[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Ask and ye shall receive : Yeah, a couple years ago, some psycho bride from the Disney wedding boards told us her pumpkin stage coach cost more than most of our weddings'. She also said we all had cookie cutter weddings (because, you know, Disney weddings aren't at all cookie cutter). Obviously we made fun of her, and the next day she had hunted down one girl's real name and said "I bet the dean of your medical school would be really happy to know that you spend all day on a wedding chat forum bla bla bla". She's BSC herself, though. So there's that.

Yeah I guess future got in touch with KA due to the mod position and asked if she could trace who did it, but KA told her TK just doesn't have the technology to trace IP addresses. So she advised future to just stick to her local and the other board she mods (just engaged, I think) and to not address any threads on E or SB and to delete them if they pop up on the other boards.

Personally, I think a better approach would have been to come over and say "I didn't do it," but whatever. Future apologiezd for the FB delete and said she was afraid of people trying to get to her personal info. I get it, I just wish she would have fought harder.

None of that means she didn't do it. We couldn't prove it was her beyond the IP address that traced to her tiny town in KS, and Knot Annie can't prove it is or isn't her because they don't have the technology, so Annie told her to just ignore it. Doesn't make her innocent.

To be fair, some of those completely innocuous posts contained passive-aggressive asides like "Am I allowed to post here?"

I never took sides in the board war and I defended you on E. (along with OWN) when you GBCK'd... but if our new goal on SB is to be honest, then the honest truth is that I found those comments just as off-putting as Amoro did. I just kept my mouth shut and fingers still out of the same reluctance to call out regs that J&K condemned in her Dear SB thread this morning.

The little digs that I still see 'round here (such as your "That's the kind of answer you'll get on E!" crack in the other thread) annoy the hell out of me. They're no different and no better than E. regs coming to SB. to ask things like "Are you all happy now?" Blanket generalizations do no one any favors and only perpetuate the illusion of a board war.

I have a question about this...was the IP address actually traced back to the town she lived in? It's been awhile since that post, but I thought someone said it was traced back to 90 miles from where she lived. I could be way off on that one, but I forget the details of it now.

But I won't take back the part about "that's the answer you'll get on E" because it is. "Don't ask" etc, is the standard party line over there whenever any newb asks what the KPS callout or the boardwar was all about.

Good question. It does seem like basic technology for anyone who runs a message board, especially an established enterpise like The Knot.
  • OWN, that's what Annie has always said. That's why they don't/can't ban IP addresses. If you get banned, you can just make a new name and come right back because they can't do anything with IP addresses.

I can't trace them, but I can see them and then use a seperate site to trace them on the forums I run, and they're just one of the random free hosting sites. So I'm skeptical. But I guess with so many members it might just not be worth it.

    It's B.S.

The forum software may not track IP addresses, but I'm absolutely 100% positive that the data exists even if it isn't easily accessible to someone like KA. It's not so much a matter of can't but won't. TK probably doesn't think it's worth a DBA's time to investigate message board drama. (Given how buggy everything else has been, they're probably right!)

Well I do know many people have IP addresses that are routed through places they do not live or work. That fact makes it really hard to track people down.

Personally, I think it's better to explain it succintly and move on. If you treat it like some dark secret in our collective past, then it takes on a significance it doesn't deserve. It also draws a very distinct line between those of us who were around at the time (and are "allowed" to know about it) and those of us who weren't.
