Centerpiece advice please

Hey ladies,

How did you go about finding what you wanted for your centerpieces? Did you research online? Get an idea from a friend? Did you have a theme or idea in mind and then found something to solidify it? Walk around craft stores and stumble upon an idea?

I just do not know where to start. I am gun shy with all of the decisions after our first ceremony/reception site plan went awry after we sent in the down payment. I'm just afraid to make decisions unless I am 110% in love with whatever it is.

I first looked through the centerpiece photos on TK and I would save the ones I liked.  I started to realize that I loved the submerged flower centerpieces and I also loved the look of high and low centerpieces.  So I ended up doing one with a submerged flower and floating candle and one taller arrangement.  Pics in my married bio!  GL!

I just looked online a lot, thought about the look and feel I wanted for our wedding, and modified stuff I found online to suit our wants. I think first you should decide if you want fresh flowers, what type if you do, what colors, etc. If not flowers, what types of materials do you like? Branches, candles, fruit, rocks, etc.

    Good luck!

Looked online mostly.  Then we realized our reception tables were pretty small, so we wanted something very simple. I let the florist take the lead on the design.

I opted for the stumble around craft stores method. I knew that I was going to do them myself and that I needed some kind of vase. We went to Joann's this spring when they were clearancing out the spring stock for summer and we happened upon small grecian urns for less than $4 each. They will look lovely and are like nothing I've ever seen in wedding magazines.

I looked online a lot first... then I made the mistake of watching nonstop wedding shows on WE, like "My Fair Wedding with David Tutera" and convinced myself that being a DIY bride as going to back fire.  It did help me realize that if I was going to make a decision that I needed a theme!  Once I had a theme it all fell into place.  Maybe start with what kind of a wedding you want to have... fancy, fun, elegant, classic, etc...

I knew I wanted Flowers (I'm going for an indoor garden theme or was until I realized the price) I saw a centerpiece in a magazine and it was perfect. I'm using 24in Eiffel Tower Vases and then a huge arrangement on the top. Lots of green with various colored roses.

But I could only afford to do half the other half will be small sunken rose (PIB)

A lot of Knotties have "inspiration" photos in their bios. If you find someone with a wedding style you really like, that can help a lot. I also have links in my bio to some of my favorite (wedding and other) design blogs that I used for inspiration.

DH and I walked around Ikea for inspiration. We knew that we didn't want to spend money on floral centerpieces. What we ended up doing was buying raw wood easels there that were about 8 inches tall for $1 apiece. We also bought red picture frames there. Each dinner table had two easels back-to-back; one easel had a picture of the two of us, and the other had a picture of something that we think is cool - our favorite restaurant, our camper, etc. We'd also got frosted glass lanterns for $2 apiece that lined the aisle for the ceremony, and they were moved to the dinner tables as well.

I suppose a picture would have helped this explanation, but I don't really have one. HTH anyway!

I started with budget and worked backwards.  I'm not into giant arrangements, but know we want fresh flowers, and enough to fill down the middle of an 8' banquet table and I don't want to spend more than $10-15 on each table including table runner, vessels, ribbon, and flowers.  Our florist (Simply Stated Elegance) suggested doing small groupings of vases/jars/bottles with just a few buds in them, which we can get at the wholesale rate.  So now I'm buying and collecting all the small clear glass containers I can find and uniting them by tying ribbon around them.  I'm not concerned with matching, and our theme is mosaic, so these somewhat mismatched but still go together groupings should work out nicely.  We already have a small vase of 6 roses included for each table, but it's really kind of sad looking, so we're embellishing a bit ourselves, and in a way that it's cheap enough that we can let people take them home, if they want.
