Re: Looking to drop 10 pounds before going dress shopping.....

  • Well, honeybabe, my advice to you would be to order a dress that fits you now.  with your wedding in November you're going to have to be ordering a dress soon so that it will be in in time to have alterations done.

Most dresses can be altered down two sizes (mine was) without losing the shape/feel of the dress.  Ordering the size that fits you now (or if you're inbetween sizes, the lower one) will guarantee that you can breathe in your dress on your weddng day.

Go try on dresses and figure out what you like.  Ask the sales people how much time is needed to get the dress in.  If you're still got time before your wedding (and leaving time for alterations) to try and lose some weight before ordering, then do it.

As for what do to to lose weight: use a website like Sparkpeople or The Daily Plate to figure out how much you should be eating to lose 2 lbs a week, then track everything that goes into your mouth.  If you are strict and stick to the calorie ranges, you will lose weight.  Start doing cardio exercise, high intensity intervals (HIIT) will burn the most calories.  Also, work on building muscle with strength training.  Muscle tissue burns more calories, and weight loss without strength training loses both fat and muscle.

  • I totally agree, it's all about calories!  I have found that keeping a food diary was my best tool.  You can find out how many calories are in what you're eating off of fitday.com.   I have lost 20 lbs by doing the calorie counting, and I also run 4 - 5 times a week for 3 - 5 miles.  It's a two headed dragon, you have to build the muscle (plus it looks great to have some definition in that dress!) I'm not a fan of "diet" more so just tracking the calories and trying to keep them in the 1200- 1500 range.
Good luck!  My wedding is in November too!  Hopefully we can encourage eachother to keep up the good work!
  • I think the idea of ordering it now and making alterations when you lose the weight is probably the best way to go.  This way you are not stressing about finding a dress and making aterations last minute
  • I personally would not want the stress of waiting too long to order or of having a too small dress. I bought mine in the size I was then. I've since lost 9 pounds and plan to lost at least 10 more. It will need to be taken in. I'm not stressed at all, just focused on exercising and eating right.

  • Honeybabe and mia, eating less than 1200 calories a day can be dangerous, and should only be done with your doctor's approval and very close supervision.

  • You know what happens when you eat less than 1200 calories a day?  Your body goes into starvation mode, and then you not only odn't lose weight, you will screw up your metabolism, and probably gain.  So, don't do that.

The ladies already gave great advice on the food aspect of this, I wanted to mention the dress part.  I would aim for a dress with a corset back.  That way, if you do lose the weight (bc you need to order a dress really soon), it will cost less for alterations.  If you don't, the dress will still fit.  Also, please remember that 10 lbs will probably only be one dress size, depending on where you lose it from on your body.
  • Ditto pps.  You should order your dress now at your current weight and have it taken in if you lose.  My dress took 10 months to come in so I really wouldn't wait too long.  It's a lot better to order a dress that is too big than too small!

  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions.  I have been afraid of going dress shopping because I just feel so self-concious and just want to look good by November.  Though you all are right, I can get the dress that fits me now and then as I lose weight it can be altered to fit my body that it becomes.
  • I bought a dress a size smaller then i am and am now trying to lose a size by june!! (3months!)
  • I order a dress that fit me perfect and today I am going for my fitting and I lose inches and dropped one size. I have done alot of cardio workouts. Try the Zumba classes because its fun and helps with burning calories. I also do the Green Tea Fat Burner pills everyday just don't neglect to eat right. Hope you lose the weight!
  • some bridal stores will allow you to exchange your dress for a year if the sizing is off... look into that as well... make sure that you dont put your body in starvation mode.. eat small meals all day instread of 3 large meals.. healthy snacks in between.... try it out.. I am getting ready to do that same thing myself. my wedding is in september, and I wouldlose about 60 pounds... or more if i can...
  • Don't focus on the pounds. focus on the inches.  a lot of resistance training with cardio.  Try doing cardio in the morning before you go to work, then go back to the gym at night for resistance training.  I am just about 1 year away from my wedding and I have started this routine and I am seeing results.  I ordered my dress already and with a corsett back, they told me I can drop two sizes.  If you stop stressing about a number and you really focus on how your clothing fits, you will have a better result.  Also, eating after 8pm is probably not the best idea.  Try cutting out any fruit or sugar after 6!  Good luck.
  • Order a dress that fits you now and then pay for alterations later.  It'll give you peace of mind!  And then join your nearest CrossFit gym.  I've lost nearly 15 lbs easily and I only go twice a week.  My arms are toned and I've lost inches off my waist and hips and thighs.  www.crossfit.com
  • Whatever you do DON'T order a dress that is a smaller than your current size. You never know what could come up between now and November. Plus, if you start exercising but don't lose a bunch of weight, you'll still be fit and look gorgeous in your gown. And for cdream, girl you better start doing some major cardio!

  • Hello! I am getting married this September and just got engaged a month ago so I'm planning very quickly. I already got my dress (takes 4 months to come in) and was a little worried about the same thing - I got the size I am now and hoping they can take it in if I happen to shrink.

Also, when I count calories it makes me go a little crazy and I obsess about food. I eat smaller meals and don't eat dinner after 6 if your schedule allows. I eat most of my calories earlier in the day and do 45-60 minutes of cardio and yoga 4 times a week and its helped me keep off 30lbs I lost a year and a half ago.

You will look beautiful no matter what weight you end up at :)
  • I would recommend the Blue Print Cleanse. Yes, it is expensive, but it will make you feel great, lose weight, and help prep your body for responding to workouts and diets. I did it for the first time last week. I initially lost 6 lbs, but of course gained some back. I am still down 3-4lbs. I plan on doing the cleanse at least once a month until the wedding (September).

3 day cleanse = $195 (In NYC area) and $265 (to be shipped anywhere). You get 6 juices a day (so 18 total). I would reccomend Level 2. You will consume around 1100 calores, so it is enough to keep your metabolism going. I was not hungry at all. You are constantly drinking this juice.

    Here is the site: www.blueprintcleanse.com

    GOOD LUCK!
  • If I can't count calories I get too obsessed with how much I am eating and I am always thinking of food.   I just buy healthy foods, eat lots of veggies and eliminated sugary foods (fried foods too, of course).  I make lots of vegetarian and lowfat meals and rarely eat out. If I want something sweet I eat a piece of fruit and sometimes eat fruit with yoghurt.  I also try and run or go the gym every day, but if I don't have time I just walk at least 30 minutes a day.  Little exercises here and there help too, such as doing sit ups, squats, etc. while wathcing TV at night.
  • I was suuuuper lucky and found the "just right" dress, on clearance... as is!  It barely needs alterations... maybe a few tucks here and the strap.  The dress is a size smaller than what I am, but it fit when  I put it on in store!  I've lost 13 lbs so far, and I have 7 months til my wedding, 3 until my first official fitting!
  • I definitely recommend buying your dress now and getting it altered to a smaller size. You don't want to be stuck with a dress that is going to cost a ton to get altered. It is much cheaper to take them in.  Also, don't cut your calories drastically, that can be dangerous. Just eat healthy and work out. I've been doing Jillian Michaels 30 day shead DVD. it's amazing! it's only 20 minutes, so easy to fit into a busy day and it is a great workout. you will loose inches and pounds if you are strict with it.
    good luck :)

First off, don't starve yourself. Only eating 900cals or something crazy like that will make you gain weight in the long run (especially when you start to eat 'normal' again).

This site will give you a decent range you should be shooting for:
    http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

Honestly, you should do a mix of cardio and weight lifting. I know a lot of girls are scared of lifting weights but it is one of the best ways to lose those inches.

No, you are not going to get "bulky" because you need to train really hard and eat a ton to gain big muscles (plus, most girls are not physically able to get big muscles).

Muscle is going to burn a lot more calories so you'll lose weight/inches a lot quicker than just doing cardio alone. If you're serious about losing weight you should be lifting 3 times a week (like M/W/F or T/Th/Sat) and then doing cardio on the other days.

Just do a google search for a good weight lifting program for women.
  • I'm getting married in May and about to give Nutrisystem a try.  Calorie counting and preparing healthy meals is just to crazy with my schedule right now, and I need something that will force me to stay on track... plus I have a few friends doing it right now so I figure it is good timing.  Anyone have tips that helped them be successful with nutrisystem?
  • I went to David's Bridal and found a dress that fit me almost perfect. It was a little big around the boobies b/c mine are not that big, but they don't alter until two months before the wedding. I plan on losing about 10-15. So I don't think it's a big deal if you go dress shopping before you lose the weight.

</div><div>Don't waste your money on this, please. I would recommend investing in organic and all natural foods (which is something you can continue even after you loose 10 pounds). If you live near a Whole Foods or similar grocery store, I would suggest that you start shopping there. True, organic foods are a little more expensive than you may be used to paying for groceries, but it's an investment that's worth it (but not as costly as a "body cleanse"). Also, not just organic fruits and veggies, but aim to buy everything all natural. And try to incorporate whole grain products (wheat bread instead of white, etc.) since that's generally a pretty easy switch.</div><div>
</div><div>I would recommend reading the book "Skinny Bitch." I am a vegetarian, but I am not vegan like the authors of that book advocate. However, the book does have a lot of good meal ideas and recommended products in it, and the authors explain the importance of eating organic, all natural products. If you want to go vegan (or attempt it) try it! I've done it before and it did help me shed some pounds, but since you're busy planning a wedding, it's hard to dedicate <em>that</em> much time to doing nothing but thinking about whether or not what's going into your mouth has animal products in it... Congrats on the wedding, and have fun dress shopping!

  • Hi, all i can tell you is to try the atkins diet. I've been doing this diet since January 2010 and so far I dropped 8 pounds. It's starts off with a 2 week period of almost eating no carbs, but then you start adding 5g of carbs a week, and as the weeks go by you will keep loosing weight! I'm not telling you this to advertise or whatever but I'm actually doing it. Here you can find all the info you need. And its free, you don't need to buy stupid shakes and pills or books with the procedure...its all there on the site.

Wish you all the best for your wedding!!

  • i just lost 15 lbs in 3 weeks by cutting carbs (no grains, just fruits and veggies) and increasing my fat (omega 3s) and protein (more meat, extra-virgin olive oil on my veggies, etc.)

this site has really helped (the people on the forums are really supportive) http://www.marksdailyapple.com/
  • Its very simple - READ INGREDIENT LABELS!!!!! NO High Fructose Corn Syrup, No Artificial Sweetners like Aspartame, NO Hydrogenated Oils.  Replace the processed foods you would have eaten with fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains.  It sounds simple but really thats all you have to do... You think you'll miss soda too much? Make your own with selzter water and 100% fruit juice!  Miss dessert?  have a piece of fruit! no midnight snacking! but do have a snack between lunch and dinner, and even breakfast and lunch, healthy snacks of a peice of fruit, some baby carrots, or a handful of nuts between meals will boost your metabolism.  Don't starve yourself - that slows your metabolism down, just eat really healthy!  Speaking of breakfast, most breakfast foods including cereals are big offenders of these articial and genetically modified elements so get into the habit of reading every label!  No matter what these pro- hfcs advertisements say, these things were designed within the last 100 years, but your body was designed thousands of years ago, and it can't properly digest these things...

i agree that you should buy a dress now that fits you - maybe a little snug - you can always get it sized down
  • I got you beat. I'm trying to lose a size (2 sizes would be better) in a month!  Ha!  I am so dumb!  I had a baby in August so I was trying to get a smaller dress and then drop the baby weight.  I have lost almost all the baby weight but those dresses sure do run small!
  • I agree with the girls who've suggested to go dress shopping now anyways, depending on where you buy it it can take up to 4 months to even get your dress in, and in some cases like mine I got a corset back which has adjusted perfectly to my weight loss and only need alterations on the bottom of my dress because I'm short.
As for losing wieght it can EASILY be accomplished by working out, 45 to an hour cardio, whatever you can handle (jogging, dancing, aeribics, elliptical) and better food choices.  You'll see the weight come off after a few weeks and if you need someone to steer you in the right direction with food choices I did wieght watchers and really liked it!
  • I've worked in the bridal industry for approximately 10 years.  You definitely want to order a dress that fits you now and for your largest area, whether it be your bust, waist or hips.  You never want to bank on losing weight.  I've seen many brides that plan to loose weight and never do and have a dress that is 2 sizes too small.  Talk about a ton of extra unnecessary stress.  You are probably going to need alterations anyways (since dresses come in standard sizes and not custom made to your exact measurements) and it is a lot easier to have a dress taken in and not let out.  Most dresses only allow for about an extra 1/2 inch to be let out.  That's not a lot. Plus you cannot always get rid of needle marks or have enough beading or design on your dress to fill in the extra; you may have to even order extra material and have side panels placed.  Again, a lot of extra stress and cost.
