Wedding Woes

Prudie Thursday

Woo hoo!  I just got my company's Christmas party invitation.  It's being held at the Fairgrounds, which is walking distance to my house.  Open bar, here I come!  lol.

It's a daytime event and starts at noon, which is a little weird.  But that's okay.  The main thing is how convenient it will be.

Super convenient! Yay! Work wouldn’t provide transportation if it were further?

So I joined a meetup that I had heard of before from my other active ones.  There’s a trivia night next week so signed up just for that! But then I saw a travel one to Punta Cana. All inclusive airfare, taxes transfers, food, alcohol, and your own room for $1700!
That’s a fantastic price. I do have the PTO days but it requires 6 days off leaving me with nothing after it.  AND I’m literally brand new to this group. How would it look if a newbie jumps in a big trip like that? Oh, because there is so much cross over in this group I do happen to know one person going so far.  I want to PM her and ask if she rsvp’d yes as an interest or she already booked? Because I’ll feel at ease knowing at least one person.  Plus between now and then I’ll make my best effort to go to events.
The resort looks good (pictures can be deceiving) and more than 5,000+ reviews at 4/5.  And I know some areas in DR are bad but apparently Punta Cana is ok.  And we wouldn’t leave the resort. But the rooms alone, if booked through expedia is $2,622 for the 7 days.  How am I able to get a flight AND the rooms at $1,700? I know @mrsconn23 is in the travel industry… should I be weary?

  • That sounds so fun @short+sassy! Before education I worked an office job in the city and I used to love the annual holiday party.  No school I’ve worked at has ever hosted anything open bar-like, we celebrate but during the work day (think bagels and baked goods in the faculty room), I miss those days.

I have a 3-day weekend, schools are closed tomorrow in observance of Diwali as well as Veterans Day, and today is my Friday.
My kids have developed coughs that I’m keeping  an ear on. Otherwise pretty ssdd.
  • I’ve done Punta Cana before @charmedpam in a resort and it was great! I traveled with a group of girl friends and we felt really safe. We walked all around the resort, at night, with no issues!
  • That sounds so fun @short+sassy! I wish our company would do the mid-day thing. H's old company used to do that - they'd host a super duper fancy lunch with an open bar and lots of prizes, including guests, from like 1-5, it was awesome!

Our company has had amazing Christmas parties since i've arrived, fancy dinner and open bar and dancing at places like The Shedd acquarium, the Field Museum, the Art Institute, John Hancock signature room, etc. This year they announced we're having at...........our new office!!!! What a let down.

I have work happy hour and book club right after tonight so H is on his own with the little dudes. I'm never looking forward to this stuff and then i always have a blast when i get there, hoping that happens tonight too!

    This one here; https://www.riu.com/en/hotel/dominican-republic/punta-cana/hotel-riu-palace-macao/index.jsp?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD5ycjILN4CAXySNTUBSAqldBVs0-&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4Z7_0Zi3ggMVQc7ICh2XKwhqEAAYAiAAEgKOUvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

a quick look at my vacation log (lol) tells me I HAVE been at the Punta Cana port in 2019 on our cruise. I think it was the best port of the trip, but don’t remember much.  DR is on level 2 advisory.  Which is “proceed with caution”.
I’m so going to meet the love of my life there and go on 90 Day: Love in Paradise.  ‘Jus saying.
RE: work parties; Ours used to be elaborate back in the day too. No holds barred.  Now, we’re on tight budgets and ours are very low key.  We still have them but our accounting department is really shredding them to pieces. Almost feel guilty to drink at my upcoming one (said almost). I think it has to do with the rising costs and everyone looking at every penny now.

  • I like Riu resorts. I think it looks like a great resort, the reviews say it was recently renovated, and there seems to be some decent amenities.

I'd say to go for it if the company offering the package seems legit.  It could be a tour company of some sort that has negotiated rates.
  • There were a few bad years when my company didn't have a Christmas party.  But they do it up right, when they do.  They usually have a spring event also.

I also just checked and there will be horse racing on the same day as the party!  The Fairgrounds opens up their season on Thanksgiving day.

A different company I used to work for was headquartered in Seattle.  They changed their policy to only have "dry" events.  One of the project managers here who was a bit of a hot head, completely flipped out.  He claimed "culture differences" that those stuffy AHs in the PNW don't know how to throw a party and that is not how it is done in New Orleans.  So they better get their act together or he isn't going.

I don't know what magic he and the head guy (company VP) at our office pulled, but an exception was made for the NOLA's office Christmas party and there was an open bar, lol.  I'm sure it helped that our headquarters had 200 employees and our office only had 15 employees.  And the company would fly the biggest head honchos to both parties.
