Prudie Day

How’s everyone today?

Re: Prudie Day

  • Not a doctor or medical provider @ei34 but make sure you check your ferritin levels too. In my running community we’ve had a number of women who have normal iron levels but way way low ferritin. Hope you get some answers soon!
  • Love that you have a concerned and invested provider @ei34

Feeling a ton better today - I think a lot of my funk is my pre period angry phase that felt way more intense this month after it had felt a bit better the last few months. I'm sure i'll get it figured out and regulated but it sure is frustrating.

Having dinner with a friend and we're skipping our neighborhood book club so the two of us can catch up.

Took the boys to the driving range after school last night and they both hit some great shots! Hoping they both enjoy golf enough that we can do it as a family as they grow up.

    Posting prudie shortly!

  • Stressed here too.  I think I'm in the 'stressed and cortisol spikes and you wake up and can't sleep' phase.

So I did the Wordle at 3 AM.

  • I originally was very excited to go to a customer golf event next week - held in the mountains, gorgeous views, good networking. And I DONT want to go. I saw all these people last month but feel like it maybe looks bad if I bail? No other meetings scheduled. I don't want to fly 4 hours to play golf and come back. Someone please tell me it's ok to change my plans.
  • Let me know what brand that high protein ice cream and if it’s good, Varuna.  I see them a lot too. I currently signed up for fit creamery and waiting for an email on a good deal with them.
oh this reminds me, I LOVED Chalene Johnson’s workout videos “”growing up” and was thinking of pulling mine out the other day. I’m talking the old school turbo jam ones. She’s not affiliated with beachbody anymore, otherwise I’d rejoin that. I heard she didn’t feel she fit the brand anymore. I don’t think I lost weight when I did it, but it never felt like a workout.

  • I really want Taebo back, TBH and The Firm.  I loved those workout tapes.  I looked on EBay awhile ago but didn't find anything.  I wonder if they're on Youtube.

@levioosa The Litesport I use does have a VR version, but IDK how it works.  It does use Meta though.  I still have the manual model, b/c while I enjoy boxing without a bag, it's SO MUCH MORE FUN WITH ONE.  But they don't sell it anymore.  But boxing has been the one sport that I have fun, don't mind working out, and holy crap, it's a workout.

I do take additional iron b/c my doctor said I was basically anemic having had periods so long with no break (i.e. pregnancies).  I had gone in for fatigue and just general malaise and that's when iron and vit D were started.  I've never had my ferritin checked to my knowledge, I might ask my doctor about that one.

@Casadena I think it's okay to change plans, unless you need that networking.

The number of people I know that learned golf just to network makes me wonder if golf isn't just another MLM, forcing people to learn it, and there's just teams of people who hate golf, playing b/c some random cishet white dude eons ago decided to force everyone to do business with him on the golf course.
  • Haha I could totally see that with golf @VarunaTT.

Honestly that kind of mindset it partially why I almost always golf for work when given the opportunity. It's such a boys club/male dominated thing in general, but also in the corporate world that every time it feels like a tiny FU. Especially because i'm a fairly good golfer. It surprises people and gives the opportunity to network in a way that a lot of people don't get (which sucks, for sure).

I'd go for sure if it was local. I just don't feel up for spending 2 nights and 2 mornings away, 8 hours of flying, and 4 hours of airport time to play a round of golf.
  • That's literally how I feel about golf too. The only reason I ever even considered golf was for networking reasons. I suppose it could be fun with the cart and a couple of drinks but even then I'm pretty sure I'd get super bored after a couple holes. Wheel me over to the spa. I'd rather lay out with a cucumber drink and a facial.

  • I'm not doing very well today.  I don't usually get headaches, but I had a splitting one on Tues. and another one today.  It has been stressful at work and stressful at home.  I'm looking forward to my trip on Sat. and I know I'll be more relaxed when I'm there.  But the upcoming days to a trip always increase my stress level and add more to my already full to-do list.

I've been on the verge of panic attacks a few times.  I assume that and the headaches are related to the extra stress, but it's still weird because that doesn't usually happen even when my stress levels are higher than usual.

I also been experiencing bouts of mild nausea for the last couple months.  Not constantly.  It will be for a few days and then I'm fine for a good while.  It started again a bit last night and is in full force today.  It does seem to coincide with when I'm feeling higher anxiety, though not always.  So it's probably related?  But I've never had nausea with anxiety/stress before.  I dunno.

The classic "I'm so overwhelmed but the more overwhelmed I feel, the less I can do."

Since I'm bitching about my health anyway, here's my rant on today's energy levels theme.

I have always had low energy levels and fatigue.  But it's only been recently I've learned more about B12 or even HEARD of ferritin.

Over the last 30 years, I have complained about this to 12+ different endocrinologists and BEGGED for help.  None of them ever suggested or did anything about it, other than up my thyroid dose if needed.  But I've never noticed a difference in energy, no matter what my thyroid levels are.  Which I told all of them.  Usually multiple times.

I found out two weeks ago that it's very common for T1 diabetics to be low in B12 because we don't necessarily process it correctly.  This condition can also affect ferritin levels.

I can't remember if my B12 levels have ever been checked.   It definitely hasn't been for at least 10+ years.  But my ferritin levels have never been checked.

But then, these are all the same sub-par AHs who for 20 years missed the glaringly obvious signs I had extreme insulin resistance.  I shouldn't even be surprised, but it's fueling my hatred towards doctors even more.

I'm overdue for a gyno appointment anyway and want to talk about HRT, so maybe they will throw those two tests on for me also.  But I've heard how hard figuring out the right HRT treatment can be sometimes, that I feel hopeless about it.  If a bunch of endocrinologists couldn't figure out something simple and in their wheelhouse like insulin resistance, then how can I possibly think doctors can help me with something a lot more complicated.

  • *Hugs* @short+sassy Health is hard. Are you still taking the GLP-1? If you are that might be causing some nausea as well. Anxiety for sure makes nausea worse (I've never related to a TV character more than the character from Ted Lasso who dry heaved whenever they were feeling stressed or anxious) but there are of course physical causes like the delayed gastric emptying, or GERD that could be contributing too.

Thanks!  I do still take a GLP-1.  I know nausea is a common negative side effect.  But I've been consistently on it for two years and the only time I experienced nausea was in the first few days I took it.  I can see where it's possible negative side effects could potentially pop up at any time, but I think added stress is the more likely culprit.

On a bit of a different topic, Eli Lilly started clinical trials a few months ago for Mounjaro and T1 diabetics.  Crossing fingers it leads to FDA approval for treatment of T1.

  • @short+sassy I've also been on the GLP for about 2 years now. I'm back up to the highest dose and I feel way better now than I did at a lower dose when I had terrible nausea and was even having trouble eating. But I was also way more stressed with work at that time.

I hope Mounjaro gets approved for T1DM. I still have little hope it will get covered. These meds are amazing. I have people go from 4-5 meds to two with good control of their diabetes. But is it covered? Only like 50% of the time and I bet that's going to get even worse soon. I had one patient I was so frustrated for the other day. Her A1C had been over 11-12% forever, on like 6 different meds. Finally added Ozempic and it dropped to the high 8s. Still high, but a drastic improvement. Insurance denied any refills. It's rage inducing.

  • Ugh! Do you know why insurance is denying claims for
diabetics? Her story sounds like mine. My highest a1c was 10.5 or something, and this is the only thing that lowers it. High 7’s, and they want it below 7 - but I’m at a much better place than I was before I was introduced to it.

  • @CharmedPam Because of cost. The GLP medications are expensive. I pay out of pocket for mine (for weight loss) because I know insurance won't cover it. It's also shitty that when people start to get to their goals, insurance goes, "oh, so your BMI is no longer in the "obese" category, so this doesn't need to be covered any more!" Duh, that's the point of the med. The cycle is so infuriating

I've heard a lot of stories like that.  It's crazy!

"GLP1s are a medication for life."  "Oh wait, your BMI is below 25.0 now and/or your A1c is below 7.0?  Apparently, you're now magically cured of the medical conditions that caused those issues in the first place!  No more GLP-1 meds for you then.  Until your A1c or weight go up again, without the medication."

Along those same lines, I've heard of T1 diabetics having their coverage for continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) stopped because their A1cs have improved enough, they no longer qualify for one.  Back to glucometers.  Until their A1c gets worse and they qualify again (eyeroll).

To be fair, I've heard that more from people in countries with socialized medicine.  On my T1 subreddits, people in the UK have talked about there is a 2-year waiting list to get a CGM and there are qualifiers to be eligible.  The NHS is reluctant to pay for them and the sensors.  Socialized medicine is vastly better in almost all ways, but there are also drawbacks like that.

I learned a lot about it on a thread because some AH was mad that pregnant T1 women in the UK get to "jump the line" and can get a CGM right away.  I think he even called it discriminatory, smh.  Good!  They should.  Their need is higher, that's why.  What the hell is wrong with you?  He was thoroughly flamed in the comments.  That made me feel better, even though I don't have a dog in that show for multiple reasons, lol.

    ------

Weird stat about T1 diabetes and pregnancy.  A T1 woman who gives birth to a child after the age of 25 has about a 1 in 100 chance of passing the condition on to her child.  But if she gives birth to a baby before the age of 25, that stat drops dramatically to a 1 in 25 chance she will pass on T1 diabetes.

It's worse for T1 fathers.  They have a 1 in15 chance of passing T1 to their children.

I did quick check for those stats to make sure I remembered them correctly and came across something NEW to me.  Apparently T1 women have slightly decreased fertility rates.
