October in New England HM- What to do?

Fi and I have been thinking about going somewhere like Lake George, NY, Nova Scotia, Vermont,  Cushing Maine.. Somewhere New England esk.  However, it will be in October, so any location that is typically a snow lodge wont be snowey, so thats out.

While I plan to spend lots of "quality" time with my new husband, at SOME point we will need to come up for air ;) and Im just worried if we go to some remote location, we literally wont have anything to do.  So..

Is there a New England area/town that has things to do in October?

Re: October in New England HM- What to do?

  • I live in Connecticut and FI and I did the Connecticut Wine Trail this past fall and LOVED it! They gave you a passport with all the winerys in it and each time you went to a tasting you'd get stamped. Once you had a certain number of stamps, you could turn it in at any of the wineries and be qualified to win a trip to Spain. It was a ton of fun and it helped us drive around to different parts of the state we had never seen before and were very beautiful with all the foliage. If you were to stay in Connecticut, there are a ton of bed & breakfasts you could stay in that are cozy, and then when you're looking for more action, you could stay at one of the casinos: Mohegan Sun, MGM Grand, and Foxwoods. They all have great restaurants, nightlife, shows, shopping, 2 great spas, and of course the casino itself. The casinos are located in the southeast portion of the state and are near a handful of the wineries on the Connecticut Wine Trail. HTH!

I'm sure a ton of the ladies on here will have great suggestions for Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, etc...
  • Oh I forgot to mention that each winery you do a tasting at lets you keep a souvenier wine glass from that particular winery. We now have an over abundance of wine glasses! Tongue out
  • You could go to the Berkshires in western Massachusetts- there are lots of great hotels/spas there where you two could shack up :), then explore the small towns around there for great food, antiques, and frequent cultural stuff like dance performances, plays, and concerts.

Rhode Island is also beautiful that time of year.  You could do a couple days in Providence and a couple days in Newport- or just stay in Newport the whole time and day trip to Prov, it's only about an hour away.  RI has GREAT restaurants.

  • Finger Lakes region in NY in you're interested in wine tasting. Over 500 vineyards and wineries (and that's where I'm getting married!)

Boston (where I live) for fun culture and history. North Shore of Boston has great fishing cape towns. Fun shopping, pumpkins/apple are in high season then.

Newport - Ocean mansion CliffWalk is always fun + good eats.

Maine - Scarborough, Bar Harbour, Camden, all beautiful.

  • You've had a few New England area brides weigh in already, but as someone who lived there for 6 years and traveled everywhere, here's my thoughts:

A lot depends on how long you have. Do you want one destination, or a driving vacation? You can drive from Boston to Maine quickly, and each area has something different to do, from history to seafood & seashore.

I always loved Rockport, Mass, your typical touristy place, not far from Gloucester. Any of the seaside locations in upper Mass through Maine are great. If you want mountains, there's NH & VT, both fabulously glorious in October.

If your fiance or you both like sports, you can drive from Cooperstown NY (Baseball Hall of Fame) to Springfield Mass (Basketball Hall of Fame) in 3 hrs. Both will have nice hotels and/or B&B to stay.

I'd recommend you both sit down together at a computer for about 2-3 hrs and view some areas online, every state and city has their own tourist websites, with highlights, events/festivals,  and recommendation, and decide exactly what you want. Spa? History? Touristy shopping? Scenery? Great restaurants?

Good luck and have fun. I LOVE New England!
  • I vote the Berkshires or Vermont, but Newport, RI is nice as well.  The fall is very touristy, but you should be able to find some privacy in the mountains.  Boston, where I live, is also beautiful that time of year.  CT wine trail is really nice (I got married at one of the vineyards), but I don't care for the casinos.

  • What about Salem, MA? It can get a little hokey but it is a beautiful town with plenty of History. Lots of cute little restaurants/bars. My fiance and I were there for a long weekend this past October and we loved it.
