When to do Engagement Photos?

My FI and I aren't planning to get married until Sept 2012, but due to his brother being active duty in the National Guard based on deployments and training we might have to push the wedding up. I don't want to do engagement photos too soon because I plan on loosing some weight before the wedding and want the engagement photos to kind of show that as well. What is the best time (like how many months before the wedding) to do engagement photos?

Do them whenever you want.  You can wait for the right season, weather, weight, whatever.  If you're going to send a photo with your announcement, you'll obviously want to get them done in time for them to be included.  If not, you can wait much longer.

Engagement photos are done mostly if you want to put a picture on your save the dates. So when are you sending your save the dates out? If you know you're moving it up, then the closest time frame I've had my clients do them is 2-3 months before the wedding with a very close invitation close by and an even closer RSVP date. If you're wedding is 6 months from now, doing it a month or two later is fine but remember, if you need to know a head count by a particular date, then you'll need to decide when to send your invitations out. Hope it all works out!

You can do them when ever you chose. Most couples usually do them around 12-5 months. It's just when ever you feel like doing them.

The earlier in the wedding planning process the better, because then you'll actually use the engagement photos. It seems like a lot of photographers offer engagment photos for free as part of their package, and it's a good idea. At first I thought the idea of engagement photos was a little unnecessary, but they give you a good idea of how the photograher works and what to expect the day of your wedding.

We were just so busy with the planning that we didn't bother to do much with the engagement photos by the time we got them (I posted a picture on Facebook but that was all). Now it's a month after our wedding and we have zillions of wedding photos to organize, so the engagement photos have kind of been forgotten (and they're great photos, so we should have used them more).
