Reception Music

So what kind of music are you ladies planning on having at your reception?  My FI and I primarily listen to rap/classic rock/pop but with our guests being mainly my parents age, I feel like if we played rap or pop that no one would dance.  I was thinking of doing a classic rock reception as we are huge fans, and most of the older people would know those songs. 

What are you ladies doing? 

We are planning on doing an after party at a bar/lounge in Kihei and I figure the DJ there will play 'younger' music that we will like but I want to get everyone on the dance floor at our reception too!

    I think doing a mixture would be fine, but if you'd prefer to do just classic rock that could be fun too.

    I remember at my best friend's wedding "Pour some sugar on me" came on and him and his wife were dancing and everyone cleared the floor because they were just so captivating to watch! It was actually really awesome :)

    Hm, we had our DJ just pick things.  During dinner, we asked for a mix of easy contemporary (eg, Jason Mraz  / Collbie Calliat), Pop Country, and Vitamin String Quartet.  Our caveat was no Enya, no Jazz.  For dancing, he played mostly hip hop / dance music, but we had a very young crowd.

    What about some fun multi-generational activities like the Conga line or electric slide?  My mom and her friends *love* that kind of stuff.  Also, fun upbeaty songs like RESPECT, and Brown Eyed Girl, and non-rap happy songs always seem to work.  YMCA?  Your DJ should be better at it than me...LOL.

    We are doing exotica, jungle and Hawaiian during the first part of the reception. Then when it's time to dance we will do stuff like Elvis, James Brown, Al Green, etc. Since we are doing a vintage element to the wedding we wanted the music to reflect that.  Could help you as well since none of that includes rap, hiphop or anything else older ppl roll their eyes at. Wink

    We are doing a mix of classic and 80's rock during the cocktail hour (had to throw in my 80's rock somehow), hawaiian and love songs during dinner and pop and faster classic and 80's rock during the reception. Like you, we're going to head to a nearby bar that plays hip hop and pop for our guests who want to dance more.
