Dear Prudence,

I live on a lake with a community dock that I can see from my yard.

For the past month, I’ve noticed a young girl who appears to be around 7 fishing there in the afternoons. The thought of a young child being near the water unsupervised makes me concerned for her safety. She lives around the corner from me, but I don’t know her parents well. My husband says she seems to be fine, and we should ignore it. Would it be inappropriate for me to speak to them about it?

    Is she at the edge in a life vest? How deep is the water? Is there an association of rules? 

    When we had our boat at a place with a dock where kids would fish we were clear: if you're walking down on the dock and you need to have a life vest on to be on the boat, you need one to walk down the dock.

    It would make me uneasy if she has no PFD on and I would likely see what can happen by speaking up.  If there's a community association I'd also likely try to go to that to see if that can be made a rule.  Drowning every summer is not to be messed with.

    This one bothers me more. Unintentional drownings with children that age happen all. the. time. Even kids who can usually swim well. It's horrifying and preventable. She's still too young to be on the edge of a lake unsupervised and definitely not without a life jacket.

    Agreed.  And should be with a buddy - not alone.

    The grilling hot dogs letter was more myob, this is unsafe.  That's too young to be alone by a lake, whether she can swim or not.  Agree with checking out the dock rules, and making sure they're being enforced here.  I can't imagine there not being something about unaccompanied children.
