Two fashion questions, please and thank you.

I have this sweater dress, except it's solid purple, so it's normal looking. It fall almost to my knees. I want to wear it to the party I'm hosting tomorrow night. I was thinking I'd wear it with tall black boots (3 inch heels). Is that okay? Or should I wear it with leggings and ankle boots/shoes?

Second, I just ordered this sweater. It's super cute, but it's big. It falls between my hips and my knees, for real. Covers my butt. I looked online and they do not have the smaller size anymore (only sizes I couldn't possibly fit into). I can exchange it in store, but I'm not sure if they have it in store, either. Should I try to exchange it? Or just keep it and wear it with leggings and ankle boots?

It's super cute and it was BOGO, so I don't think I'd get money for returning it, even, since it was technically free.

  • I have a sweater dress.. I wear mine with tights and knee high boots.. but they also look cute with tights and ankle boots.

  • I dont think you need leggings with the first one, I love sweater dresses with boots

The second one would be fine with leggings, very winter-y
  • 1. Can you do boots with black tights? In my mind that will look better than purple dress, skin color leg, black boots.

    2. I'd keep it and do what you're saying.
  • I vote leggins and shoes on the first one.

As for the large sweater, I would try to exchange it. If they don't have a smaller size then I would keep it and either try to shrink it or use it as an around the house sweater. I bought a sweater online from Old Navy and it was MASSIVE when it came. I use it as an extra sweater in the office now.
  • 1. I agree with emily - black tights & boots would look great

    2. I think your idea sounds good, you could even wear it in the fall that way too :)

  • 1. Depends on where the boots hit. I like dresses with boots if the dress covers the top of the boot OR there are a few inches between dress and boot. But when there's only an inch or so between dress and boot, I think it looks silly.

    2. Is it actually too big or just long? Sounds like it would be cute with leggings, but I'd try it first, if you haven't already, just to be sure it works.
  • I think because you're going to be in your house (?) that you might actually get hot wearing boots. I know I do when I'm inside. So, I'd do some fun tights, with some shoes or little ankle boots.

See, that's what I'm wondering. All black? Or purple, skin, black? That's why I need opinions! Thanks. I'll probably test both out. I mean, I'm just saying it won't be up to my hoo-ha when I sit or anything, but if the black-black looks better, I'll do that.

Birdie, this one's from Old Navy too! I know I've lost weight, so maybe I'm not the size I used to be, but it's almost as long as the damn sweater dress. I wanted to wear it to work today (it came yesterday) and when I put it on this morning I was like... "I can't justify wearing this over jeans." Honestly, in my house, Oliver is likely to shrink it for me at some time or another anyway. I was thinking of using it for casual weekends, like watching football at friends' houses.

    1. Oh, I agree. These boots are like 3/4 calf boots, I guess. So they hit about 2 inches below the knee and the dress is probably 2 inches above.

    2. I think it's too big overall. That's kind of my fear - that maybe a size smaller will be too tight anyway. I really just tried it on for a hot second this morning. I just got it yesterday and there's a 45 day return policy.

You know, that's a good point. Plus, if I have one too many drinks, I'm going to feel less inhibited and walk to take them off - then I'll be running around in socks. (Cause I mentioned they have 3 inch heels, yes?) I'd like to say this hasn't happened before.

  • I just bought a sweater dress a few weeks ago and wore it last Friday night with leggings and almost knee high black boots with a 2 inch heel. I got all sorts of compliments at our Christmas party.

As for the sweater, it is very cute. I think the same thing, wear it with either leggings or tights and probably either height of boot would be okay.
  • I think the first would look great with black tights and boots. And I know I always feel better when I have tights on under sweater dresses, it helps to smooth everything out.

I think I might just keep the big sweater to wear with tights. That is one of my go to outfits for studying/running errands etc. It is about the closest I usually come to wearing pants.
  • Yeah I usually am in the XL range, but this was just massively too big. The arms and shoulders and everything were just way too frumpy. I was bummed at first, but ended up liking it as an office sweater since they keep it like a meat locker here during the winter.

I like PP's suggestions for how to work with it.
  • I'd try the black tights, but I also like the idea of purple tights or fishnet or something with some texture or pattern and interest since the dress is a solid block of color and the boots would be another solid block.

And I'd keep the sweater and wear it with leggings or skinny jeans. I actually like my sweaters big with leggings.
  • I have some green/blue/purple plaid tights that are really cute. Hmm...

  • I bought that sweater in grey for my SIL! My brother recommended grey or aqua, and her size wasn't available in the aqua.

I hope it isn't too big on her, but I bought the size he said....

The extra one I got was a light pink cotton one with a hood. I loves it.

    The hooded sweaters are cute!

I'm sure it's fine. I'm just sort of between sizes and I'm adjusting to that.
