blessings, lol.  It might drop below freezing, but probably won't.

He's only missing 1.5 days of school this time because they're closed Fri and Mon.  He can return Tuesday since that's 10 days (yes, his exposure happened before his first quarantine).

His principal said they could come back tomorrow with a rapid test negative that is done tomorrow, but that seems like a lot of work for what would amount to a half day tomorrow.  If he was going to be out longer and/or they were in school the whole time, I'd consider it.
    That's great news!

We had no school last Mon for snow and they cancelled Tuesday but it had stopped Monday night!  The no school Tuesday could have been a delay.

Monday of this week we had a delay and yesterday no school so they're now attending remote for the day.

As a life long New Englander I find it to be really poor management to cancel school because you see a flake or heard one could exist.  It snows here.  And we shouldn't drive in blizzards but there's a line that needs to be drawn as we jump into too cautious for our own good.
Our district is extremely hardcore about going to school, on time, in inclement weather.  It has to be extremely severe for them to call a delay, much less close school.  Our old district often called it based on the forecast.  We probably had over a dozen delays each winter and missed at least 2 days, and usually more.   Our superintendent is very conservative.

I'm even for delays/canceling when it IS snowing.  But yesterday it wasn't even supposed to start until 10 and be super light.  And the new mandate is that snow days are remote days.  As a result, we found out at 6 PM on MONDAY before the snow was even tap dancing near the state that we had no school.

This isn't a "When I was your age we walked up hill both ways," but I am peeved that my kids are getting the VERY fuzzy end of the lollipop right now.
  • @ILoveBeachMusic I'm sure you'll sell it fast, that stuff always seems to go quick. My neighbor gave me one bc she got tired of seeing the content in the bins. Unfortunately (for me) it was an extra wide one and was too big for my space. Luckily I gave it to another neighbor so it still went to a good home
  • @VarunaTT not till next month (3/13) but DH has been pestering me because sometimes getting something here takes a lot longer than expected. Honestly, last year I think he forgot about my birthday so him being so on top of things is unusual. Normally I would want to go/do something but that's not really an option so idk what to tell the dude.

Yep already pending pick up with someone else wanting it if it falls through. Kids equipment always seems to go pretty quickly.
  • I've been pretty busy with work this week, in part catching up on projects I pushed to the side the past couple of weeks when I was stuck in meetings all day. On the plus side being busy means not snacking as much. I've gotten into a really bad snacking habit with yummy stuff I keep finding at Aldi. Need to stop myself from going!

A cookie shop recently opened up and while I wasn't a fan of the ones we tried on opening day I see they have a nutella filled one this week. I might have to treat myself to a cookie and call it my valentine to myself.
