Do you use your credit card to purchase things online?
I just got back from the bank to change my savings account over to a new savings account, and the guy who helped me noticed that I had purchased lots of stuff online and through paypal the last few months (WR of course!). He says when you use paypal, the person can see your credit limit - and mine is relatively high, at 7-thousand. He says it makes me more prone to ID theft and was trying to convince me to open a separate checking account for my online purchases.
It sounded like a major pain in the ass to me - and I've only ever used my credit card to buy things online. I've been doing it for years. Do you?
Re: Credit card question
I use my card online and have never had a problem. At one point, I had two cards though and one I used strictly for online purposes; it helped me make sure there was no fraud.
Sounds to me like that was a sales pitch so he could hit his new account quota. But I could be wrong?
I've never had a proble ordering online, but I do always make sure it's a secure site.
Anyways, I saw your post on FB about his comment. His choice of words would have annoyed me too.
When I was a poor college student, I was disputing a charge of about $36 after my debit card got stolen. I fought and fought with my bank. At one point, I was there and the person "helping" me tried to talk me into opening a savings account. They have a $300 minimum, and they charge you $30 for every month when you're below it.
I looked him in the eye and said "Dude, I have $14 in my account. I'm disputing $36 with you. Do I look like I have $300 to stick in your stupid savings account?!" He said, "Um....probably not?"
Then he helped me when I closed my account there, promptly after finally get my damn $36 from them. When he asked the reason I said "Because I had to fight wiith you for 10 weeks over THIRTY SIX DOLLARS and in the midst of that you tried to talk me into opening a savings account I couldn't afford, is that a good enough reason?"
I was past being nice at that point

Stacey - right!? On top of this checking account crap the guy was a douche bag. He was kinda hitting on me too. Gross.
[QUOTE]I have sold stuff through PayPal for years, and I have never seen anyone's credit limit. Snopes that shhiit.

So I did a little googling and they're all telling me that no, you can't see the credit limit unless they have your account password.
That douche.
I think banker boy has a new-account quota to meet.
[QUOTE]He sounds like a liar. I would call the bank and tell them he is a skeeze.

Ditto this. I would just present it as "Earlier this week I spoke to X who informed me that PayPal was not secure to use for online payments and encouraged me to open a secondary account with your bank. I spoke with Paypal and they assured me that his information was not valid and that they were secured. Are you aware that your associates are giving out faulty information?"
I did this with BBT when I deposited our house check. The lady was completely right, but the corporate associate I spoke to thanked me for double checking so that they are aware of what branch employees are doing.

+1, he was lying and deserves to be reported.
I run several businesses and we can't see customers' card limits, we can only authorize a card, or charge it.
In general, I'd recomend never using a debit card for anything online or really anything at all other than ATM access for that matter; if that card were to be compromised, banks can be a real bitch about reversing the charge in a timely manner and of course are more than happy to charge you bounced check fees if you were overdrawn between the time you noticed the issue and when they processed the chargeback for a fraudulent purchase.
There are a few credit card companies who allow you to generate one time use card numbers in their web portals, those are the absolute best for shopping online; basically you go to their website, log in, have it generate a card number for you and you've got maybe 30 or 60 minutes to use it, then that card number becomes invalid. So now if that website mishandles the card, gets broken into, etc., doesn't matter, the number was only good for one purchase. I think Citibank, Bank of America and Discover offer this service but not sure. I use a Mastercard tied to my Ameriprise retirement account that gives me 1.5% cash back into the retirement and they don't offer this service so it's been a while since I've used one.
