Wedding Woes

Wednesday

Iowa is trying to ban gay marriage again and that what my feeds are being bombarded with this morning. I miss living in Iowa for a lot of reasons, but since Covid Kimmy took over as governor i have never been more thankful to live in the poorly mismanaged - almost bankrupt - tax you for fucking everything state of Illinois. To be fair, i lived most of that time in a progressive bubble near a major university, but holy shit it's gross.

I'm bloated and crabby today but looking forward to hot yoga tonight and snow on Friday!

  • Ugh. I will never understand these fucking hateful people that want to force their beliefs on others. It makes me so angry.

Had a snow day yesterday. We ended up with 8". Cleaned off the cars and helped shovel and man, am I feeling it today.

Starting tonight, it's supposed to rain until Saturday - possibly another snowstorm Saturday night. What sucks is that we're going to a concert in BK Friday night and staying over, and I was really hoping we'd have good weather for it.  Meh.

Gross, @Casadena.  I hope that doesn’t pass.  Sometimes I really wonder if we’re in 2023? At least Lightfoot lost her re-election ballot! Yay.  Now we’ll get a whole new form of crookedness.  But lets hope it’s less crooked.
8” @climbingsingle, that’s bonkers.  I hate finding the shovel muscles the next day. They always show up.  I have a snow thrower for the most part, but there’s some nooks and crannies that need shoveling.

I’m starting to see dark undereye circles. I think i’m getting good sleep (thank you ambien), hydration is good - not great - I’ll focus on REALLY drinking my two water mugs, but I’m not a heavy drinker in general.
I sat down and looked at all my vacations and time off in 2023 vs my accrued time.  If I can get away with working from home two days while on “vacation” (one is for a concert that happens to fall on a Thursday but I’m not doing anything on the Friday!) AND I still booked off 2 weeks for my cruise in December in the whole picture... i have 4 days to play with.  Well, 4 days and 2 hours.  Lol.  That’s not a whole lot.
Edit; not a whole lot for ME because I’m in a travel group and 1/2 our roadtrips aren’t even spoken for yet!

  • Work is beyond busy. Someone (who doesn’t report to me) is supposed to be leading a time sensitive project and they’re majorly drippy the ball and I’m trying real hard not to be the one who picks it up. I just talked to his manager (my peer) and she’s on it but I hate this.

I can’t wait for the weekend.

Ugh I hate a lot of parts of our country.  Enjoy the hot yoga later though @Casadena.  Meant to ask you how your little guy's lack-of-sleep testing went (for him and for you)?

Lots of work bs still stewing.  Trying to focus on the positives right now.  Like summer concerts. Just purchased last night - I'm seeing Pink (do I have to write it P!NK?) who I love live and haven't seen since the pandemic, along with Brandi Carlile who I did see post-pandemic and I'm excited to see again.  It's not until August but I'm excited.
Of course you do.  Why did you even ask?
    :)
She’ll be awesome though! And Brandi, girl! You got two good ones.

  • I'm jealous @ei34!  I looked for tickets and between the cost and the hotel it was a bit steeper than I wanted.  I was thinking it would be a cool show to take Chiquita too as well but instead I think I'll show her P!NK's documentary.

I do have my annual DMB tickets but I'm also stalking to see if the Foo Fighters may hit Boston or NYC not in a festival.  I've kind of settled into the concept that a full day festival isn't my jam (pun intended) but so much of what they're doing so far is headlining multi day events.
  • @ei34 I saw Pink a few years ago and it was such a great concert!
  • @Casadena, that sounds like something Louisiana will try.  Our current governor is a Democrat, though a pretty conservative one, so maybe not yet.  For now, they'll stick to their usual treating women like sub-human beings.

Back when SCOTUS first made their ruling about same sex marriage, we had a Republican governor.  He spent millions of state dollars waging a grass roots rebellion that Louisiana could ignore the SCOTUS ruling.  I forget what his grounds were for why it wasn't a "valid" ruling.  If I'm remembering correctly, the state still wouldn't allow same sex marriages.  A Federal judge had to smack him back down.

Normally, I'd say that's another good reason to move away from Louisiana.  But FL is no improvement in that respect.  To put it mildly!

Busy day for my H.  We have our first rental showings between 11am-noon today.  It's a much higher price point than any previous rental we have done.  I wasn't completely bombarded with responses like I usually am.  Which is both good and bad, lol.  But it also seemed like the responses I received were better quality.  By that, I mean people who were more engaged and seemed to have read the ad.

Supposedly, two different people who each have a Section 8 voucher are going to come with their deposit in hand and their voucher ready to sign.  I'll believe that when I see it, but at least it bodes well.

I cannot even tell you all how much I strongly prefer a Section 8 tenant.  The first tenant I had for this unit was on S8 and they were fantastic.  They lived there for 4 years.  S8 paid 100% of their rent, so that was never an issue.  I am fresh off an eviction at another property and the previous tenants for this one that couldn't pay their rent, both happening in January.  I need a breather from that!  Plus, two of the S8 tenants I had were in the two buildings I sold last month.  That was a big drop in my S8 auto-deposit this month.

Then my H has to go this afternoon to the duplex we are selling and be there for a second showing for the same potential buyer.

  • @ei34 I saw P!NK years ago and she did a great show :D I wish she'd do my city - living in Canada's capital sometimes sucks but we're getting more shows recently.

@Casadena urg awful! Did you hear what TN is trying to do? Like wtf ....
  • Lord help me. BK is becoming very independent and as much as we love that for her, trying to explain that sometimes help is okay and you're able to ask if you're struggling.
Like even putting on her backpack, me holding the strap so she can get her arm in easier is not something to be mad about.

Also this morning she's like "RRRR I'm a zombie"
Me; how do you know about zombies?
    BK: I'm 4
Me: Oh okay, that answers that ...

There's an Eggo waffles commercial that is so funny and adorable, it makes my H and I laugh no matter how many times we've seen it.

The mom is at a kitchen island with Eggo Waffles.  A little girl, dressed like a dinosaur and about 4 or 5, comes up to get a bite of waffles.  Her mother asks her why she isn't wearing pants.

The little girl says with a stern, gruff voice and expression, "Because I'm a dinosaur!"  She takes the bite of waffle.  Then raises her hands in a "claw" pose.

I'm with you on that!  I live within a couple blocks of a huge one, but haven't gone to it in over 10 years.

It started becoming too long of a day for me, while at the same time becoming less enjoyable.  They kept raising the prices, while the festival kept getting more crowded.  The food and drink lines have turned into 60-90 minute waits.

Omg I've never seen that but that is BK right now.
Like dinos don't wear pants. LMAO

It's the logic answers that just kill us!

Like I came home and BK wasn't wearing pants yesterday.
    Me: where are your pants?
    BK: they're wet
Me: like did you pee or did you roll in snow?
BK: Rolled in snow. Now no pants.

This is me with the current Les Mis tour.  I'd love to take the kids but the closest they're getting to us is Washington DC.  Tickets are one thing but throwing in a hotel room for a night and either amtrak tickets (definitely my favorite way to get to DC) or even driving, and it's suddenly cost prohibitive.  No fun.

It's been yearsss since I've seen pink in concert, I'm really excited.  My DDs like her too, but I didn't consider them when buying tix.  It's a mommy's night out which will involve a lot of (overpriced) wine, my parents already said the kids could sleep over that night :)
  • Yeah - I'm lucky that NYC and Boston are driveable but for a late night I would like to be in a bed sooner rather than later.  And looking at the most recent P!NK prices the tickets were over $300 since I didn't try to buy when they went on sale - and I don't want to spend over $1000 for a concert plus a hotel plus food.

And I do love live music but the all day stuff seems to come with it expensive food, a lot of people who are too overserved to pay attention and it's draining.  And our kids are reaching a phase where there's a good chance that an all day thing also means they're missing THEIR stuff.  So unless there was a festival that was a group of all my favorites it's something I'm more and more likely to pass on.

I also realize that while DH likes live music I think his desire to be out and immersed in it for a full day is more than he prefers.  He's more outgoing than I am but I am realizing he's also introverted enough that he needs recovery time from being out for a long time.
  • Hmmm...tempting!

Harrah's just emailed me a free offer (hotel and airfare) to go to Atlantic City with a guest.  It's a junket so I can't choose the dates, but they're in mid-April which seems like a great time to go.

I did this same trip through Harrahs years ago.  But I "cheated" on their offer and would probably do that again, lol.  I booked my own hotel in NYC for the two middle nights and took the bus there.  In fact, that trip was the first time I'd ever gone to NY, though I have been a few times since on my own dime.   Poor Harrah's.  They paid all this money to send me to AC.  And I was hardly at their hotel/casino, lol.

However, if I do go on this trip, I think I would go out on the town in AC more than I did last time.  I pretty much stayed in the hotel and didn't see much of it.

I’ll be honest you’re not missing much AC isn’t a nice town.

Just coming here to say the same thing. There's really not much of a "town" in AC. The boardwalk is fun in the summer months. I can't remember if there was much open last time I was there in the spring. Other than that, the only other thing to really check out would be the other casinos and their restaurants.
  • @STARMOON44 and @climbingsingle, thanks for the feedback.  That was the vibe I got when I was there last time.  It was smaller than I was picturing.  Reminded me of Biloxi, MS.  In that, it's a nice place to go if you like to gamble and it's driving distance. Plus near the ocean.  But if you have to fly there, just go to Vegas.

I definitely would not cut my NYC trip to spend more time there.  But I only drove past the boardwalk and the ocean last time, so I figured this time I would check it out more.  The flight gets in at 4:30pm, so that would give me a few hours of daylight to walk around the boardwalk area.  Sounds like I might not even need a few hours, lol.

The flight is great because it isn't commercial.  Harrah's rents a jet, so the flight is non-stop.  They also have transportation waiting at the airport to take everyone to the hotel/casino.

Oh damn, they rent a jet? That's cool. I would definitely take that trip. I'm not a big gambler, but I'd for sure enjoy eating around the casinos and checking out some spas. There's a new resort - Ocean - that's really cool and I've heard their spa is nice.

  • It’s my birthday today but I do not feel very festive. I can already tell today is going to be a mess at work. It’s the first time I’ve worked my birthday in years and I should have taken it off and burned a vacation day lol. Otherwise SSDD. Picked up a nice bottle of wine to try this weekend and I’m excited about it.

Still have the background check to do.  But we've accepted the deposit from one of our S8 applicants.  Yay!

For having such a low response compared to what our ads normally are, this was one of the smoothest and easiest vacancies we've filled.  Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself!

The plane itself isn't any different from a big carrier and is as large.  Though still no legroom and cramped seats, lol.  It's just that the passengers are all Harrah's invitees.

But it's all the rigmarole around the flight that's so much easier.  No layovers.  No delays because the "crew is coming from a Denver flight that was delayed" and blah, blah.  The plane and crew is there solely for that Harrah's trip.

I'm still a minnow, compared to the whales that (probably) get real private jets that are small and only for a handful of people.
