Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

dj cost?

I am in the process of looking for a DJ for our Friday wedding. I thought the price was high, but I was wondering what the average cost for a DJ would be? I don't want to be nosy & know what people are paying, just an estimate. The reception is 4-5 hours long. Thanks!!

It really depends on your specific needs & what kind of package you are looking into.

I have seen pakages as low as $800 and some as high as $4000. It would also depend on where you are located as well.

Definitely price shop and look at a couple different DJ's.

Entertainment was high up on our list so we knew it was going to be a splurge.

This is one of those questions better asked on a local board.  Prices vary so greatly across the country.   You live in a more expensive area of the country.  If you ask someone in Kansas what they're paying, the answer is going to be very, very different from someon in the tri-state area.

My fiance is a DJ here is south jersey.  He is new to the area and his name is not out there yet so he can give you an incredible price.  Trust me, he is very good at what he does and he will make your wedding great.  If you would like you can feel free to contact me and we can discuss price and such.

    Good luck and congratulations

I was just coming on here to ask the same thing. I'm in South Jersey.  A family friend gave me the great price of $795 and I wanted to know how much they usually charge so I can give him a nice big tip!

As I said on the reception board, neither vendors nor the people who help advertise for vendors are permitted on these boards.  If you're a newbie, you need to know the rules.  Because what you're doing is advertising your FI's business.

There are DJ's out there that don't charge an arm and a leg. In general, i think they are the most overpaid vendor at a wedding. Band members have had years of lessons and practice. Photographers and videographers are with you all day long spend hours and hours after your wedding editing. The florist spends hours arranging the flowers then delivering them to multiple locations. The DJ shows up and changes CD's for 4 hours. One quoted us $1200 for 4 hours with a single DJ. would love a job that pays $300 an hour!

A dj has invested thousands of dollars in his/her equipment.  They've invested thousands of dollars in the music they have to play.  They've worked for years at learning how to read a crowd, and how to make a party work.  They know what music will get people up dancing, and when to switch it up.

A good dj can absolutely make a party great.  A bad dj can completely ruin a party.  That's what you're paying for.  Their investment in the equipment they bring to you, and their experience/expertise.

Look at it this way.  My hot water doesn't work.  I call a plumber.  He comes out, takes a look at my hot water heater, and 15 minutes later it's fixed and I can take a hot shower again.  He hands me a bill for $375.  The part was $75.  The labor was $300.

I'm not paying for just the 15 minutes that it took him to make the repair.  I'm paying him for knowing what was needed, and what valve needed to be replaced.  I'm paying him for his experience, expertise, and training.

If you want to go cheap on a dj, that's your prerogative.  But you get what you pay for.

And no, I'm not a dj.  But I am a church organist and people sometime balk at having to pay $150 for me to play a couple of songs at their 15 minute ceremony.  And it's the same thing.  You can pay my $150~which is paying for my years of lessons and my years of experience.  Or you can pay a beginner $50 and get.....a beginner who will sound like a beginner.  Your call.

It depends where you're located but I've priced dj's from $600 to $2500.  We are paying $800 for five hours.  I know the dj is good though because he was a dj for two weddings that I've been to and they were both a blast!  My fiance and I have been to over 30 weddings together and the dj is what makes or breaks the reception.  You definitely get what you pay for.  A good dj knows how to go with the flow and get people up and dancing.  The last wedding I went to had a dj who played music that was extremely inappropriate.  It was more like music that would be played at a college frat party.  The dance floor stayed empty most of the night and the reception was pretty well cleared out by 9:30.
