Bridezillas

Is anyone else good and sick of the show "Bridezillas"? I watched the whole last season and a few reruns since, but I think there are two issues with it:

1. Most of this stuff is pure theatre. It is absolutely overplayed drama, I think from start to finish. Another example of "reality" TV that is anything but.

2. It has given so many people the idea that every bride is a "Bridezilla" waiting to  happen, and that any argument between the bride and anyone else to do with a wedding must be all the bride's fault.

Aside from the generally over the top ridiculousness of the show, I have in real life seen some scary behavior on the part of bridal parties, families, vendors, grooms... The bride is not always to blame. Granted, there are some serious Princess/Queen Bee/All Around Nasty Bitch Brides out there, but just saying.

Then finaally, I have to ask would anyone sit around and laugh about a bunch of men behaving this badly? I am not even sure why I wonder that, but I do. Women as out-of-control-bitches-from-hell. Hmmm... Maybe lots of viewers (mostly women) are getting their hate on the high school mean girls fix?

Anyway, bluck. The whole thing finally made me like My Fair Wedding. At least everyone is well behaved there.

  • I was over it before it ever aired.  I think those shows condone that type of behavior and teach the world it's okay.  I won't support that at all.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I was just ranting about Bridezillas in another thread.

Yeah, it's pretty much... stupid.  Who are these people, anyway, that consent to being taped when they're acting like complete asshats.  Of course it's theatre, but what self-respecting woman would want to be portrayed as the bride from hell on national television?

And I don't run into it too often - but once in a while someone will make a comment about myself or another one of my soon to be wed friends that we're "bridezillas in the making," it's always in jest but still.  It's like, why would my choice about something in my wedding turn me into a bridezilla?  So I want to wear ivory instead of diamond white.  I guess that makes me a bridezilla uber bitch.

I can only take wedding related shows a little at a time, though, I will admit.  Sometimes I'll watch Cake Boss to get cake ideas, but then I get irritated at how the guy freaks out all the time.  I get pissed at Say Yes to the Dress when a pushy mom or hoards of bridesmaids and friends come in and weigh in on what the bride should or should not wear.  And with Bridezillas... well... I'm usually annoyed from the get-go.  These shows make me really indifferent to weddings and planning my wedding, sometimes.

    Boo you, Briiiiiidezillas!

  • Ive seen all of the bridezillas. To me its like the wedding verion of Jersey Shore. I can't help but watch in disbelief.

I hate David Tutera and his awful feather and crystal centerpieces. His attitude just turns me off.

  • I love it, it's entertaining whether or not it's all for the camera.  Actually, one of the girls was on probation when she filmed her episode and the judge handling her case saw it.  The judge said her behavior on the show was in violation of her probation and she went to jail for a couple of days.
I agree that it's clearly not always the bride and most of the time, I blame the parents for being so permissive in the first place, and I blame the husbands for handing over their balls in a glass jar.
That being said, that one girl who called herself Queen Brown was taking money from her ex-husband saying it was for the kids and using it to finance her wedding.  That is disgusting, evil and beyond Bridezilla-ish.

  • I do, however, think that TLC is grooming some future Bridezillas for WE by filming Toddlers and Tiaras. Same thing. different age group.

  • My friend and I have a theory that the reason for much of the bridezilla-ness is the fact that they don't choose the best/most reliable vendors.

No wonder you want to pull your hair out and are having arguments with them . . . they are crappy vendors and you're cheap!

I watched the first season on DVD a few years ago and it didn't use to be this bad.  It's definitely escalated over the past few years.  And some of them have to be doing it for the pubilcity and 15 minutes of fame.

Regardless, I love it!  And it shows FI just how good he has it!

  • Just the word 'bridezilla' makes me furious.  In any other realm of life, a strong, assertive woman is a POSITIVE thing.  If a woman is strong and assertive with something wedding-related, people throw out that she's a 'bridezilla.'  Argh.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Isn't this the way with most reality TV, the worse your behavior the more attention you get?

As for David, I met him last year during a wedding event our Mall puts on, and he was stuck up. Barely said a word to anyone. And really I had to explain to most our vendors coming in who he was.
This year our celebrity is Ron Ben-Israel. We'll see how he acts.

  • Jenny, I agree with you 100%, however I think we can agree that these women are beyond assertive.  I mean, if you were the boss, and someone handed you a finished project that didn't meet with your approval, would you throw it on the ground and stomp on it to get your point across?

  • I saw only part of one episode, where the bride was tearing her veil apart because it was the wrong color (it looked fine to me, but whatever) and it was like just minutes before she was supposed to walk down the aisle. Well, I assume so, as she was in her dress as the church. I got a good laugh over her stupidity, but I don't think I could handle an entire episode.

I had an instant where I was called a bridezilla because someone was trying to invite 4 extra people 'just because they were family.' Never mind the fact that they are family I never, ever wish to see or speak to again. When I put my foot down, I was a bridezilla. Well, fvck you too, I'll take bridezilla over pushover in this case.

I too hate the word. Standing up for yourself is not being a bridezilla.

Ah.  This is true, I should probably have written my post better and explained that I have never seen an episode of the show, I was just commenting on the phrase in general.

  • The one that ripped her veil to shreds (which was her least offensive act on the show) wanted to go to Tahiti or Borabora and the AIR FARE ALONE was like, $9,000 PER PERSON.  And her dopey, schmucky, assface of a husband (who had already married and divorced her once) actually booked the trip.

Oh yeah, her . . . . she's also the one that went ape-sh!t over the woman who had the birthday cake at her rehearsal dinner.

My cousin is getting married on my dad's birthday, and I keep thinking of having a cake and imagining this scene unfolding . . .
  • Yeah, she was the one who was marrying this guy for the second time too.  It amazes me that he was that stupid not once, but twice.

  • The one who wanted to ride in on a horse and when she couldn't find one she asked the stable owner if he'd pretend to be the horse (this is the one taking $$ from her ex I think), and bought a tiny pistol to pack in her gown if the ex BF showed up - that one was from the town I lived in when I went to High School.

    Man, I was proud.Undecided

When J found out they got money, he offered to send me in to the show, even though I'd been the exact opposite. His response: fake it, for the money! Hell, I'll be a groomzilla! Yyeeeaahhh. The guy who has camera lockjaw.

  • while they do get paid, some are truly like that. the chick from staten island that was marrying the cop? yea she really is a bitch and truly acts like that in real life according to a friend of mine that knows her husband and has met her a few times. apparently no one really likes her and her friends are only her friends because she has money. or at least her parents do. so at least with her, it wasn't an act.
  • I watched that show before I was on the knot. I was appalled that anyone would/could act like that to another person. Then I joined these boards... sigh, life lessons.
