What a life for this to be a 'problem'.

Dear Prudence,

This may be the smallest, least consequential question you’ve ever received, but I honestly have no idea what to do. I live in a four-unit apartment building. Garbage pickup is Thursday. On Wednesday, gardeners hired by the landlords come and do various tasks and take the garbage bins out to the curb. We, the residents, have a rotating schedule to bring the garbage bins back in. Today was my day. But for some reason, the workers were here today and brought the bins back in. Do I just take this as a win, as in: “This was my task and the task is completed, so I’m done.” Or should I confess to my fellow tenants: “It was my week, but I didn’t actually do anything, so I’ll do it next week.”

  • I fucking cannot with this.
  • I fucking cannot with this.
Yep. This person exhausts me because I know exactly who they are and I just cannot with their brand.
  • Be kind - tell everyone you'll do it next week.

Also, my office is a mess.  Please come over and clean it with your new free time to write emails and not pick up the garbage.

At first ai thought this was going to go as my own garbage/landscaping problem.

garbage day was Wednesday and i put it out on the curb, but because my driveway is narrow, I do the grassy part not the driveway part.  My hired landscapers never moved the bins and just mowed around them! Leaving a patchy part on my curb.
now, that’s a real problem worth writing Prudie too.  Not this head tilt.

  • Take the win, LW.  It will cause far more problems to try and upset the schedule that seems to be working fine.  And next week, the neighbor to your left might be the lucky one and the landscapers bring the cans back in for them.

I'm more curious how four households keep track of whose turn it is.  It's also weird to me that each unit doesn't have it's own set of garbage cans.  At least that's how it works where I live.

Public humiliation for shirking your duties is the only answer to this. I hope your apartment complex has a pillory you can use.
LW should just start building a cross in a common area of their apartment and get a head start on the crucifixion they're going to get when their neighbors find out about their sin.
I'm going to start whistling "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" now.
  • I think the next time the week falls on you, just leave a note next to it:

    “dearest gardners,
please leave garbage cans where they are.  It is MY job to bring them in. You hear? My job. You don’t get to take that away from me!
