Worst day of my life..

So, I haven't been around much lately, and a huge reason for that has been this little angel..

I found him near a dumpster a couple weeks ago when I was throwing out trash.  He was in a little box and crying, so I took him home and took him to the vet the next day.  I was trying to find a good home for him, but Jeff fell in love, and we never got around to finding somewhere for him.. He was only about 5 weeks old when he found him, which was a little early to be away from his mom, so the vet said it would be good for him to be around an older dog.  Some of you might remember my posts about our crazy dog, Lex.. all those problems we had with him are gone now.  He's turned into an angel and loves taking care of Levi (we named him, yea).  They love each other.  Maybe too much:

Anyways, Jeff was trying to help out his old foster brother out cause he didn't have a place to live.  We were letting him rent out a room in the basement.  He's a little different, but we haven't had any real problems.. anyways, this morning at like 5:30 I woke up to hear him screaming at the dogs and hitting them and them whimpering.   I started screaming and ran downstairs and he was already back in his room.  I went into the dog's room and Lex ran out right away, but Levi was whimpering and I couldn't find him in the dark.  I finally found him in the corner, he couldn't move and had a ton of blood coming out his mouth and nose.  I completely flipped out and we took him to the puppy ER.

Well, after an hour of horrible waiting, they came out and said he was okay but his brain was swollen from head trauma.  The blood was coming from multiple bites on his tongue from the trauma, so no internal bleeding or spine injuries.  But his brain is still swollen, and he has to be on IVs and pain meds and meds to keep the swelling in his brain down.  He is responsive but wont move his body at all.

As they were rushing him in, they said that it could be up to five hundred and I said that was fine.. they came back out with the bill was $1,900.  Jeff just switched jobs and was off for two weeks, so money is super tight.. I don't know what to do.  It seems ridiculous that they won't take any sort of payment plans or anything.. I have no idea what to do.  Has anyone been in this situation before?  I feel like I'm going to throw up from the worry for my puppy and not know how I'm gonna get him out, or what they will do.

I just needed to vent a bit.  The roommate is gone now, but I feel like I should call the police or something, I don't know.  My heart is broken, and I just hope he gets better.  He's so sweet and already started out his life in such a horrible way, I feel terrible that I put him in danger and this happened to him.

Thoughts/prayers please?

    prayers to you and Levi...

OMG I want to rip that boy to shreds...how could he do that to a poor defenseless animal??  Makes me sick.  I think I would've called the police, you can not abuse animals like that.  I don't know what I would do. I would not be able to afford that bill. I'm sorry that I don't have any great ideas, this makes me so sad.

OMG I am so sorry to hear this. For some reason when animals are treated badly I feel almost worse than if it were a person :(

If they won't do a payment plan, you could make your own. Some people won't like this, but you could just get a 0% interest for 6-12 months Credit Card and make your monthly payments that way. Not ideal but you are in a tight spot.

I will be thinking about you!

I don't have any suggestions either. I seriously am almost crying reading this.  I honestly feel worse for animals when things like this happen than people.  Animals are so innocent and helpless :(

I am with Angie... I want to come beat up that kid. I would totally notify the police!!  That is a crime and maybe somehow you can get a tiny bit of money out of him (although if he is troubled that probably won't happen) to help pay for the medical bill.

GL and we will be keeping you and Levi in our thoughts...I hope he gets better fast, poor guy :(

omg, omg, i am so sorry!

i did a quick google search and found this number:

MN Animal Cruelty Investigators Animal Humane Society

maybe you can call them and see what they suggest?

Agree with PP's...  This is horrible.  Reading this, made my stomach hurt.

I also agree with KateJ10, to go the credit card route, if that's a possibility for you.

Sending good knottie vibes your way.  And keeping you & Levi in my thoughts & prayers.

OMG...this is so sad.  I am so glad that Levi is ok!  I would totally call the police.  How could someone do that. I feel if someone can do that to an animal...they probably could do it to a person and have no remorse.

I agree with PP about 0% CC for 6-12 months.  It's not ideal but it will work.  You are doing such a good deed by taking the puppy in and to have someone do this is so beyond upsetting.

I feel so bad for you guys and Levi.

You guys are in my prayers and I hope everything will work out for you...It always seems to!!!!

Keep us updated with Levi...so adorable!

I am honestly sick to my stomach after reading this. After all I am going through with my puppy right now, I'm probably especially emotional, but seriously, your FI's foster brother is a total d!ck. (Sorry I am not going to mince words about animal cruelty) That completely breaks my heart for your Levi, and I am very happy that in the end he will be ok. You are a wonderful person for taking him in and taking care of him. I would really look into pressing charges or going through animal cruelty officials. It is one thing to give a dog a disciplinary swat, but to make them injured to the point of brain swelling and bleeding--- that is a completely different kind of force. I'm so angry right now, and it is not even happening to me.

So many prayers and good vibes to your little Levi, I hope he recovers quickly. He is adorable & has such a good mommy. :)

I also agree with the CC thing if it is possible. That is how we are paying for Tory's surgery next week until we get our tax return. I've had the CC for a while but don't use it. Thankfully it is helping in this situation.

Also I agree you should call the police. People should not get away with animal cruelty.

I would 100% call the police. Animal cruelty is a crime!

I'm so sorry for you and the poor little puppy...he's been through a lot!! Ditto the CC route, unless you have any friends or family members that might pitch in.

ohmygod, Brianna. I'm so sorry. what a douchface.  Seriously.  I'm glad the roommate is gone... I have to wonder- was he being an asshole to the dogs at all before this, do you think? What spawned all of this sh.t this morning?

I agree with the Humane Society.  I've heard they can help with costs too. They might be willing to comp some of the costs of the medical stuff if you're willing to keep him?  It doesn't hurt to ask!

Honestly? I don't care if he's your relative in any way, you need to report this crap.  If he's doing it to a tiny defenseless puppy, who knows what the hell he's capable of if he gets upset enough.

    Hugs.  Keep us updated.

Can I just keep writing comments because I can't stop thinking about how angry I am and how much I wanna run and hug your little Levi? Ok, good because that's what I'm doing. ;)

ok, so I just reread this all, and I think you need to have a really strict conversation with the ER vet.  You agreed to $500, not 2 grand!  They should have cleared it with you first, before they did additional procedures that raised the cost so much.

I mean, i'm sure you would have still agreed to it, but it's the principle of the matter.  See if they're willing to compromise at all.  It certainly can't hurt to ask.  Just explain to them the situation.  You were both unemployed for awhile, and you really want to take care of the dog but you cannot afford an unexpected $2,000.

Did you ask for a pay plan at all?  What happens if you can't pay it all up front?

This breaks my heart. :( I agree with Steph, contact the Humane Society and see what they say. If they can't help financially I'm sure they can give you some suggestions.

I am sooo sorry. It makes me sick that there people in the world who do that kind of sh!t. I would totally report him to the police, animal cruelty, anyone and everyone. People like that should not be able to get away with it.

I am sending thoughts and prayers your way for finding a way to make the payments work and for a speedy recovery for poor Levi!

Agreed! I am also thinking how the guy who did this would have a hard time staying alive if my FI was involved and it was our puppy. That sounds extreme, but my FI would not be taking it well, to say the least.

(of course he wouldn't kill anyone, I'm just sayin' it as like, exaggeration of how angry he'd be, KWIM?)

my hubby to be is a police officer and animal lover. I just told him about this. He flipped out. You need to call your local police department and report it. And kick this F#(K!NG Loser out NOW. I know you said he is gone...by that I hope you meant gone for good. You need to at least get a police report. This may not be the first time, or last time this guy will hurt innocent animals and having a record on file that he has done this before could help in the future. Ugh I am SO unbelievably upset right now. I am so sorry!

I agree with PP...not an ideal situation to have to take out some form of 6 month no interest loan/cc to pay for this if they will not work with you to set up a payment plan. I don't know about all the legal mumbo jumbo...but maybe some of the ladies on here that are currently in law school can help you. Maybe pressing charges and making him pay some sort of fine when you are in court to have the puppy's medical bills paid for. Just a thought?

Ugh. So upset about this for you. I hope he feels better soon and doesnt suffer any emotional or physical problems. He is SO cute. Prayers~

This brought tears to my eyes.  I agree with Steph and honestly wish there was something I could do, I'd seriously raise money if that is needed.  I also agree with PP that mentioned their FIs reaction.  If someone ever hurt Linus, I'm pretty sure FI would be in jail.  I'm thinking about you and Levi.

Report him immediately - take photos and take action. I cannot stand people that actually have the nerve to do this. They say that those who injure animals only turn out to go much further and do even worse things in life, he is obviously capable of a lot of harm. I am so glad you were home to take them in right away. Hopefully he will be brought to court to be punished and also have to pay you back for medical bills, but unfortunately, I think a CC is your best payment plan. I also think you should call the CC and tell them the siutation, you never know, they might give you a reduced interest rate. I also think I remember hearing that if you have medical costs on a CC you can get a lower rate, maybe something like this applies -- never hurts to ask.

Please be sure that he is reported and does not get away with this. This breaks my heart!!!!!!

You need to report him to the local police and the Humane Society investigators, info on this link of what to do: http://www.mnhumane.org/report.html

    I am thinking about you!

That is awful!  I can't say I was a huge animal lover a year ago (though I'd never harm one), but I sure am now that we have our Wesley!  I'd kick the ass of anyone who messed with him.  The little boy who visits next door is no longer allowed to touch him without supervision, since he touched my dog inappropriately.

Not to say that this douchebag shouldn't be held responsible for what he did, but you said that he was in foster care with your FI.  I have to wonder if this abuse of Levi could have something to do with him being abused early in his life that fucked him up.  There's no excuse for violence, but I can see how this would be a special circumstance.  I wonder if psychiatric treatment would help him more than trying to put him in jail, where he most likely wouldn't receive the kind of help he really needs so that this never happens again.

I don't have any suggestions for paying that bill.  I wonder if there's some kind of animal charity that would help with medical bills due to maltreatment.  Doesn't the ASPCA and other rescue organzations do this, only for dogs without good homes?

Levi's such a cute little guy.  I'm glad that he's going to come through this.

I'm so sorry!  That is an awful situation...  Even if your fi's foster brother is family, I think an eviction is in order!  He should not be around if he is a danger to any member of your household.

I hopethe adorable Levi continues to improve and hope that the expense of the treatment can be spread out somewhat!  It really is a bit shady how they wanted to make you pay the entire amount up front without a payment plan.  Sending thoughts and prayers your way!

I agree with what everyone has said about turning him in and about using a 0% interest credit card. Definitely praying for your puppy! I know how hard it is to have a sick animal and not being able to do anything about it. I had to put down my puppy in Sept and it was the hardest thing I've ever done. Keep fighting for him and please keep us posted on his progress =(

OMG... I'm a little late reading this... but holy s***... I would want to tear that guy limb from limb if I were you.

    A) As people have said, definitely call the police. And the Humane Society. And maybe a friggin' lawyer.

    B) Did you ask the vet's office if they accept Care Credit? It's a credit card that is especially designed for medical expenses (human or veterinary) and every purchase you make with it has a 0% APR for the first 6 months (maybe even longer, I can't remember). Also, they have a tendency to be more generous with credit limits and post-grace-period APRs than traditional credit (I used to have an iffy credit score, so I know this for a fact.) If and when you take the a-hole to court, you can ask that he foot the bill.

That is definitely a day from hell. I know if anyone hurt Lucy, FI and I would beat them senseless. I too am incredibly sorry you and Jeff are going through this. No animal, or human for that matter deserves what was done to Levi :-(

I imagine that there are charges you could press against the foster brother, I sure as hell would if I were you! I too second a no interest credit card or care credit- most vets have a care credit program.
