I know I could post this on my local board but I also know there are a lot of people from New York on this board.

I have done lots of research on getting the marriage license but it is still keeping me up at night because we have to wait until the day before the wedding to both go in person to the town hall. Here is my question:

When you appear in person and fill out the application, are you issued the license immediately? I know that you have to wait 24 hours, which we are planning. But do they give you the piece of paper there on the spot that you need to get signed by your officiant?

Just trying to calm my nerves! Thanks!

Yes, I immediately got a license, which will need to be signed by my officiant and (two?) witnesses, and then mailed back. But when I went to the court house, I got what I needed there, and they didn't mail me anything.

They do, yes. And if they're anything like the office I went to, they'll show you exactly what needs to be filled out and what gets sent back. Technically what they give you is a declaration of your intent to marry. Then your witnesses and officiant sign off to verify that the marriage actually took place, the form gets returned, and they mail you your marriage certificate. Which is then what you need to change your name, if you plan on doing so. Hope that helped!

Just make sure that you and FI have your LONG FORM birth certificates if your location requires Birth Certificates- we had a hard time with that.... Some locations don't require them at all (NYC) but some do... and they can be picky about it. We had to go back to FMIL place and tear through all her paperwork to find the right one!

If you are getting married where you were both born, it shouldn't matter b/c they will have on file

We both have our birth certificates ready. But what is a long form birth certificate?
We were both born in NYS. Does that help?

I don't know about long form birth certificates. I do know that FI had to get a replacement for his because the original was lost and they wouldn't accept the certified copy without a raised seal on it. Honestly, the best thing to do if you have concerns about your documentation is just to call the office you'll be applying at and ask.

We only needed a regular birth cert and I was born in NYC, FI in upstate NY. We got the lntent paper in 15 minutes! We did this in Albany, NY. OF COURSE we noticed a mistake, they put down her married last name under "birth name" so we have to go back and get that fixed on Friday!
