Guys. One time I had a grievance filed against me for emptying my garbage can at work. True facts. Instead of walking 10 feet to throw out the garbage bag to the main garbage can, I was supposed to file a work-order request form. Then wait a week for the lazyass custodial guy to come empty it, because he's union and he has 'first dibs' on that work. Seriously.
*Disclaimer- I realize not all custodial workers are lazy. In fact, I have tremendous respect for people who DO work custodial jobs. But if you ARE lazy and you suck at your job, your company should have the ability to can your ass.

If I was feeling charitable, I would chalk that up to terrible interviewing skills rather than a sense of entitlement. During my job interviews, I WANT to ask those things, but I make myself hold off because I know it would be frowned upon.
This makes me sound like a terrible person, maybe. But the thing is, I wouldn't work if I could afford not to. I'm pretty honest with myself that (for me) a job is trading my free-time for money. And I kinda want to know how much money I'm gonna get!

Any state law that gives higher benefit to the worker takes place over the flsa. Like in any state where state minimum wage is higher than $7.25, the state minimum wage would be the law. So if your state has labor laws protecting minimum wage, overtime, or child labor standards for agricultural employees which are of more benefit to the employee, those woud take the place of the flsa. States can do more than is required of them, but they can't do less.

Well, I certainly do fear for common sense, without a doubt. Like I said, I manage to NOT ask those things right off. But I do kind of wish that the whole interviewing process were more honest, if you know what I mean. The interviewee would say something like "I would rather not work, but I need a job and your company isn't too objectionable. How much would you pay me to come and do stuff for you?" And then the interviewer would say "You seem like you could do some stuff that needs doing around here, and here's how much you are worth to us."

Yea. I guess you could make the argument there that the kid receives the larger benefit by not being allowed to work hours that would be trying for an adult for wages that would be embarrassing even to the child. The only restrictions that the flsa really makes for them is that under the age of sixteen, they can't work during school hours or be tasked with hazardous work. So at 14 they can pick corn (I assume corn gets picked) from 4:00 pm- 4:00 am and then go to school from 6-3. As long as they don't use any dangerous machinery to pick the corn.
Is it bad that I dont pay attention enough to any companies business practices to care enough to boycott them? I hate going to walmart only because I hate every living person inside of walmart.
You used "than" correctly. "Than" compares two things (I'm hungrier than you, my cat is more stupid than yours). "Then" is a time thing, mostly. It usually indicates when things happened. (I ate, then I wasn't hungry anymore; I got my cat a brain transplant, and then he wasn't so stupid.)

[QUOTE]I can not tell you how many recent college grads I interviewed this summer who asked about vacations, raises, and promotions before asking anything about the company or actual work they would be doing. It was mind blowing.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: What companies do you boycott? : My aunt had this happen to her too at a certain NW plane manufacturer. Except it was the employees who started ganging up on her for being so efficient. They'd mes with her work bench and steal her tools and even destroy some of the parts she was working on. She complained to HR and they turned a blind eye to it and basically told her to suck it up.

</div><div>Yup. They once stole my mom's purse for every day for a week at 4:30 so she had to spend a half hour looking for it. The reason for this? They all stopped working at 4:30 and would sit at their desk staring at their typewriters with coats on and purses zipped until 5:00pm. They were mad she kept working until 5:00pm.</div><div>
</div><div>The weirdest part about this story to me? Isn't it MORE boring to sit there doing nothing than actual work?</div><div>
</div><div>Also, Mike once got told by his secretary he could not get a new pen (she was in charge of dispensing office supplies) until 12:30pm as it was lunch break. She was sitting there reading the paper with pens right there in her top drawer. ????</div>

<div>I don't think that's bad at all. Free market and all ;) You chose whether that cost of working outweighs the benefit of getting paid.</div><div>
</div><div>Here's the part where I could say the union effs it up by forcing you to accept a pay and negating your ability to bargain for a higher rate that makes it worth it for you to work (assuming the employer also finds you valuable enough.)</div>

</div><div>No, I know. But really? If the interviewing skills are what's lacking then I fear for common sense. I mean, we are all burning to know the perks of a job, but on the first interview I hope most people have the sense not to show over interest in things like when they don't have to work and when they can reap more money.</div>

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: What companies do you boycott? : I did not know that. Is that a national thing? I really thought, at least in WI/MN, that it had to be a farm owned by your parents or grandparents... otherwise normal labor laws applied.

</div><div>Ok, So let's say the federal law said any kid can work on a farm for 24 hours/day. But WI had a law that kids could only work on their family farms. Then kids could only work on their family farms, right?</div><div>
</div><div>I wonder if it does vary greatly from state to state.</div><div>

Well, I certainly do fear for common sense, without a doubt. Like I said, I manage to NOT ask those things right off. But I do kind of wish that the whole interviewing process were more honest, if you know what I mean. The interviewee would say something like "I would rather not work, but I need a job and your company isn't too objectionable. How much would you pay me to come and do stuff for you?" And then the interviewer would say "You seem like you could do some stuff that needs doing around here, and here's how much you are worth to us."

<div>I took a paycut to come to the job I have now. Well, not really after my bonus program but the reason I took it? My boss flat out told me the salary and all the deals on our very first phone call. I knew I would much prefer an environment like that :)</div>
