MONDAY after Mother's Day

Re: MONDAY after Mother's Day

  • My general rants.  Obviously vaccines are working.  In the relatively short time we have had them, cases and hospitalizations have dropped so much that even in the stricter states, things have been opening up a lot.  And that is with only about one third of the country being fully vaccinated.

And for all the people who don't think masks do anything.  I read an amazing stat earlier today.

In the 2019-2020 flu season, there were 38 million cases of the flu.  In the 2020-2021 flu season, the flu was almost non-existent.  Less then 3,000 cases.

Maybe COVID particles are smaller then flu particles, so that isn't a totally fair comparison.  And I know there were other factors involved, in addition to people wearing masks.  But still.  No sane person can look at a stat like that and seriously say that mask wearing did not help keep COVID infection rates down.
Yet, I've seen several articles and experts that WILL NOT SAY that it was masks that caused the major drop in flu rates.  If not that, then what? Not ALL schools stayed closed (we've been full time in person since July last year) and yes social distancing helped, but any expressed particles can travel more than 6 feet (in some cases A LOT more) when unmasked. Masks keep a lot of that contained to your person.  Also, I don't think we had a single case that originated in our schools due to masking and social distancing.  Furthermore, the hand-washing and hand-sanitizer rhetoric fell away pretty early on.

I wish masking hadn't been politicized and made this weird xenophobic thing. We could have actually learned from the cultures in the far east that mask often, and especially if they have any symptoms of illness. It's not a perfect solution, but people are being verbally assaulted for wearing masks still (happened to my sister last week).
  • I read a headline (thus, entire article in my eyes) that Fauci said that masks may be a permanent thing during flu season going forward. We may never see it go away.

I was thinking this is just going to be smart.   Aren't masks frequently worn in other countries in Asia when there is a concern of illness?  It's here in the US that they seemed to be reserved for medical personnel only.

I told Chiquita that I do not intend to get rid of our masks especially since she and her brother will be bringing home the germs.
  • @banana468, I think you are being totally reasonable to request outdoors only since your children are not going to be vaccinated. If people have problems with too bad. You have to think about the health of your kids.

I too think masks should be a permanent part of our culture during the flu season. Obviously they work in other countries. Stupid political rhetoric.

Mother's Day was pretty low key. Church then watching TV with DS2. Weather was awful all day. We did yummy carry out from a favorite place. Chocolate chip bread pudding for dessert doused with Woodford reserve. Need I say more?

I was up way too early this morning thanks to H snoring up a storm. We met with a bathroom designer. I'm anxious to see what she comes up with for our master bath.

I'm sold on masks!  Even when COVID is (hopefully) in the distant past, I'm going to wear masks during the height of flu season when I'm in public and indoors.  I always get the flu shot, but I never feel confident with them because it's a "guess" from the previous year as to which strain of flu will be more prevalent.

I'm also planning to wear them for air travel.  Pre-pandemic, it seemed a third of the time that if I traveled by air, I would develop a minor cold after I got home.  Even though I normally have a strong immune system.  I'd considered wearing a mask for air travel a few times before the pandemic, just never did.  I was worried I would scare people and they'd think I was traveling sick.  But now it's more normalized and it was stupid to think like that anyway, lol.

I'm finally going on my European cruise in April 2022.  At least I hope, lol.  I don't know what the mask situation will be at that time, but I'm planning to wear a mask in the public, indoor areas even if it isn't required.  Other diseases, not just COVID, have occasionally spread through cruise ships.

I am so guilty of this also, lol.

Many a conversation with my H has started like, "Wow, did you hear about XYZ?  I think (this).  I mean, I didn't read the article, but the headline said XYZ."

In light of the DD on the other thread I'd love a reality check from y'all:

With the scenario of an approaching visit from a group that is potentially not vaccinated, do you think DH and I are off base saying that we will need to limit any gatherings to those that can be outside?   I have anxiety that people will get stompy but I also welcome the reality check.
Nope. I’m still wary about inside, even if we’re all vaccinated. You’re perfectly in line to expect that if people are refusing to be vaccinated that you’ll only see them outside. That’s what I would be doing.

omg @charlotte989875 those tiny little shoes!

@Jen4948 that's awesome you were able to get back to playing in person again
  • @banana468 I fully am with you on not socializing inside with unvaccinated people. I’d do it, but I wouldn’t expose your kids who can’t get vaccinated to selfish people who can and won’t. I’d honestly really struggle seeing them at all.

And luckily MIL and FIL are vaccinated and they'll stay with them.
But exposing DH and me to unvaccinated while probably fine does not mean that there isn't that slight chance that our kids can be affected.

We have a trip planned shortly after their visit and I'm not inclined to play roulette with my kids' health for the sake of feelings ever but especially when we have had this planned for nearly two years.

And the concept that the kids are likely OK is
    1) False.  The incidence of hospitalized kids with Covid is growing.
    2) Kids that survive have numerous issues related to Covid's effects.
    3) The more you expose non vaccinated people to each other and the virus spreads the more variants you get.

Nice quiet weekend. I visited my parents and played mahjong with my mom. We play every weekend but after the pandemic started we switched from my mom's tile set to playing online. This weekend, for the first time since the pandemic started, we went back to the tile set and played Siamese mahjong (two players). I was missing that.

Working at a new job today.

    SIB:

Did you get a new f/t job or is this a new gig job?  I remember you had an interview for a perm. job a little while ago, so I'm hoping!
