Should you tell a photographer you've decided NOT to use them?

Is it polite to tell a photographer that you've met with that you're not going to use them? Only one that we've met with has sent a follow-up email and I guess I would definitely tell him, but what about the others? Do they just assume that if they don't hear from you within a set amount of time that you're not going use them?

    I think it's polite, but not always necessary. 

    If the meeting went well but we decided to go with someone else, then we sent an email thanking them for their time and letting them know that we had gone with someone else.  If the meeting didn't go well or the vendor was unprofessional or disinterested then we just left it at that.  And if the unprofessional vendor proceeded to call us a million times after the meeting asking what we had decided to do then we let them leave voice messages on our phones until they turned blue or we would abruptly answer and tell them that we had opted to go with someone who we felt much more comfortable with.

    I agree with Peaches. We actually booked the first one we met with, but I had been emailing with another who was very nice and I felt obligated to let him know we went with someone else, and that it was only b/c he was so expensive and the other place had a great package including a videographer. If money were no object I probably would have booked the other guy just based on emails and his website he was that nice.

    I think if you actually met with them and took up some of their time, it's the right thing to do.  We met with a few photographers before selecting the one we did.  I didn't bother reaching out to each one to say we're going with someone else, but anytime one followed up, I let them know.

    It is not necessary, but I think the feedback wil be appreciated.  Be honest, tell them why you went with someone else (you don't have to tell them who it was).
