Registries 101

Hey ladies...

Registry talk has been hot here as of late. Obviously, we're not ready to put together a registry yet (no plans to do so until the fall anyways), but FI and I are starting to look into places to set up registries, as well as what items we might want to put on them. To be honest, I know the basic items (pots, pans, silverware, etc.), but I would appreciate any advice/input for ladies who are in the process or already out of it (or, hell, if you're NEY and familiar with kitchen gadgets and decorating).

So, here's my questions for you...

1.) Where did you/do you plan to set up your registries? Any recommendations/stay away froms?

2.) Five things that you feel every new bride needs to start off her home right (double points for pics).

3.) Your favorite registry items, or the ones you look most forward to recieving?

3.) What are some things that the magazines/Knot tells you to get, but you really don't need?

4.) Name a total splurge/fun item that you don't need, but you put it (or are putting it on) your registry anyways?

Any of our marrieds or soon-to-be-marrieds can answer (of course), but if you're NEY and have something to recommend, feel free. Double points for pictures, triple points for pictures and links.

For me creating a registry was not nearly as fun as I was anticipating it being. It has more so become a headache and I hope it is as complete as it needs to be with only being at Target and Macy's.

I went during a Macy's registry event. My FI and I didn't care for that because they pretty much had every employee at the store working and as soon as you walked into a section it felt like they were hounding you. IF you glanced at an item you got a speil about it. You felt like you couldn't walk away because they kept talking and talking and talking. A few times I thought they were going to take the registry gun from FI and start registering stuff for us. I wanted us to be able to meander around talk about items between us. At this event it was seriously impossible. We both felt like we needed a few drinks afterwards. Not what I thought registering would feel like. Maybe it was just that one event. Maybe it was just that store.

I am looking forward to receiving a patio set. We have a tiny little table with 2 chairs currently.

I would say register at stores that most of your guests can access by going to the store. Personally I never buy gifts online. Call me crazy I know, but I live by a bajillion Targets and don't see the point of paying shipping.

I say include a variety of price points. That way all guests should feel comfortable buying something off your registry.

We did BBB, Macy's and Dillards - we only did Dillards because they also carried our China in store and we had a lot of people on our guest list that didn't feel comfortable ordering it online from BBB. I hear a lot that Target is a place to stay away from but I have no experience with them

2.) Five things that you feel every new bride needs to start off her home right (double points for pics).
All of mine are kitchen related
Kitchenaid stand mixer - I cannot tell you how much I love mine
Good set of pots and pans - we had a mix and match set forever so we registered for a Calpholon set and it makes a difference when you're pots aren't so warped when cooking. Well I think it does atleast
Cooking utensils!! - This may just be me but I get so frustrated when I don't have the right tools to cook with.
Crockpot - I love this thing - I can put something in there in the morning and right about dinner time it's ready with no fuss
Dishes - Well of all of that other stuff is kind of useless without something to serve it on right? I have a very colorful collection of fiestaware that I *love*. Now if I could just find the big salt and pepper shakers that I want

3.) Your favorite registry items, or the ones you look most forward to recieving?
The kitchenaid mixer - I love that thing. I was excited about all the other kitchen stuff too but the mixer definitely tops the list

3.) What are some things that the magazines/Knot tells you to get, but you really don't need?
I don't really know - I didn't read magazines or read what the knot says about it

4.) Name a total splurge/fun item that you don't need, but you put it (or are putting it on) your registry anyways?
We pretty much stuck to stuff that we needed but we registered for all of the mixer accessories and actually ended up getting a few but we totally didn't need them.

Thanks for the insight, loopy. A few people have recommended Macys, but to be honest, there's not really a whole lot I would want from there, and the items I would want are cheaper at BB&B or Target.

We have no plans of registering during one of those events. If I had someone hounding me about items, I'd probably clock them with the radar gun. I'm with you on wanting to be able to look at items and talk them over with my FI.

For us, the big thing is provide a variety of affordable options. We want a good price range, so people can spend whatever they are able to/are comfortable with, whether that be $5 or $500. I can't imagine putting many big ticket items on our registry, but then I saw how much a decent set of pots and pans can run and damn near threw up.

We're definitely planning on registering at BB&B, due to the fact that they have a huge selection, their prices are reasonable, and you can find a BB&B pretty much anywhere you live. As for other places, we're considering Crate & Barrel and Kohls. If IKEA had a registry service, I'd be in big trouble with that little registry gun.

I've also heard some sketchy things about Target, like items not getting taken off the registry and people getting 3 of each when they asked for 1. Also, their stock overturns so much, I have a friend that had redo her registry three times in the span of six months.

I don't think having a few big ticket items is a bad idea. You never know who may come out of the woodwork feeling incredibly generous.

Also it gives people something to go in on. For a while I was always going in on gifts with friends. I don't know if that is common, or a more regional thing.

I do like the variety of C&B - the fact you can get furniture or kitchen utensils. I love love love some of their stemware.

In regards to Target being a pain with registries, I have heard they have gotten a lot better and revised their policies because they were getting such a bad rap about it. I haven't had to deal with it yet, so I can't speak on personal experience.

I also couldn't believe how much pots & pans were.

Oh and a bonus about Macy's is that sometimes it is set up that if you register for X $ amount with certain brands you can mail in your registry and they will mail you a free gift. We did that with a few different companies. The gift items were pretty nice.

Good point. I could see some relatives going in on a bigger item. To be honest, we don't need much in the way of furniture, so our big ticket items will likely be a good pot/pan set, good knife set, etc. I don't know...even though I know my family and know they'll want to get us nice things to start our lives together, I've always felt uncomfortable about people spending a lot of money on me. My parents practically had to threaten me to get me to accept $$ from them for the wedding. ..it wasn't until my dad told me that he'd be offended and his feelings would be hurt if I didn't let him help that I said ok.

Except...

...my mom has made some heavy hints at possibly getting us a dining set from IKEA for our wedding gift. I'm keeping my fingers seriously crossed, as right now, our dining table consists of two card tables with a table cloth thrown over them, and it would be kinda fun to have a pretty cabinet to put our nice/fishy dishes in.

1) The usuals: Target, Macy's, BB&B, and Crate and Barrel.

2) a. Good pots and pans. I like the All-Clad (it's what we use now) but OMG I had no idea they were so expensive. The set below is $1300!!!

b. Wooden cooking utensils. They are the BEST for cooking almost anything. IMO.

c. A coffee and/or espresso maker.

d. Wine cooler and full sets of wine/champagne/cocktail glass. And a wine cooler too. That's one item right?

e. At least one full matching dish set. Nice or casual. As long as it matches.

3. All of the things I listed above that I feel are necessary are the things I want most. But I'd also really like a nice tea set

4. I don't know if magazines or the Knot says to get it, but I feel like everyone wants a Kitchen-Aid thing. I can't see myself ever using that.

5. The espresso maker would be a total splurge. They're ridiculously expensive. But FFIL is Italian so if he ever plans on visiting us I'm sure he'll want us to have a good one

Oh and I really want one of those towel warming racks. FI thinks it's ridiculous but if we're moving back north after we get married I want one. Maybe even if we don't.

I wish IKEA had a registry! I effing love IKEA for all of the random stuff like dishes, lamps, shelves...

We also just helped FFIL refurnish his house and got a lot of furniture from IKEA. The bedroom furniture is really great and we got this buffet (and I thought only my Gram called them that) that I LOVE. And bookshelves. All dark wood (I love that table by way Oceana, we considered getting that as well). And actually I might just steal everything when we get our own house. Shhh...

I know, I love that table, especially the fact that's easily expandible and the leaves are already built in. Our big thing with a table is we want one that we can use for everyday, but that will be big enough to accomodate us and both sets of parents when we start hosting holidays in FL.

Not gonna lie, seriously considering getting this for FI for his birthday, if I get a bonus at work in time:

Last time we went to IKEA, it literally took me 20 min to get him out of this thing.

1.) We registered at BB&B, Macy's and Pottery Barn. I would have also registered at Crate&Barrel, but none are near either of our hometowns. I have heard negative things about Target's return policy (although some people say it's fine... nonetheless, we chose not to do it there.) You know my real name, so feel free to look me up on any of them for ideas!! (BTW, I've been doing an EXCELLENT job at not sneak peeking.... i really want to. My first shower invites went out a few weeks ago! YAY!)

2.) a nice vaccuum, a stand mixer, a decent set of flatware, a nice set of dishes (does not have to be china, but something you could use for Christmas dinner in 15 years... IMO, your DH isn't going to want to spend all that money on dishes then, so ask for it now) and an espresso maker (hehe, personal opinion) Also, FI was adament about us registering for a paper shredder. I think it will come in handy. And a nice set of knives. Luggage.

Also: entertaining equipment (ex. carafe)

3.) Your favorite registry items, or the ones you look most forward to recieving?
- Ice Cream Maker
- BBQ accessories (roasting veggies, fish, etc. special grilling accessories)

- camping tent!! and sleeping bags
- our nice dishes and matching servingware

3.) What are some things that the magazines/Knot tells you to get, but you really don't need?
My personal opinions:
- Getting a full set of 5 different kinds of stemware (who needs 12 wine glasses, 12 martini glasses, 12 brandy glasses, 12 margarita glasses, 12... you get the picture)
- China. You don't NEED it if you don't WANT it.
- big pieces of furniture like a couch (who would buy this for someone??)
- stuff you know you won't use (if you don't plan on entertaining, there's a lot you don't need)

4.) Name a total splurge/fun item that you don't need, but you put it (or are putting it on) your registry anyways?
- a bed and breakfast tray
- a leather ottoman trunk for living room

- nightstand tables

- coat/umbrella stand
- Popcorn maker!
- TV trays

- cool phone

- extra bedding for our guest room (pillows, mattress cover, sheets, etc.)

to play devil's advocate, I had a great Macy's experience! We didn't go to an event, just popped in one evening and signed up. We also did our full registry early on a Sat morning to beat the crowd and we weren't pestered at all. We got most of our appliances at BB&B bc of the coupon, but found a lot I really like at Macy's (I also have a slight obsession with Martha Stewart... maybe that's why...

)

Also, you get 10% of your total registry purchases on a gift card at the end. Not a bad perk!

Oceana - my FI has that chair! He LOVES it!! It's sturdy too! It lasted 4 years of college boys schlepping around in it, and it still looks great!

1.) Where did you/do you plan to set up your registries? Any recommendations/stay away froms?
We're registered at BBB (main registry), Target (fill-in random stuff and fun things), Pottery Barn (furniture, specialty items and linens), and Williams-Sonoma (my All-Clad cookware and couple cookbook sets). So far so good with all of them. We live in a small town, and were able to set up all our registries really easily online since none of those stores are within 50 miles of us.

I've had some issues with stuff being out of stock/discontinued quite frequently at BBB, but it's relatively easy to find replacement items most of the time. They have been less than stellar about keeping track of ordered pieces of china, both for me and a friend of mine. You have to tell them to update it sometimes once it's purchased.

I had a lot of people tell me to stay away from Target, but really I haven't had any issues with them, whether it was doing our registry or shopping off a registry for someone else.

2.) Five things that you feel every new bride needs to start off her home right (double points for pics).

For the record, these can also be considered among some of my favorite registry items, but pictures of ALL my favorites (and there are a ton besides these) are at the bottom.

1. Kitchenaid Mixer - Kitchenaid Artisan Stand Mixer in Lemongrass

2. Quality Cookware (I took Mutley suggestion on All-Clad d5 LTD2 from WS and added a nonstick electric griddle as well)

3. Dishes, a matching "grown-up" set - we went with Regency 32-piece set from BBB

4. New sheets - Grand Patrician from BBB, chocolate for the master bed, white for all guest beds so we can bleach the f*ck out of them (no pun intended).

5. New towels - Soho towels from BBB. LOVE.

3.) Your favorite registry items, or the ones you look most forward to recieving?
Pictures at bottom, plus the ones above this. I want to try and keep the pictures together without making you hunt for text.

4.) What are some things that the magazines/Knot tells you to get, but you really don't need?
I was told to get nice flatware and casual flatware, and I refused. I only registered for 18/10 stainless. It's the nicest stuff out there. I saw no point in registering for things I was going to have to replace (hence the really nice cookware). We chose Kate Spade Union Street from BBB.

5.) Name a total splurge/fun item that you don't need, but you put it (or are putting it on) your registry anyways?

A ton. Some of them are actually in my favorites, which will be shown....NOW! And yes, some of my favorite items are way expensive and only on the registry so we can buy them with the completion discount. They are no less my favorites because of their price.

You NEED very NICE, QUALITY versions of the following:

towel/washcloth sets (more than you think you'll need)

2 sets of sheets (at least 400 thread count, but the higher the count the longer they'll last- get more if you have a guest room)

pots/pans (we didn't register for a set- I mixed and matched several pieces in different sizes that I know will come in handy as our family grows)

matching dinnerware (it doesn't have to be fancy, but it needs to be really good, quality stuff that won't chip after 3 years like my friend's has)

flatware (it's expensive, but shoot for 18/10 stainless steel. 18/0 is crap, and if the set doesn't say, don't bother getting it. This has to do with how durable it is, how much it is likely to scratch or rust, and so on)

Get service for 8 at least! 12 if you like entertaining.

We're registered at Target (no problems yet), JC Penney (they seem to turn over more than Target has!), Williams-Sonoma, and Crate & Barrel (that one's all your fault, lol).

I am looking forward to...... everything! lol. I feel like a little kid on Christmas Eve!

You don't need SILVER silverware. Stainless is more practical and easier to care for, and cheaper. I have no idea why magazines and such say you need silver. If you get really good quality stainless, it'll be around forever.

We don't need those dahlia napkin rings.... I wasn't even going to GET napkin rings. But SOMEONE posted a picture, and that's the flower that will be all over our wedding.... and I couldn't resist. Totally frivolous, but I love them. And they're the reason I registered at Crate & Barrel.

Any recommendations/stay away froms? We are doing JCPenney - because i work there and i am biased , lol ! , Target and Kohls. i don't like BBB , it's just too pricey for my taste - me and FI are super easy going people and i cannot stand Macys - way too pushy and thats why i denied a job there , just not for me.

2.) Five things that you feel every new bride needs to start off her home right (double points for pics).

Good sheets - 400 count minimum usually - Egyptian cotton are wonderful and durable and wash beautifully. Don't be fooled just by thread count though - some 600 plus thread count sheets in one place can be barely 200 at another - it does depend on how they are made and the quality so do your research.

Several sets of towels - in all different varieties and colors - this includes for the kitchen too !

GOOD pots and pans - they don't have to be 1300 ones , lol , but think about how often they will be used and what you prefer. Is nonstick interior important or would you prefer stainless ? Know what you like and what works for your life not just what looks nice

Dinnerware and silverware - can never have enough - china is always a great investment as well.

A kitchen aid mixer - seriously even if you think you will barely use it you will find ways to use it ! They also offer so many different attachments it is amazing !

3.) Your favorite registry items, or the ones you look most forward to recieving?

Not sure who will even be able to get us anything so not really worried about that honestly. i'm more concerned with people showing up right now , lol.

3.) What are some things that the magazines/Knot tells you to get, but you really don't need?

Top of the line everyhting. Seriously , find stuff that fits into YOUR life , not some magazines.

Not sure yet really - we still need alot , lol !

You all have successfully talked me into wishing for a Kitchenaid mixer. I think what pushed me over the edge was going shopping with rickylee tonight and having her show me how pretty they are and how many fun attachments you can get to go with them...homemade ice cream?!? SOLD! lol

FI and I need to go to the various stores and take a look around at what we want and what's important to us in terms of housewares, but I'm thinking we'll end up registering at BB&B, Crate & Barrel, and Kohls (went there tonight with ricky to look for fish bowls for a friend of ours...holy housewares selection, Batman!).

taft - I second you on getting what fits your life, versus the top of the line. We entertain and have house guests quite often, so having unique serving and entertaining pieces and extra guest items (towels, sheets, etc.) is a big thing. I recieved some quality basic white everyday china from my grandmother last year, so our priorities in terms of dishware is finding a few colored or patterned pieces we can mix and match with the basic white, versus getting entire new sets. We'll never use fine china or crystal stemware, so that would be a waste for us.

Personally, I like nonstick pots/pans in terms of how easily they wash and how long they last if you wash them properly. I've heard really good things about Calphalon (?)...any other recs?

jeanna - Thanks for the heads up on the stainless steel...I had never heard about that before! We'll be sure to look for SS utensils...we entertain a lot (ie. we'll want 12 place settings), but we want to find pretty universal settings that we can use for everyday and formal occasions. That's my big thing in terms of my dishware/silverware/decor - simple, classic things that you can dress up and dress down.

acro - our friend has the Al-Clad electric nonstick grill (similar to your griddle) and it's FANTASTIC. He's lent it to us several times to make skirt steaks and they come out perfect. Those wine/app plates from PB makes me almost want to register there...lol.

PPs have said a lot of what I would have said so I'm going to try and not repeat.

We are doing Target and JC Penney. So far so good but I will say that Penneys was kind of a pain only because we went and registered for a bunch of things and they didn't show up online or in the store. They said it could take 24 hours. 26 hours later I checked and they still weren't there so I called and the girl apologized and said they should be there by now and that I might want to re-register. I got sick that day so didn't go out and redo the whole thing. I'm glad I didn't because it all showed up 2 days later. This also happened to my friend who registered a week before us except she did go back and redo it all and then had 2 of everything.

If you do decide to use Penneys just know that this might happen and don't freak out like I did!

Ditto on the KitchenAid, sheets, towels, plates, and flatware.

There are a couple more pieces that match. I just think they are cool!

China. If you want it, great, but I really don't see a need for it. My mom and grandma have theirs in china cabinets but haven't used them really ever. Plus you have to hand wash it all. If I'm entertaining, I don't want to be stuck in the kitchen hand washing everything.

That being said, I inherited my other grandmother's china so if I was to change my mind, I have a set. It currently sits in storage at my parents' house since we don't have a dinning room or anywhere to put a china cabinet.

4.) Name a total splurge/fun item that you don't need, but you put it (or are putting it on) your registry anyways?
Pretty much all of the stuff I'm most looking forward too!

I also upgraded to stainless steel measuring cups/spoons. I had registered for plastic, but then I got to thinking.... why? They're more expensive, but stainless will likely last me a hell of a lot longer. As in, I could be baking cookies with my grandkids with the same measuring cups and spoons if I get stainless.

My mom is convinced that I won't get anything from my registry because she never buys from registries. She said "Well, don't be disappointed if you just get money."

Uhh, disappointed to get money? What is WRONG with the people around me lately?

Of course, she also thinks we're "registering for weird things" because I let FI register for Windows 7 and a couple of board games last night. But guess what? It really made him feel more involved. I told him he could register for ANYTHING he wanted if it would get him even a tiny bit stoked about the wedding.

Hey, if someone buys us Windows 7, great! If not, we'll get 10% off later.

Oh yeah, you definitely need two sets of sheets/towels per room. I forgot about that.

But I'm still not sold on the Kitchen Aid.

Jeanna, I love the Windows 7 on the registry. I told FI he could put whatever he wanted on our registry(s) and all he apparently wants is a) a new coffeemaker with a timer, b) something to make pancakes on, and c) a frying pan that's heavy enough to kill an intruder with.

Thanks ladies! I love these lists and I will definitely come back to this post when the time comes! If I tell FI he can register what he REALLY REALLY wants we'd be going to Best Buy and registering for a TV. Is that bad? haha. We don't NEED it, but he talks about it EVERYDAY!

1.) Where did you/do you plan to set up your registries? Any recommendations/stay away froms?
Williams-Sonoma, Macy's and Target
Williams-Sonoma - for our pots/pans and specialty cookware items
Macy's - easy to register, easy to update
Target was fine with us about returns. Their stock does turn over quickly. However, it was the easiest store the majority of our guests to get to, so we figured why not.

2.) Five things that you feel every new bride needs to start off her home right (double points for pics).
a) Great pots/pans
All-Clad Ltd

b) Quality knife set

c) Slow Cooker/Steamer/Rice Cooker - all in one!

d) Large Capacity Food Processor

e) Plates and silverware service for at least 8 (be it nice china or everyday - something that matches)

3.) Your favorite registry items, or the ones you look most forward to recieving?
I already had a KitchenAid Mixer and a Dyson. I brought them into the relationship. Those would have been on the top of my list.
My favorite registry items were my pots/pans and the knife set. We also use the rice cooker/steamer/slow cooker at least once a week.

3.) What are some things that the magazines/Knot tells you to get, but you really don't need?
The entire list of everything. Take stock of what you have and what you do. There is no point in getting $$$ pots/pans when you truly do not cook and have no interest in doing so. Also, there is no point in getting lots of china if you don't entertain.
We didn't register for towels or sheets. We have enough of each. Plus I like to redecorate every so often. I get quality towels and sheets at Marshalls or Ross once or twice a year.

4.) Name a total splurge/fun item that you don't need, but you put it (or are putting it on) your registry anyways?
We didn't register for anything like that. I guess you could consider my cake plates as splurges, but since I've used them more than once a month since the wedding I don't.

Not WR, but we have started our baby registry. We even made our first big baby purchase. (Almost 40% off at a local store's sale this past weekend.
