Hair straightener.  I'm kicking myself right now because I almost bought a CHI on cyber Monday, but figured it wasn't worth spending $100 on a new straightener while the crappy one I have still works.  Well guess what broke this morning....

So now I'm on the hunt for a new straightener.  I do want to get a CHI (or something of similar quality) because I've bought countless 'cheap' straighteners in the last few years that don't work too well to begin with, and then only last a year at most (I think this one only lasted 6 months), so I figured it's best if I invest the money into a good one that will last me a while.

I want to keep it at or under $100 since I don't actually straighten my hair every day.  So what do you use?

  • A CHI is totally worth the price. So much better than the cheap ones I've had in the past!
  • I'm no help.  I am in the same boat as you, I have the cheapo Revlon straightener that you can get at CVS for like, $20.  It might be time to upgrade to a big girl straightener but I use it once a week if that... so I'm undecided.  Everyone I know uses the CHI and absolutely loves it.
  • CHI all the way! I've had a pink one since my senior year of high school (so since like 05/06) and it still works as perfeclty as it did on day one.  My roommate tried to steal it last year.  I was not pleased.  I eventually got it back.  I know it's a huge investment to start, but in the end it's cheaper because you're not spending $30 or $40 to replace your other ones every two years.
  • I think mine is a CHI as well.  I got it on some super clearance at a salon in the mall last summer.  It's ugly as all funk, but who cares- it was like $39!

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • The Chi is totally worth the price.
  • I have a Biosilk one that I bought 3 years ago, and I love it. I use it every day, and I've never had an issue with it.  I bought it at a beauty supply  shop in May of '08 and I've never had an issue with it. I think it was about $99 or so when I bought it. I wanted the CHI too, but couldn't rationalize the price at the time. This was the next best rated and I love it.
  • I know CHI has a few different models, so which do you guys have?  I don't know what the difference is between them (obviously, since I normally buy a cheap one and don't pay attention to the features).

  • I have THIS Paul Mitchell one and I love it.  Actually, I had a CHI and the Paul Mitchell was my mom's.  Somehow we ended up figuring out that we liked each other's better, so we traded.

  • I had a Paul Mitchell I loved for ever.  It finally died on me and I got a CHI. I love my CHI now.  $100 on ebay.

  • The Chi is $70 on amazon, free shipping.
  • Argh, I can't find any pictures of what it looked like after straightening. But even when my hair was this long/curly, it worked great.  It still took forever just because of the sheer amount of hair I had, though:

Ignore the mess in the background, this was from getting ready for a wedding that I was a BM in and we all had out stuff strewn over the bed.

  • I still use a piece of crap Conair.  I heard the CHI ones are the best.

[QUOTE]There are quite a few Chi ones on Amazon under $100. I have a $30 Remington one that has lasted 2 years. Once that dies, I'm getting a Chi.

I normally buy everything I can from Amazon, but the reviews aren't that great.  Apparently people are getting fakes (separate dealer that just has orders fulfilled by Amazon), so I'm wary of going through them...

  • I have a CHI and it's definitely the best straightener I've owned.  I've had it for about three years and it's still going strong!  I think I paid $80 on eBay.  Well worth the money, I agree with chelseamb11, it's a better investment than $20 or $30 straighteners that don't work as well and have to be replaced every few years.

[QUOTE]Oh well that sucks. I hadn't read any of the reviews yet.

Yeah, and even if you do get a genuine one, CHI won't honor their 2-year warranty.  This is directly from CHI's warranty page:

"This warranty does not cover any steel parts; plastic parts; fl ex cord; damages caused by negligence, misuse, tampering, alteration, failure to follow safety, operation or maintenance instructions; <strong>appliances purchased over the Internet or through any Internet auction site or from any other outlet that is not a professional salon</strong>"

So looks like I'm going to Ulta after work...lol.

  • I don't know if you have Ulta stores/salons by you, but they usually have 20% off coupons and are on sale for $100, so you can get one for like $80.  I'm in the same boat as you, I've had the same cheap straightener for like 7 years, but I can't justify getting a new one until this one breaks.  Good luck!
  • I've had my CHI for 6 years and I love it.  It still works as good as the day I bought it and I straighten my hair a few days a week.

  • I have a CHI and a GHD straightener...I have to say I prefer the GHD one. Just seems like I can straighten my hair faster with it...I find I need to keep going back over the same strands of hair with the CHI.

I bought a Sedu from folica almost 3 years ago and I love it. If you get a CHI get the turbo, so that you can adjust the heat.

  • Maxius is the only one thats ever worked for me. It owns.
  • I've had my SOLIA for 6 years and it straightens my hair like it did on day ONE.  It's between $70-95, depending on size.  It's so good, all my family members have bought their own because I moved (and took my SOLIA with me) Smile.  The best hair tool investment I've ever made.
  • I have an amika. I told FI last year that I wanted a straightener for Christmas and this is what he got me. He got it at a kiosk at the mall. You can buy them online. My dog chewed up the cord in July and I send it back with the warranty and they sent me a new one. I would recommend it. http://shop.loveamika.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=20
  • I also recommend a CHI. And if you have a Harmon cosmetics by you, they take Bed Bath and Beyond coupons. I ended up getting my Chi for like $75-$80 a few years ago. It still works like a charm (and it's been dropped countless times).

[QUOTE]I just bought a "Herstyle" one this past weekend at the mall. It's normally $200 but got it for $90...the plates are fully ceramic and not just plated...supposedly better than a CHI. I am happy with it. My hair is long, thick and curly--the salonist straightened it in 20 minutes. I was amazed. I think they have a website--just google it. I got a year warranty and can go back to the mall for a year and get my hair done for free. Pretty cool.

<div>My mall has one of these kiosks in there, and they keep trying to sell it to me. It is pretty awesome when they do it, but my mom bought me a really nice hair straightener for my 12th birthday that just died on me, and I'm so scared of spending 100 odd dollars on something that I'm worried isn't going to be nearly as nice, lol.</div>

  • I have a chi. I think it's the one inch one. I love it and highly recommend it. I have a chi curling iron as well that I got cheap from tj maxx and it's great too!
