Re: Freedom Thursday

  • @short+sassy we need a new roof. Our house is not that big. Everyone is quoting us $20-40k. It’s outrageous. They could complete the work in 2-3 days with a crew of 3. Roofing around here is absolutely insane. Actually anything trade related is insane. Like when they wanted $1200 to resurface the tub. Excuse me, what?

Ouch!  That is a tough pill to swallow.  HCOL areas can get you coming and going like that.  Housing being more expensive is the obvious one.  But then businesses need to pay employees more.  Their own offices and stores that they rent or own are more expensive.  So products and services are more expensive.

Our "rough" idea of how much patching should be actually came from them, lol.  On the two duplexes we were reno'ing at the same time, one of them needed a new roof and one of them needed just patching and vent work.  But this was in "normal" times.

The patching job was $1,375.  So the quotes today that were well more than double that was not what we were expecting.

The one that currently needs a new roof is a smaller house, about 1200 sq. ft.  The duplex that needed a new roof a couple years ago is 2200 sq. ft. and that roof was around $12K.

For that duplex, we paid a little extra for shingles that can withstand 135MPH winds.  We didn't lose even one shingle from that house from Ida but then, at least in NOLA, the worst gusts didn't exceed 90MPH.
