[QUOTE]Here are some cheaper DB options.  I think when it comes to the ball, you just want to be really simple, and elegant. Of the ones that you posted I think that the white one is really nice.. Clicky Clicky Clicky Clicky Clicky

you dont think those dresses were simple enough? i mean i like dresses that have fabric detail mostly so they arent hugely dramatic also cause very very plain straight dresses  dont really fit my figure well... but u like the white one? my friends and i are thinking on the first one... thanks for ur input =]

Well, what kind of figure do you have? I mean, I'm curvy, so straight dresses don't look great on me either.  You could go for kind of an A-Line, but you don't want to wear anything that's really poufy.. Like I was saying to Her Royal Highness (OP), you really want to compliment your Marine, so I would avoid lots of flourishes.. It's not a Prom, it's a Military Ball.. KWIM?

(See that Nannaxxshark... She came one here without an preconceived notion that anyone was going to bite her head off, and everyone's been quite pleasant & helpful towards her.  This is really a great group of ladies, that sad for you, you're to busy with your assumptions, to get to know.  You get back what you put out there, Princess.)

This made me giggle. SamiJoe, I hope you have a Southern accent, because there's no way I can hear that statement without the Southern drawl in that. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />

Even with all the drama going on in this thread, I'm going to post this because I don't feel like starting yet another Marine Corps Ball post.

This is going to be my first time to actually be able to attend the Ball, and I'm a little nervous about my dress. I found this one that I really like:

I'm a little worried though, because I'm rather large up top... What do you girls think?

Darlin of course I do!!! You can't be born and raised in the south without one<img style="width:18px;height:18px;" src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />  I'm glad another Belle got my "bless your heart" reference!

Annnd.. I think that dress is beautiful!!!  I would totally rock that at the ball!! Very classy & elegant & Gorgeous!! Excellent taste my dear!  I'm pretty busty myself, and I always feel super confident in a halter!! If it's loose at all up top, I would suggest getting some of that double sided tape that sticks to your skin and your dress just to avoid any unnecessary exposure!  You can get it at like Target for about $15...  Seriously though.. I loovvee that dress!

melbel- I'm large too and have discovered that (at least for me) halters tend to minimize the ladies so I think you're golden if you like it! If you're iffy and close to one, just run in and try it on! :)

WOW... I missed some serious stuff. You ladies aren't allowed to have such an active board on the ONE Friday I'm not bored and home.. jeebus... :P

i do want to compliment him but i wanna also look special for him too because we dont get to see each other as often as we hope not because he's deployed right now but because i only usually get to see him twice a year if we r lucky... i kno many of you ladies kno what its like to be away from the man u love and to wanna look good for him when you do get to see him... im not saying look flashy but just nice and presentable and elegant while still purchasing something i would wear again to make it a reasonable purchase, you kno? i looked through thousands of gowns to find ones that were sleek and everything i believe it should be for such an important event such as this... i just wanna kno that they look presentable and respectful cause the last thing i would ever wanna do is disrespect my fiance or the MC birthday celebration
    Thanks again.

Irish-You are tooo funny! I found you on Pinterest!!! Yay!! and I loooooovvve that DB dress you mentioned.. LOOOOVVVEEE It!

Sally- I completely understand.  It will have been 13 1/2 months when I see my H again, so I understand where you're coming from on that end.  I think that the fact that you're in formal wear (I'm guessing that you don't get to dress up like this every time you get to see him) you'll already look special for him.  I tend to try to steer people away from "trendy" dress purchases, because like you said, you want to be able to wear it again.  Like the Mullett dresses (Short in the front, long in the back), Princess dresses, Dramatic one shoulder dresses (I love one shoulder dresses, but the like extreme pouf on the one shoulder ya know).  For the Ball I would stay away from animal prints, sequins, shiny satiny all over fabric (looks cheap, and if in black always always reminds me of a hefty bag), lots of ruffles, and innapropriate sheerness.  One poster mentioned remarks that Marines will make to each other, and My H tells me every year that some SO's go to the Ball looking like "total skanks", and he'll hear higher ups saying "I can't belive that Marine lets his wife go out in public like that".  Do you want your dress to be a big suprise? because if you do, maybe send him a bunch of pics that are similar to your dress and see what he says, if you're okay with him seeing it, then show him a pic of you in it and ask him what he thinks?  HTH

    @ sami

Thanks for the advice! its helpful and im sry u wont get to see ur husband for that long i kno it stinks. i dont dress up like this all that often so im excited to. i kno about that last red dress the one thats short in the front and long in the back... i pretty much cut it out of my list after i posted it here, i thought i liked it but not so much anymore... the white one is nice like you ladies have been saying but wont people think its weird for someone to be wearing white? idk ive talked to my fiance about white dresses and he thinks that my wedding gown should really be the only white dress lmbo! so i guess that leaves the first and the third one... any opinions on those? lol i kno im being kinda rediculous here but i dont wanna make a mistake and have to let him hear the stuff people could say i just want us to have a good experience... and as far as sending him a pic lol i cant really he is in a place that doesnt really have contact much but ill see what i can come up with... out of the two i mentioned earlier, im leaning towards the first one in either blue or red idk yet... opinions?
    thanks

I think they were saying that they liked the dress, not necessarily that color. You could always get it in another color. I also like the first one too, so 1 and 2 would be my top choices for you.

I know that Stan mentioned that people often assume that if you go to the ball in a white dress that you're just repourposing your JOP/VR/Wedding dress (That would never have even crossed my mind!)  So that one in maybe another color?  I really like the mermaid dress, but only at like certain angles... in some of the extra photos I think it comes off kind weird.  I think my favorite now is the first one.  and I like it in both colors, but I personally know that with my coloring red looks good on me, so I'd so go with the red.  Are you going to order it online? If so make sure you check out their return policy.  Whenever I've ordered online, I usually have tried it on or worn it before, so just make sure that like if it's too big, or too small that they'll exchange it or give you a refund! Have you looked at any local stores?  Like I said, I'm sooo weird about online shopping just for size reasons.  I can wear an 8 at AE, but at Banana Republic, I'm a 6.  Formal wear generally runs kinda small too..  If you have like a Nordstroms or Macy's near you, it might be worth it to go and try on some dresses there.. You never know! You could find an amazing deal!! and thennn you wouldn't have to pay extra for shipping!! Oh! and try a David's Bridal if there's one close to you as well.  You might even be able to find this same dress at a shop near you and then you wouldn't have to worry if it didn't fit quite right.. Ya know? Sorry.. I'm such a worry wart.Tongue out  The first one in red is my vote!

This sounds like the thoughts that would run through my head. I worry way too much about clothes fitting right... I've never been able to order something online because of that. Well, that and the fact that I have problems with my body image, but that's not the point.

Anyway, Sally, I hope you find a dress that you like! Blue and red are both good options, so go with whichever you think looks better on you!
