Wedding Woes

Yesterday was DD1's speech appointment

They said the issues we're curious about are not a problem due to her age.  She's perfectly on track and they look for the L, R and S sounds between the ages of 4 and 5.  If she's still not pronouncing them correctly, we will bring her back after she turns 4.

We also had her hearing tested.  Everything was normal, but we have to go back and recheck in 2 months because she was very distracted (and bored) during the tones part of the testing.  They just want to do it again and make sure it was distraction and not an actual problem.  She passed the other parts of the hearing test.

ETA:  DD1 was awesome during the whole thing.  She was cooperative and so damn cute.  The speech woman was very impressed that she answered certain questions - she said 3 yos don't usually get the concepts.  I was very proud.

Re: Yesterday was DD1's speech appointment

  • Well hopefully she'll grow out of it.

I'm sure she'll do just fine with the next hearing test.  The need to make them shorter.  They should know that toddlers only put up with adult's silliness for so long.  ;)
  • Woohooo!!  'The hearing was hard on 6let too.

To hijack: we had 6let tested for the free preschool.  the good news is he isn't "disabled" the bad news is we'll have to pay for preschool next year.
  • Seriously.  She was over it pretty quickly.  "Oh, I'm not playing with toys in here?  ::yawn::"
  • 6 - our school system has a free preschool open to all but it's only open to 4yos.  DD1 has been asking to go to school for months.  She's not really falling for the "I'll be your teacher here at home" thing anymore.  It's going to be a long 6 months.
  • What did they have her do when she heard tones?  6let got to throw a ball so that part was pretty cool for him.

  • Glad to hear all went well. :D
  • Preschool isn't free here unless you fall under disability.  Then they have to take you.  If you don't fall under that you go into a lottery that doesn't happen until MAY and then you still have to pay.  We decided to take a shot at the speech thing while still putting in a deposit where he is now.  I'm glad we put the deposit down because the morning is already filled for next year and the afternoon has 2 spots left.
  • She had to put these small plastic animal figures in a bowl for the tones.  She became more interested with the figures and making them walk and doing the animal sounds  than listening for the tones.  And we could tell she was hearing them, because she'd pause and you could see it in her eyes.

I'm so glad you posted this, because I have been fretting a teeny-tiny bit about DD lately:  she just mastered L's and still can't pronounce R's or TH's.  I Googled yesterday and felt a little better, and it's on my list for her parent-teacher conference tomorrow, so your post was very reassuring.

And really, who wouldn't play with animal figures, given the chance?
  • Heffa - the chart they gave us says the TH is within normal development between SIX and SEVEN years.  I never would have guessed.

Would you like to see the chart?
  • yay (mostly :)!

Once upon a time, a friend of mine had a toddler daughter having her hearing tested.
They gave her the instructions "every time there is a beep, drop the toy animal into the container".
And promptly the child started saying "beep" and dropping in animals.  Because their beeps were to slow and didn't come when she wanted.

They had to wait and re-do the tests for her too.  Because, yeah, toy animals :)

  • GB, that is hilarious.

Yay for good kids all around!

If you have the chart, then yes, that would be awesome, thanks.  :)

Dr. Google had all kinds, so it wouldn't hurt to have a credible source.  I was worried that the TH might be a problem with her missing tooth--she wasn't doing TH before she knocked it out, but I figured its absence certainly couldn't help.  Six or seven?!
