I got a basket at JoAnns and decorated it with some ribbon. I recommend having something, as many people brought cards to the venue and it was nice to have a central place to deposit them so nothing got lost.
We used a card box because it was provided by the venue. We probably would have gotten one anyway for our own peace of mind. Some people have horror stories about family stealing their money, and others like myself have just worried about staff with sticky fingers.
You should ask BecW2be for great DIY options for card boxes. If I remember correctly, she had some pretty amazing stuff for her wedding.

We were going to use a card box because I wasn't comfortable with the ide of cards being in the open like that if they had money in them. I can't say I trusted all my guests 100% to not steal them, or kids to not mess with them.
My MOH and her mom gave us some kind of box that looked like a well, I guess they call it a wishing well. Where the "water" would go was where you put the cards and the top was covered. It was cheesy looking, but whatever, it got the job done. Plus it really meant a lot to them to have it since her mom made it (and she used to be my stepmom, so I wanted to make her happy).
I put together a card box that looked a little bit like a wishing well.
Like PP said, I'd recommend having one just so that people know where to put the card they bring, and people will bring cards. A card box might also help prevent someone stealing some of your cards.

I need a thumbs up button SO BAD.
I never understood the card stealing. I'm not inviting anyone who would steal a card. I'm not booking a questionable venue. Maybe I'm just naive. Is card stealing a real problem?

Fever, I didn't think card-stealing would be too much of an issue either until I came here and read some people's crazy stories. There was actually a bride here who had to assign a close friend to take the card box during the reception and hide it in their car, because her mom wanted to snag the box, open all the cards, and count the money so that she'd know which guests paid what for her daughter's wedding gift. So that's not stealing, but like I said, crazy. You just never know I guess!

I used three vintage hat boxes stacked on top of each other, with a slot in the top one. I cut the bottom out of the top box and a hole in the lid of the 2d box for the cards to fall through. The bottom box was basically just there for show, I guess.
I personally think the "card box being stolen" stories are largely apocryphal.

You know, i didn't think about people stealing, i thought more about losing them. If people hand them to me, they would be fine. But i think if they handed to my FI, he would put them down somewhere and have no clue.
I would like to put some freakin' sharks with laser beams on them. Instead, maybe i'll just have some ill-tempered eels.
Me venue actually told me that if I didn't bring one they were going to charge me to rent theirs because the venue would not be responsible for lost or stolen cards.

I'm creating one to look like the Chrysler building in plum and light blue, to match our cake's art deco style. I don't trust cards just laying out, either. I think most of our guests are cool, but I can't say I'd be all that shocked if something happened.
I wonder if there's a way I could incorporate a shark with a frickin' laser beam attached to it's head to guard it.

Wow! That sounds intense! I'd like to see a picture of that.
This is my card box. It looks white, but it's actually a cream color with brown and orange ribbons around it. The little turtle and penguin bride and groom just made it more "us" I had a lot of fun making it.

i believe i found the big one at michael's, but i spray-painted both boxes so they'd match, the big box was white with big brown swirls all over it and the little one was grey.
