what is your favorite...

Christmas cookie? My mom brought me some finely chopped hazelnuts that I'm going to use instead of walnuts for jam thumbprint cookies. I'm also going to try my hand at macarons, but need some further inspiration.

  • I love the crackle top cookies.  With powdered sugar on top, I have no idea what they are called.
  • The Hershey kiss peanut butter cookie.
  • Either my mom's hersey kiss surprise cookies of those cheap sugar cookies in a bag.

  • Ooh, my grandmother used to do the Russian Wedding Cakes (only she called them sand tarts) in a crescent shape. Great idea, B! I can teach my daughters how to make them, too.
  • My favourite christmas stuff is butter tarts and soft ginger cookies.

    Dear God, I love these.
And good ol' sugar cookies. In Christmas shapes...with lots of icing and sprinkles, because I'm 5.
  • I prefer bar cookies at Christmas, particularly if they contain caramel and chocolate.

Yes these.  Or snickerdoodles.  I also really love buckeyes.  I know they're not cookies, but they are awesome.

  • Okay all your posts reminded me of my other faves:
Buckeyes (which we call deer balls for some reason), butter tarts, and just the plain old cut-outs.  I also am a frosting lover.

I knew someone was going to ask ;)

I'll have to dig it up. I copied it from one of my mom's cookbooks and keep misplacing it It's out of a book called "Rose's Christmas Cookies" if that helps. But basically it's an almond shortbread and the filling is your basic buttercream, but with rum replacing about half of the vanilla. Or you can make it tipsier if you prefer. :D
  • Is it one of those recipes like in the email forwards where you keep drinking the rum and by the end you're drunk?
    image
  • Homemade sugar cookies you cut out with Christmas cookie cutters & ice your self:D (nostalgic, I know).
    image
  • ZOMG! I found it faster on google than I could have searching for my handwritten copy.

    It's this:

    http://www.food.com/recipe/butter-rum-sandwich-cookies-72244

Except I use almonds instead of pecans and I fiddle with the filling until it's the texture I want. IMO it's usually a little runny, so I add powdered sugar until it's more stable.

I made and decorated 12 dozen of these last year for work and family. I'll probably make them again this year, but not that many.

I volunteered to make all the Christmas desserts this year--so there will be a lot of these cookies!   And I'll probably be stealing some ideas from this thread too :)
I made a whole bunch last year for our rehearsal dinner too, since our wedding was 6 days before Christmas.  I love making Christmas cookies!
