Easy on the eyes?

Dear Prudence,

My family is planning a trip to the beach next month, and my husband wants to wear a speedo. If I’m being completely honest, he doesn’t have a body that’s viewer-friendly (he’s allergic to exercise). Can you give me a way to suggest to him that he should go with something less revealing?

Re: Easy on the eyes?

  • As much as I don't want to be with someone looking ridiculous, this is one of those things where people get to decide how to dress themselves. Think about how you would feel if he fat shamed you in a dress you loved. He's not asking your opinion.
  • Meh - if I looked bad in a dress I loved I'd want my H to tell me.

"Speedo eh?  I love you in whatever you wear.  Are you cool that this leaves very little to the imagination of my parents?"

  • “i know you want to wear that speedo, but look at these trunks I found that I think is a little more appropriate for the family vacation”
If H refuses, hey, you tried.

I don't even like a speedo on the fittest man.  Too much skin for my liking lol.  I think I'd remind my H that everyone would be seeing (almost) everything, but, at the end of the day, it'd be his choice.

Yeah.  If I'm not watching Olympic swimming no thanks.

I kind of wonder if this is an issue because old trunks and mesh liners are less comfortable??  There are solutions for this though and I feel like the options isn't go for a bathing suit that's skimpier than the underwear DH wears.   I'm all for body confidence though so...as long as he's aware that this is definitely outside the norm?
  • I also think it depends on the beach. If he wore a speedo where we go every year, he would be the only one doing so. LW might want to point that out if it is the case. However, other places a speedo would be the norm. I hate speedos on anyone but what can ya do. As for comfort, there are other options. DS1 had trunks that are lined with compression shorts (we were just at the pool together).
