Getting in Shape

Pilates?

I live about 25 miles from the nearest gym so options are limited for me. I saw where a group of women are setting up a Pilates class in our community building and it perked my interest. I know nothing about it beyond an old Burn and Firm PIlates-ish DVD my roommate had in college. What kind of moves do you do, what's it work, etc?

Re: Pilates?

  • I love pilates!

Pilates in general focuses your core.  Most classes I've taken also do a fair amount of leg work, and sometimes they also do some arm toning.

I would recommend doing cardio in addition.

  • So it's predominatley more for toning rather than burning off calories?

Maybe I need like a Pilates For Dummies book before I try this lol. I'm not exactly the most coordinated person on the planet :)

Do you use a mat or anything else, like resistance bands or weights?

  • Don't worry, it's only as hard as you make it!  You could totally jump right into a class as a beginner.  You definitely burn calories but I think it's more for tone and definition, like lifting weights.  If you do 20 mins of cardio before or after you'll feel great!

We use mats, sometimes a pilates circle, exhttp://www.amazon.com/Stamina-05-0020B-Pilates-Magic-Circle/dp/B000W09NYM and some light weights.

  • It's pretty intense toning. Trust me, if you do it right, you will FEEL it for days. :) Usually you just need a mat. I LOVE the Rael Pilates DVDs or the Jules Benson DVD. You can see clips at collagevideo.com.

  • When I did it we always used a mat and sometimes we used small weights for extra resistance.  But like the previous ladies said, it does  a lot of toning so the weights are not manatory.  I remember doing arm moves and my arms would be burning even without the weights...   :)
