Fine China - Did you register for it?

So I was talking to Jess yesterday and wonder if this is a circle thing or regional thing or combination of the two.

I wasn't going to register for china (I say I because FI was flippant also but in the end doesn't really care) I didn't feel it was "us" and they seemed expensive. Mom and FI decided ok we should, for parties/family events/hosting. I spent HOURS being the super indecisive person I am, looking at patterns, comparing prices at different places and of course my FAVORITE one was probably one of the most expensive ones. When we registered this summer, we registered for them. I decided they weren't for us again, and no one would buy them, and felt bad having them on so took them off.

Since there were only 40 or so items left on the Macy's registry my mom suggested we put them back on. That was like last week. 9 out of 12 have been fulfilled. Whaaaa?

Sorry this got super long. But I was literally SHOCKED. I just didn't think my circle was into fine china at all, I know it's a typical wedding gift but dayum...

Who registered for it/why? Who didn't/why not? Just curious, no judgments here. I'll PIP mine because we love that.

I voted no because I am getting my nanny's fine china when I get married. That being said, if I didn't get her's I would probably register for fine china. I think its fun to have holiday meals on it and use it on special occasions.

We did; its not nearly as ornate as yours (which I love). I wanted a "bridal" set. I have my grandma's as well which is heavily decorated in blues, and as soon as we have a house and I take over Christmas I'll get my moms Christmas china. I love being fancy.

We are, and it's my favorite piece on our registry. We went with Waterford's Ballet Ribbon collection. We want it because our parents have always hosted holiday meals, and we want to continue the tradition. I can't wait to serve meals with these dishes.

FI didn't want to register for them because he didn't see the point. I was kind of torn because we're very practical people but I do like using them for holidays and such. My mom kind of convinced us to. I'm glad we did, I really like our simple pattern and if we didn't we would have literally had like nothing on our registry! Although I don't see a need for them in the very near future, I know down the road I will be glad we did register for them and have them.

We did, mostly because my mon wanted us to. We found a nice, simple pattern that we both liked. While FI doesn't think it'll ever get used, I'm sure that down the line it will. We also registered for some everyday dinnerware, so that when we move into a house in 2 years that will be "new". Actually, we are replacing a lot of stuff we have now, but we're not using most of it until we move. We just don't have roomin our tiny apartment!

I will see if I can find something similar to it on-line but it has a blue ribbon band on the rim with flowers on it. On the inner part of the blue band is a gold line. A little more formal then I would have registered for but its very special to me.

I pretty much only registered for fine china and some flatware. That's all we need.

In my family, we traditionally give china, silver, or crystal (Waterford only...we're Irish) for weddings. I was raised thinking that you give someone something special that they'll have forever and pass down.

Every holiday, my mother would tell me who gave her what serving piece as we set the table. I really liked that little tradition.

We haven't, but not because we didn't want it/won't use it. I seriously could not make up my mind. It was stressing me out knowing this was the china we'd be entertaining with for the rest of our lives.

There were some I liked, but didn't love and I just didn't want to register for anything I didn't love. FI, mom, and I (all together, separate, etc.) spent HOURS in Belk, Macy's, and our china store trying to pick out a pattern. I would pick one, then decide against it. Probably because I really like to mix and match things and the dessert plates mom and I loved were like $200/plate. Yikes.

FI really wasn't helpful either because he put on his, "Well, in Raleigh people have lots of different fine china's for different occassions" face and that did not help at all. It's supposed to be our wedding china, and subsequently more special than our Christmas china, etc.

I really liked this one, but we'd have to create and entirely new registry and I'm just not sure if I want to.

It's called Vintage Chic by Abby Larson (who's the mastermind behind Style me Pretty). It's a combination of the Vera Wang for Wedgewood Lace with a Wedgewood Harlequin Cuckoo dessert plate and cup and saucer. They actually have them at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

We would use this for spring and summer, then have different china for fall and then of course a Christmas one. Ugh this is so expensive!!

(P.S. FI and I love to entertain and plan on doing it a lot when we get a bigger house).

We only registered for everyday stuff. My grandma gave me my great great grandmothers fine china. Plus my FMIL is obsessed with dishes and I've already received a set of dishes and bowls for every holiday

Kelsey I LOVE THAT! So goregous. I like "busier" patterns or completely simple. So they either have flowers/design or just a simple band. I like about 15 styles. It was a nightmare.

Ash, that was a style I had in my top 15, I love that! So beautiful. I think that is really special and wonderful. My Grams china was extremely simple. Her MIL purchase gorgeous expensive china and my Gram asked for simpler china because it wasn't her. I'm honestly surprised I liked the styles of China so much and I'm glad I registered for them now because the peaches are beautiful.

I only registered for fine china, but it isn't necessarily for everyone.

My best friend was not interested in registering for fine china when she was getting married but her mother and grandmothers acted as though it was the end of the world, so she ended up registering for one of the Lenox patterns. At her shower, she received every single piece that was on the registry, plus some. Five years later (last summer), it was still sitting in the boxes so she returned it all.

We did register for fine china. Growing up my family always did "china dinners" for special occasions- birthdays, Christmas, Easter, etc. It was always something we looked forward to, and something I'd like be able to do in the future.

My family never used china. I don't think anyone even owns any. But FI's mom is obsessed with china. As a little girl, her mom used to take her and her sister to the store to look at china every Sunday.

There is a set of dishes at World Market that I fell in love with. It is a mix of these two styles. We will be using these for entertaining and special occasions.

They aren't really china, but I love them.

For everyday use, my FI needs something a little more sturdy. He has broken at least three dishes in the 4 years that I have known him and chipped practically every dish in our cupboard. One piece he broke was his mom's china bowl. So we got this everyday china that will be sturdier than the stoneware above.

I feel like I'm totally backwards here, but I think that is what will work best for us.

We only registered for everyday china, and only because we need to update our current china. I used to have a set for 8, but little by little, it's down to 6. And because there are 6 of us just with the 2 of us and our kids, we would like to have a few extra pieces. So, I believe I registered for 2 sets of 6 so we'll have 12 total.

We registered for fine china at Macy's even though we didn't think anyone would buy it, but so far 3 people have bought 2 sets of plates and some of the accessories. And we registered for everyday china at c&b and someone bought ALL of the place settings already.

I love all the different china's! It is something that I love but I just don't know how much use it would get and fi was pretty set in not putting it on because we do need so much off our registry as it is. We love entertaining and can't wait to get a bigger place and actually be able to entertain but I'm still not sure I would want the fine china.

We were not originally going to register for it...under my "we'll never use it!!" mindset. However upon the insistance of our mothers as well as all the people working at the stores, people will buy it so we might as well pick what we like".

We actually found a pattern that we both love so that made it a bit easier. I guess it will be nice to have if we host holidays which is likely since our families are friends. Plus we didn't register for everyday dishes because we already have a really good set and FMIL bought us some more of the ones belonging to it.

We have not registered for any china. What we have for everyday coordinates well and I have my Coca-Cola set put away that's never been used. I got an ad for Lenox set below that I LOVE, but can't justify the price even if someone else is buying it. Even for holiday dinners, my family would break something and I'd have to cry. I love this pattern though. Red and turqouise are my favorite colors---and wedding colors!

We are only getting every day china. My parents have two sets of china, his parents have...3? 4? I don't even know. And having a small NYC apartment there is no where to keep an extra 8-12 sets of dishes.

Not to mention I have no idea how we would ever pick out a china pattern. FI hates anything remotely "girly" so no swirls, no flowers, no birds, no fruit, no colors other than neutrals...

We just did everyday. FFIL is giving us his mother's fine china after we are married. It is simple but beautiful. My grandma gave me her sterling silverware when she moved into her apartment.

My family does special china dinners, too. Any big eating holiday. FI's parents have never used any china they might have, which is where his opinion on them stems from. I'm hoping we can continue the tradition of special occasion china, or even when our parents come for dinner.

We registered for both everyday ware and fine chiina. I love the idea of passing it down to our daughter or a daughter in law (hope they like it:)

I love this pattern and there are raised pearlized circles within the pattern.

*I will say I was surprised that the bowls did not come with the set. Each bowl is seriuosly ridiculously priced. We may look at other options for them.

We registered for both...probably because everyone I know has wedding china, haha. Also, we plan to entertain a lot and I actually plan to use my fine china whenever I want, even if it's just a random Tuesday. They're durable and meant to be used and just too pretty to only take out on special occasions. We also registered for crystal and FI has silver that was passed down to him, so we needed formal china.

I like really ornate patterns--I'm a pretty ornate person, haha. The first one I liked could only be special ordered and was really expensive, so I ended up choosing Lenox Painted Camelia:

We'll probably also end up with a second pattern at some point in our lifetime that we'll buy. I just can't get that other pattern out of my head!

We didn't think it was "us" we are not formal or fancy and don't have a dining room table to use them at.

We are looking for a nice everyday set that would work if we had people over. but no one I currently know, who might be a guest at our house would ever think twice about us not having fine china. We don't have the storage space either.

I even feel guilty for having (what I think is) expensive everyday dishes on our registry. I would guess its some older, more traditional people who like to buy formal china for weddings. My friends probably wouldn't.
