Register for Gifts

When do u usually register for wedding gifts.

Re: Register for Gifts

  • I just finished registering a couple weeks ago and my invites go out tomorrow.  I did have a shower, but it was very small (my mom, my grandma, FI's mom and sisters, and FI's aunt) so I didn't register.  If I had had a larger shower, I probably would have registered about two weeks before the invites for that went out.  HTH :)
  • You can register pretty much any time after becoming engaged, but the problem with registering TOO early can be availability of items, so if you're planning on registering for anything seasonal, hold off for a while. Things get discontinued or back ordered, and while most stores are good about letting the couple know, it can still be a pain if there's nothing available for guests to buy when your wedding comes. You also might not want to get too specific with decor in case you end up moving or redecorating before or right after the wedding.

I would definitely recommend waiting no longer than a month before your bridal shower. Some people like to get the first crack at your registry, so they will go shopping the day the shower invitation arrives.

One thing I'd recommend if you're newly engaged and excited about registering is starting a basic, small registry of classic items (Kitchen Aid mixer, Dyson, etc.) that you know you want and you know will not get discontinued. That way you've started, and if anyone wants to use your registry for birthdays/Christmas/engagement parties, they can. As the wedding gets closer, you can go back and add on things like art, picture frames, towels, anything you might want in a certain color or style, as well as seasonal or new items.

    Hope that helps!

  • I agree you should have it done before your either shower or wedding invites go out.  The day after my shower invites went out I had 3 items purchased.  It was intense.  The day after my wedding invites went out I had 2 more items.  We actually had 2 gifts purchased before wedding invitations went out.

I registered really early (13 months out) because I was graduating from law school.  I got a couple items for Christmas and a couple items for graduation, but other than that it's been pretty stagnant until the last couple weeks.

  • I registered about 8 months out because people wanted to get us stuff off our registry for Christmas. My shower isnt even for 2 and a half months and invites havent even gone out for the shower yet and there is stuff purchased off of it. I wouldnt wait too long and do it super last minute, I personally kept changing my mind about some things.

  • Jan 2014 sounds great.  I'll be honest - I started research a couple months before registering, because I was totally overwhelmed by the stores and the options.  FI and I thought through a lot of things (colors, patterns, etc.) in addition to reading tons of reviews.  It took us a lot longer than we thought it would, but I can tell you it is paying off.  The things coming off our registry... frankly we are incredibly excited, and so far I can't see us making any returns because they are high quality items.
