the name game...

i need some advice ladies... my fi and i are having a bit of a naming issue. he absolutely loathes his last name, it doesn't bother me at all. he would really like to take my name. i am my fathers only child therefore our family name ends with me. i've always really loved my last name and wouldn't mind keeping... i'm really just worried how the whole thing will be perceived if he takes my last name. be honest ladies... i can take it.

thanks!!

  • If your Fi wants to take your name, go for it! And don't be concerned with what people think.  If the two of you agree and are happy with it, that is all that matters!

  • You are so lucky! I would LOVE it if my husband took my name (which is much more unique and AWESOME than his, lol).

We have different names now, because there's no way I'd ever give mine up.

And I do know a man who took his wife's last name. I have no issue with it, and never heard anyone talk about it.

I always say that when a woman is faced with the name change issue, she's the one who has to sign whatever it is "for as long as you both shall live". I really don't see how it's any different with the guy. If he wants to take your name, who cares?

  • Hi Everyone,

Neither my fiance or I dislike our names, but we will hyphenate the two and both change our names.....for example, mine is Smith, his is Jones, and we will both be Smith-Jones.

I've always thought it would be wonderful to share my name with my soul mate, but also wanted to share his...and I was pleasantly surprised when he said he liked the idea!

I agree with all of the above posters. Do what is going to work and feels right to you. If this causes family issues, talk it out with them, but ultimately, its going to be your name, not theirs.

Some people probably will think its weird or wrong... but F them!

    Your life. Your name.
  • No matter what you do, there's always gotta be some jerk to judge.  If you changed your name to his, there's going to be people commenting on that, too, or if you had separate names, or if you hyphenated or combined them or whatever.

You know, I have a friend who's parents INVENTED their last name!  They both shared his last name, which was something very run-of-the-mill -- later they were so moved by the Redwood trees on a trip to California that they just changed their name to Redwood.

I read online that some guy changed his name to just "Spock."

My overall point?  Do what you want.  This is America, right?
