Escort cards...do they have to be formal?

I'm trying to figure out how I want to do the escort cards and I'm confused as to whether I need to write:

Mr. & Mrs. Joe Smith

or if I can write:

Joe Smith & Jane Smith
(or vice versa, woman first?)

I'm making cards that will attach to (fake) sand dollars and they will be in a sandbox in the entryway to the reception area and I want to at least get a rough idea of how they should be printed because its going to take me some time to get the sand dollars ready to go!

  • I forgot another option:

    Jane & Joe Smith

this one is probably better than Joe Smith & Jane Smith, oops!

  • I will probably put Mr. & Mrs. I'm not sure what the "right" way is though.

  • I say it depends. For us doing Mr. and Mrs. Smith wouldn't work because there is a specific name that there are 3 Mr. and Mrs. so they wouldn't know who it referred to unless they were all at the same table. Personally I say Joe and Jane Smith would be best but I don't know if you have any deplicate last names on your list.

P.S. I love the idea for how you are setting up the sandbox! Super Cute!
  • I'm doing case to case basis...some people like parents friends etc might do mr. & mrs. And our friend just Lauren and Matt smith.

  • I think we're going to do ours informally.

  • I am doing mine individually but what happens if you get a reply back with Mr Smith + guest? Do you put Mr. Smith's guest?
  • I have gone back and forth with this, too!

I was thinking of going formal... we have more than one Mr. & Mrs xxx (not related) and way more than one Mr. & Mrs. YYY (related),  I was going to just add in first names... Mr. & Mrs. David XXX and Mr. & Mrs. Brian XXX.

I noticed that everyone was putting their names on the Response Card differently.. Some were Mr. & Mrs, some were Bob and Jane Smith, etc.  A friend of mine said she and her bf almost made up superhero names for the response card (I was really glad I had numbered the backs when she said that!!) So now I'm thinking I might just use whatever they put on the card.  So...  I would put & guest if that's how they return the card!

    I'm still not sure...

I guess I think they should match the style of the reception.  If it's a super formal reception, then they should be formal.  Mine isn't going to be super formal, so I may go the less formal route.

  • We're doing them individually so I'm just putting "Jane Smith."  I would go with the formality of your wedding.  If it is formal, Mr and Mrs Smith.  More informal, I'd go with Jane and John Smith.
  • They don't have to be formal if you don't want them to - ours are also individual, so I'll be putting Mr. John Smith, etc.
